Root Unlocked Sprint HTC EVO 4g flashed to Cricket

First of all I'd like to say I am very new to the technical side of cell phones but know my way around a computer and I follow directions very well if explained "for dummies." I am scared to move on to the next step of fully rooting my phone without additional help from someone who has the experience. With that being said I have read the other threads but can't seem to find the answer to this question:

I have a Sprint HTC EVO 4g that I have unlocked using htcdev and my HBOOT is at 2.18.0001. I then performed a nandroid backup. After that I went and had the phone flashed for Cricket and setup an activated account through Cricket for service. My question is if I want to have wifi tether and other stuff on my phone where do I go from here. Does flashing the phone and having current service put my phone in jeopardy when doing these updated roms after doing a nandroid backup? Do I need my HBOOT at a different version? Does my S-ON need to be S-OFF? Do I need to get rid of my watermark or is it just preference? Lot of questions I know, but I could really use a "best friend" on this. If anybody has the time and is willing to help, it would greatly be appreciated. Thank you.

Hello smiley!
Welcome:D
After my reply here, I think I will move your thread into the root forum so others can check out whats up:)

Anyways, is your phone functional now on Cricket?
I don't see why you cannot flash a custom rom now to utilize the hacked wifi hotspot.
Your hboot version and the fact you are s-on is just fine...no need to change that:D

You can leave your watermark alone also.

Let me move this a minute, unless work tugs me away from the computer :p

Yes my phone is functional now on Cricket. Just wanna do all the "good stuff" like get rid of the Sprint bloatware and partition my sdcard get cool themes and wifi tether. I'm sure there is alot of other things I can do that I am not aware of also. Like other software to run, I remember something like icecream something. I don't know. Just wanna do all i can to my evo to make it faster and open all possibilities this phone is said to have.

Well, I think the best place to get started is here in post # 2:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html
a very well written guide for life after rooting and should answer alot of your questions:)

If there is something there that you are not clear about, or need more info about, just ask us and we can help :D

Alright I'm sure I will. I almost feel as if the anxiety is so greatly profound I'm reaching for a hand to lead me. Oh the horror!!:eek::eek:

the only thing that i have seen is that you may have issues with mms and a possibility with mobile data(3g) on certain roms. i not 100% sure on this with the latest roms and such. just make sure that you make a nandroid backup before flashing any roms.

i know of only one custom rom made especially for cricket users. it was called [ROM][12.23.10] Jiminy V (for Cricket) - 100% EVO 3.70.651.1 **OBSOLETE** which is a froyo based rom so i'm not sure if you want to go back to that or not.

Thanks OCNBRZE I'm not sure yet what I'm even needing. I know I'm looking for something super stable to work with Cricket so I don't crash. I'm not even sure if it matters what carrier I have for the Rom's that are being flashed to my phone. I'm still "in the dark" on all of this.

ok like i said i'm not too familiar with cricket, but i know in the past some of the roms did not work with cricket as you can't get mms to work. so thus jiminey was created for that solution. now the dev has long since moved on so i'm not sure what else is out there that will work.

you have said you made a nandroid backup, so i would just try a rom and see. start out with mikg3.11. you can get it here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/618281-list-utilities-apps-roms-kernels-og-evo.html. or you can try the staff picks. there some great suggestions there as well.

Okay I am S-ON after unlocking 2.18 HBOOT with HTCDev.com with watermark there. Okay here is the stupid question. Am I fully rooted, partially or not at all? I think I'm just unlocked but I'm not sure. I have unzipped Superuser3.0.7. and can see the Superuser icon (nothing in it) on my phone's app list. Now do I open cmd prompt to flash roms in adb shell like MikG? I know I'm stuck. I don't remember using unrevoked3 or revolutionary for anything on my device. I'm frustrated. I thought with these walk throughs I'd get it since I was able to build my own computer. It has proven me quite wrong.

With s-on, unlocked you are able to flash roms and kernels. And for most folks, that is sufficient. yes you are rooted.
As far as Superuser.zip, that is supposed to be flashed in recovery, not unzipped.

The link I provided you earlier will have the info for how to flash roms, how to make a nandroid backup etc. (See the post 2 in that link) :)
What guide did you follow when you rooted?

I followed this guide on youtube by MrTekn010933

[UNLOCK][ROOT]HTC Evo 4G Sprint Android2.3.5/OS 5.07.651.1/HBoot2.18/Partial and FULL ROOT! - YouTube

I'm sorry I did do the superuser.zip in recovery.

okee-dokee:)
I would suggest as Ocn suggests, and try MikG3.11. rom.
Just be sure to create a nandroid backup first just in case.

I am also not too familiar with flashed phones and as Ocn said, sometimes roms can cause some issues with mms and such.

one more question. If i already performed a nandroid backup in recovery when i went through the rooting process, i have to perform another before i flash a rom? Also if I did a nandroid backup, wouldn't it show in my sdcard? I go to manage apps and choose "on SD card" it says "No applications."

If you changed alot of stuff from the time your first nandroid was made to now, before your rom flash, then I would make another one.
Just be aware that nandroids can take up alot of space. So keep at least 1, perhaps 2 on your sd card (depending on the size of the sd card) and one or 2 on your computer.

What recovery do you have?

nandroid backup are like save points in a game. if you messed up or something goes wrong you can always go back to it. so like with any game the more often you save the better off you are.

and yes nandroid backups will be on your cad. with amon ra it should be in the nandroid folder. it will not be an app. it is in the form of a zipped file on your sd card. you can see it using a file manager like es or astro.

Okay I uploaded some pics of my sdcard in a reader hooked up to my pc to look because i cant figure out how to see the contents while the sdcard is mounted in phone. In the first pic is the contents of the nandroid folder that is located on the sdcard. In the second pic it shows all the contents of the sdcard. Are we not supposed to see the contents while the sdcard is mounted in our phone? Does everything in the sdcard belong there?

Hey OCNBRZE, I was just noticing that the folder (nandroid) located in my sdcard is not a zipped file. Is this a concern? See post above.

you need to look at in the nandroid folder.

so this is how the nandroid folder is setup. inside the nandroid folder is another folder named something like HT0CVHL01139. and inside that is your nandroid backup called BDES-20120323-0530. to be honest i forget if it is zipped or not.
