Link to GC01 repack

we too have a one stop shop that self created, maintains and updates. this is so things are organized, easy to find and one does not have to go searching. im sure such an important kernal will be there

I would rather start with stock everything, than to flash anything custom that I'm not going to use anyway. Codegerm implied the stock rom that I had linked has a critical deficiency in that it doesn't have a working recovery, but that isn't true. He is a custom rom fanatic whereas I appear to be quite the opposite. I have edited the original post to clearly indicate that the rom I linked is stock, very stock, and don't expect it to be anything but stock because it's stock and stock is what it is.

I am not a custom ROM fanatic. I tend to like the stock JB. A custom recovery is not a custom ROM. The stock recovery doesn't allow you to make backups and that is why i like the repack kernel. I have been running stock JB from FK23 on up. Unfortunately unlike the Prevail, the recovery is tied to the kernel so we have to use a kernel packaged with recovery. The Prevail had it as a stand alone thing so you could change kernels and not loose recovery.

Ah thanks a bunch Codegerm. I was under the impression that the recovery was its own distinct rom like with the transform ultra I rooted for a friend with CWM recovery and a rootzip. I see now that the recovery is built into the kernel. Does that mean that if you screw up your kernel from inside the android os (is that even possible?), that instead of booting to recovery you have to boot into the downloader and flash a fresh kernel with odin?

I don't really have an understanding of what all recovery does and how custom recovery enhances this function. Backups are great but I've never made any - could I use custom recovery backup to preserve my Opera Mobile bookmarks when performing a system reset? I tried to do that recently but it didn't work.

It is possible to screw up your recovery by flashing a kernel without one that is not compatible with the ROM you have. For example, if you have a JB ROM and flash an ICS kernel that doesn't have a custom recovery, you would brick the phone. At that point you need a pc and Odin with the phone in download mode to get out of it.

I won't say it is impossible to screw up the phone bad enough (in normal operation) to prevent you from getting into recovery to fix, but you would have to realy work at it. However it is quite possible to screw up your phone enough so it won't boot up into normal operation mode, and that is why I do like having a cwm type recovery to recover without the pc.

Yes making a nandroid backup even covers apps you have downloaded. It is best to make it when you have the phone setup and running good, and before making any changes like trying out a different ROM.

Always do keep a copy of the kernel/recovery you made your backup with, you have to use that recovery to restore the backup you made, if you changed kernels from flashing a ROM (I keep both the tar and zip on my sd card)

I have seen problems with the GC01 Repack with AGATs, problems at least with Nandroid creation/reinstallation.

Has anyone gotten useful Nandroids?

Haven't tried with GC01, but I do know they are having issues with anything higher than 0.1.0. Long operations like doing a backup in recovery cause a kernel panic. Also, as I understand it none of the recoveries backup /preload so keep a copy of the ROM in case you mess that up, and do not do a data wipe on anything but the stock kernel (causes boot loops) They are working on the problems in the GB27 one and once the problems are solved I am sure new versions will be out for the Boost and Virgin ones.
