Is it okay to leave tablet on All night?

sfbloodbrother

I have been looking for a new alarm clock, one that is smart and will wake me up when I am not in a deep sleep at all. I looked on Google play and found some apps that do just this. But most, if not all of them require me to start the app, and leave the tablet on all night. With the screen on, but dimmed to a low point. (Which I can use another app for)

I was just wondering if there are drawbacks that can happen if I leave the screen on, overnight, about 8 hours a night, 5 days a week. That's a lot of time being on.

Tablet - Nexus 7.

SMART ALARM CLOCK!!
The stock alarm clock is a set time and is not a smart alarm clock. There's nothing to a regular alarm clock but a timer. We are in a day and age where we know things. A smart alarm is not a regular alarm clock, its a clock that regulates you're sleep cycle knows when you are in you're lighted sleep, and when you are in a depp REM. Many times the basic alarm will wake me up when I'm on the REM cycle, which can kill a dream you are having, or make you wake up much more tired than what a smart alarm will. A smart alarm is able to track your pattern's and wake you up when you are lightly sleeping. That's when it will go off, making you wake up much more energized, less tired! By tracking your movements, sounds and time slept the alarm will wake me up between 6:30 and 7:00. Rather than a stock alarm waking me up at 7:00. Between those times, it will know the right time to wake me up, to be ready for the day.

I would say that you run the risk of burning out your screen faster, since you have to leave it on everyday. (Even at its lowest setting.) If you have a smartphone, use that for your alarm clock instead. If not, find an alarm app that doesn't need the screen to be on at all, in order to function. You might want to check your stock apps and see if it has one first.

I dont think any android app can work with the device switched off tbh (like the alarm clock on old dumbphones) youll do negligable harm to your tablet's battery by keepin it booted with charger plugged in so honestly dont even think/worry bout it. As for screen burn-in.... turn the screen off :)

I'll keep searching for an app that's a smart alarm. I don't want to leave my screen on all night.

I would agree with him...

If all you want is an alarm clock (and not an actual running clock), why not just use the stock alarm clock function? Set it, choose the alarm sound, put your tab to sleep and that's that. :-)

Yes you can turn it off you are not running an alarm or some other task this will obviously save power but otherwise it is ok to keep it on
One thing that will save you battery is to turn the airplane mode on when you're not using it. You can switch off the wifi as well to save power

Older laptop screens the backlight would wear after a while, I've replaced the bulbs in a few, but newer laptops and phones and tablets are use LED backlights so there is minimal wear. They won't last forever but even slightly over driver LEDs last for decades.

Using my phone as an alarm I have it set to 'silent' and turn on airplane mode (which also shuts off wifi BTW ...). However, it's a pain to use the phone like this, not the settings, but carrying it about and in/out of the bedroom etc so I'm just going to get a proper alarm clock that can sit by the bed all the time.

i'm confused as to why the stock alarm won't do what's you're asking? turning the screen off is not the same as shutting a tablet down.

i feel like i'm missing an important detail here.

These alarms are very hard to find on the play store, and are very poorly made for the ones I found so far. They REQUIRE me to leave the tablet on over night screen on and everything so it can track movement, sounds, and time slept. Since there is not a good app yet in the play store yet for an alarm like this, an advanced alarm, I had to turn to my iPhone (Which I am not a iOS fan - hence I looked in the play store first!) I found much more quality apps for an alarm this advanced. Today the alarm woke me up at 6:45 I woke up well rested, rather than grouchy, and tired.

I'm confused. Why is any app requiring that the screen be on? You want to use your tablet as a clock so you can see the time all night long?

The LED in my 10month old gs3 are wearing out already lol. You can see it on a full white screen, where the statusbar would be is brighter because the LED there have had less use

Have you checked your stock alarm clock? Not sure if its a Samsung thing since all my devices are Samsung, but under the alarm options there's a "smart alarm" toggle

,

I think Gentle Alarm can hit your target requirements.
