Will rooting help?

Hi all.. new here... have some rooting questions. I have 4.0.4.. and as so many people had problems with, my phone would randomly shut off and suck the ever loving life out of my battery when it would restart! It's also slowed down a lot over the last year I've had it, and I really need to do something about it. I've read over rooting my phone, but I'm terrified of it, and if I brick the thing I'll scream like a girl (thankfully I am one!) Does someone have a good link about HOW to root the phone (hopefully successfully)? And, any suggestions what to use? I have no clue what to do or where to begin. I need an Idiot or Dummies guide for this... be patient and kind... I'm great with computers, but rooting my phone baffles me! Give this poor girl a hand, would ya?

When AT&T came out with ICS, I began to have issues in my i777. I decided to root to see if the issues would disappear; and they did. Somewhere in this forum, there are answers to most, if not all, your questions about rooting (here is one http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-t-all-things-root/668802-few-questions-before-rooting.html). My issues were battery life and sound, now solved (I'm on CM9, thinking of flashing ShoStock3 sometime this month).
Bricking your phone is close to impossible. You would have to try REALLY hard. My recommendation: 1) ALWAYS make sure you are installing the correct kernel for YOUR phone model. 2) ALWAYS make sure the kernel is compatible with the ROM you want to flash.

Cheers and happy rooting!

I've read in a couple places in the forum that rooting voids your warranty, then I've read that it doesn't. Which is it?

Rooting voids warranty indeed, but unrooting is untraceable (so warranty stays). As long as you don't mention it to them (screen shots, for example, should be deleted before taking the phone in)
