Official 4G/WiMax: what is it, why do we want it

Ok, I was done until that.

It is clear from that statement you do not even know what spectrum Wifi operates at.

It is also clear that you have no idea what is require for licensed spectrum.

Wifi is 2.4 ghz. Very Very high power.

Wimax is 2.5ghz.

Wait...you said...oh.

Bottom line, regardless of specs and ideas. Installing and using wimax is very, very, very, close to installing and using wifi.

This is what I was saying. They both face the same issues for installing and using.

Both of them are made to provide wireless broadband connection. Not a mobile data connection.

Which makes wimax more silimar to wifi then 3g. Of course you know best.

You problems with your connection is like using starbuck free wifi and stating that is how all wifi is.

I am not a fan of clear, never well be.

But you fall into the fallacy that if you connection says 100mbps, and you get 10mbps. IT HAS TO BE THE CARD/SERVICE. Not the host server. Not the traffic.

You speak on things you can not even begin to understand.

Ethernet guy! They are all Broadband Wireless Access standards, so they are not the same product, but are very close family members. Wimax offers the same type of connection that wifi does, but over miles and not feet.

I am sorry but I am done with this thread. If you guys want your "info" get it from licensed spectrum (700mhz-1.4ghz) guy. lol

I'm really sorry to see you leave River. :( Thanks for your posts and hope to see you at a Sprint store on Evo day!:)

So, I looked up reviews on Clear/Clearwire, and had a REALLY hard time finding good ones. Anyone else concerned?

Nah, I've been using them as my main ISP for the past year and I tested the rollout here in Baltimore. I know what I am getting into. I think a lot of the issues people have are due to the inherent variability in wireless signals. People used to dedicated wired connections like DSL or cable shared out over a local network may get annoyed when they get different speeds around the house or the neighborhood.

In this case, it will be a lot better because if you hit a block with weaker coverage, you won't just lose your network connection but rather fall back on 3G. Hopefully they get the handoff between the two worked out well. That is honestly my main issue and concern with this phone. When I tested Wimax here in Fall/Winter 2008, the laptop I was given had a Wimax radio and a Wifi radio. You could not use both at once and you could not seamlessly switch between them. You had to bring up some Intel ProSet software and turn one on and one off and it was very annoying.

I sincerely hope that this is more like a 1x/Ev thing where you automatically end up on the fastest available network. Having to turn on Wimax to use it and turn it off if signal gets weak will piss me off like nothing else :D

In the demo video I saw, that's exactly how they did it. An icon turned on/off 4G. :(

Well, hopefully I don't get pissed off....because you know what happens when I get pissed off....

^ lol wasn't expecting that.

Ok on to the serious side of things.

As noted in the main HTC 4G Wimax thread in my post here, let me repeat a few points in this thread just in case.

I extracted all technical WiMax posts from the other thread and moved them in here. Any posts that could be in both threads were just simply copied over. I renamed all three Stickied threads to more closely explain what should go in them.

From this point forward, please place any technical WiMax threads in here. This is not to say that Wimax posts can not go in the other thread, but at least not the highly skilled technical ones. Its preferable to keep them in one place, here.

If you get into heated discussions (which will happen) in such technical threads trying to point our your view of the facts, just chill out or take it to pms. If it still gets out of hand, report the post.

Thanks

wimax IS wifi.

Wifi if 802.11ng
Wimax 802.16m

Both are ieee compliant.

Why buses? It has to do with the complete and close coverage. Because it is about 300 bucks for a cpe. Which is really cheap. It would blanket the area with more towers and wimax is really good at monitoring bus times and traffic conditions.

.

If you think this post is long you should have seen the other one I started before forum crashed. I decided it was way to tech.

So many diff. directions one can go with this topic....

Thanks for the reply : )

If you consider buses move around town and back to a terminal. This would make for a poor network grid design. Fixed towers offering a calculated overlap would make for a better design regardless of price.

Now if you want to offer WiMax / Wifi in a bus or taxi, that's great. Sorry, if I wasn't typing what I was thinking before.

If you break down the tech. aspects of WiMax vs WiFi and not the range they transmit on, I believe there are significant diff. enough that most can see they are not the same. But if your just throwing out a general example to somebody who doesn't know what WiMax is and barely knows what WiFi is other than the name. Sure, I understand why someone would make that statement. I think we agree, most just want something better then they have now.

Remember todays rules for this tech. will not be the same 2-3 yrs. from now. They have already said WiMax 2 was much easier to figure out. I used to be in the satellite field and by the time you invest in today's newest tech it was being replaced. Guess who was stuck with the outdated tech. as the world moved on in a diff. direction ?

This gets very expensive. If it was easy we wouldn't have had to wait for many co. to merge.

I remember back in the mid 80's a satellite co. using pagers that could work any place in the U.S. which was great but they cost too much and most people do not travel all over the U.S. so the cheaper city pager worked fine at $15 mo. vs $65 and they stopped offering device. That same company is now looking at WiMax coverage devices. Funny it has taken 25+ yrs. for tech. to reach an affordable point. And Sat. TV is cheaper now than that pager was. Consider almost all commercial vehicles use sat. tracking and some have data connections. Will they switch to WiMax / LTE if cheaper ?

It takes time to develope / deploy tech. like WiMax and just like all new tech it will depend on customers backing it. How about offering coverage for almost everything using sat. now. Not everyone needs coverage all over the U.S. and will be very happy with their home area for much less money. Who cares if VZ offers better total U.S. coverage if you spend your life in one area. I was talking to a person yesterday who switched to VZ 3 yr. ago because he traveled all over the U.S. and sprint was lacking coverage. He now works local with no plans to change his current job. I asked why he still pays more money for VZ after he told me about his VZ bill, (he looked at me like a light just went on ) I never thought about it until they just raised my bill again. Another person speaks up and says hey man VZ is the best. Sheep, but this is what sprint needs. People to switch and stick but those who will come for the new tech will jump ship if the wind blows the other direction.

I'm just excited all this tech has finally come together with a plan or will be soon for the end user. Been in the works for many years and nobody can seem to agree which is the best path. I have no misconceptions of the bugs which need to be worked out over the coming years and if I see Jesus during the process, it's just an added bonus

I will say unless batt. tech changes I don't care if they come out with a 2 Ghz phone. The EVO can do anything I require from a cell phone for many years.

Why I'm hyped about WiMax and if I feel this way consider how many do live in the woods with dial up. Verizon doesn't offer DSL over 1.5 Mbps at my house. Yes that is correct and used to be 1/2 that till last year. That's what I had since cable was the only other option and I didn't want to pay their 3 X broadband prices. Verizon still has no plans to run new lines so I now have 20+ Mbps cable broadband and pay 3 times more for it because it's the only option for a faster connection. With WiMax, this won't be a problem 5 yrs. from now and prices will reflect that as well.

That's an example of why many people will be happy to see WiMax in their area. Do you think most will care if they get 3 Mbps or 10 if they only had 1 Mbps before ? But then take it to the next level. You will have coverage for portable devices when your away from home under the same plan. Might be WiMax or LTE and as a end user with a combo chip, why would you care. It will most likely be the same as Sprint using VZ roaming towers now except they will use VZ LTE when out of a WiMax area.

Until 2012 when your 2 yr. contract is up you won't have anything better to choose from, so enjoy the EVO on 3g / 4g.

still reading. Good thing forum has max text limit if you think this is long:D.

I tried watching that at work and it was almost impossible, but at home it went smoothly. You can see it here but instead opens up at YouTube.

Pretty cool seeing the WiMax units.

Yeah, so weird. It's worked on and off at work for me. CNN put some sort of weird restriction on it.

hey do any of you wimax guys have an lte coverage map. because over in the ppc geeks forums theres a debait going on about why he thinks lte will rule and well u know my position

I don't think LTE has bee formally launched, at least by any of the major cell carriers. So their coverage map would be a blank outline of the country :D

I'd say that WiMax's head start, and the industry backers make it a pretty solid offering.

Not really, I read a statistic that 80% of the world uses LTE vs the 20% that uses wimax

this is what the guy said over at ppc geeks. i think he was confusing standard gsm with cdma. not lte to wimax considering that like 10 markets have lte vs over 300 with wimax

I agree. There's one person here that works in the field and he's made a few posts that make me think Verizon will never catch up with Sprint on 4G. For one, they haven't even started to deploy LTE yet. Secondly, Verizon is the largest backer of LTE in this country and they're up against Sprint who has a huge head start and they're backed by Comcast, Time Warner, Bright House Networks, Intel and Google.

Look for posts made by RiverOfIce in this thread and then tell me who has the best chance of coming out on top. Here's two of his posts:

o yea i know lol ive read every post on this forum about wimax and i also googled for lte coverage maps and they are non existant. so far the only places that have them are tmo test beds for lte.
