Official 4G/WiMax: what is it, why do we want it

his argument was that over 1000 threads bashing sprint over backin wimax instead of lte. i dont know where he saw those 1000+ threads at but im sure the same is true with verizon supporting lte.

It's not just about speed with WiMAX, it's bandwidth too. The EVO will be able to support up to 8 WiFi devices tethered to it. LTE would never be able to do that. WiMAX is here to stay and I have doubts that LTE will be able to compete against it, because Sprint has such a huge heard start. My guess is Sprint will be getting a lot of their customers back when the EVO is released.

I agree, once the EVO comes out and starts showcasing its stuff, people will be coming back to sprint. 4G, best plans, fastest and best phone, and with possible 2.5 froyo, sprint has a dynamite combination that will blow others out of the water.

don't forget that wimax2 will punk LTE like a red-headed stepchild and is just a couple years away, potentially

Sprint has yet to officially jump on the Wimax 2 bandwagon.

writing is on the wall. clearwire has said they have 'considered' experimenting with W2 in 2011 for a 2012 rollout. W2 standards are expected to be approved this year. Upgrading from W1 to W2 is simple just like rolling out W1 to existing tower locations. With 70+ mps DL, W2 blows LTE's paltry 6-10 out of the water.

@SprintFun

Adriana made some good comments, but she's not on board with the EVO 4G or WiMAX. She down-played both. Here's one of the comments that followed her article:

Funny. It's interesting to see the difference when Adriana or Noah talk about Apple products compared to other products like HTC's EVO. When it comes to the EVO she's like, "Oh, you know, that HTC EVO thing". But then it's the iPhone or iPad and she's like, "Oh yeah, this thing rocks, so fun and awesome". Oh well, I guess that's what you get with Apple enthusiasts.
I believe most media people use Macs and carry iPhones, so what do you expect.

i asked this question in the Evo thread, but after being pointed to this thread it seems more appropriate here.

I was asking about whether the EVO would be able to utilize Clear's 4G network. Because Sprint has 51% ownership of Clear I would have thought yes. But for my area, Sprint doesn't show 4G coverage as being available but Clear does. Not quite sure why the disparity.

One of our forum members who has been testing WiMAX said the other day "I think the up and coming cities for 4g roll out is grossly understated. Sprint is down playing its wimax roll out. But that is a good thing to under promise and over deliver."

You might look at the official speed test thread, as most of his comments and speed tests are together in that thread. Also, SoFLO has been keeping up with coverage areas in the official 4G/WiMAX coverage thead. I believe there's links to TowerCo where you can locate WiMAX towers in your area. It might help if we knew where you're from...

Its true that they don't line up exactly. Dayton, OH is an example of exactly that - Clear coverage but no 4G coverage. I would say just to be patient because I would think you'd have 4G "soonish" lol.

It's the same network really. I originally got it as Xohm, then it changed names to Clear. Sprint offers 4G Overdrive hotspot devices here in Baltimore as well because it can connect to that same network. I am pretty sure that outside of a packaging and marketing sense, they are the same network.

Has anybody dared to venture to the Incredible forum? I don't think I've ever seen so much whining in my life. Most of the people are complaining about FedEx being slow to deliver the phone ahead of its real release date. Holy smokes.

Some things never change... :D

IDC Study: WiMax Is Not The Future, LTE Rising

Does this actually have valid claims or is it more likely we see a merger of both LTE and WiMax rather than one taking over?

It is a bit like Blu-Ray and HD-DVD at this point. WiMAX is already out in Europe and doing well, but LTE is going to storm in next year. I don't think Sprint going with WiMAX was a bad idea, but LTE will be the more widely adopted standard. WiMAX from what I understand, can be converted into LTE with a few changes. But with Sprint as the only WiMAX user in the US, that leaves all the bandwidth to us! :D

Wimax is less expensive to roll out than LTE so the gross dollar amount is a useless comparison.

Wimax is alive and being used now in several countries. LTE has I think 2 networks.

The article is lame at best.. Wimax will be around for years the roll out and uses are more practical than LTE

Answers like these are why I really am starting to like this forum A LOT. Very informative responses. And I appreciate it because I'm completely ignorant to WiMAX/LTE and 4G. Only started to read about it when I got the email about the EVO.

Wimax is also suppose to be much better at bandwidth usage..

The only problem is the numbers for LTE and Wimax 2 they are theoretical and no phone device will support those speeds so the numbers are moot..

Wimax will run at the speed that phones are capable of for several years
