Procrastination

Okay, I have a little problem. How do you deal with procrastination? I should be working on school assignments, right now, but I feel that since there is no school for more than a week, that I will do it later. When in reality, I will wait to the last minute.

I want to be a better student, to get work done as fast, and efficient as possible, but sometimes find it hard, because I keep putting it off for a later time, until it's at the last minute. How do some of you deal with this? Any tips, suggestions?

The trick is to find out why you keep putting it off. Is it because you dislike schoolwork? Is it because you dislike the subject of study? Finding out why you put things off is the first step to avoiding that practice. Perhaps try to make a game out of the work that you keep putting off, or find a way to make the work enjoyable. This helped me quite a bit when I was in college.

Truthfully, I've always been very book smart. Like you, I am a huuuuuuge procrastinator. I wait until maybe the day before the project/assignment is due before I complete it. Sometimes I might even wait until the day of. Either way, it gets done and I always get an exceptional grade. However, I might relate some of that to my genetics since both of my parents were good students once upon a time as well.

I thought that I might add that I can't accomplish anything without some kind of noise going on. I guess you can say that I find peace in a noisy environment.

Back on topic: You have to figure out for yourself why it is that you wait so long to complete tasks. If you can answer that successfully, you may be able to break out of your funk or at least work towards some kind of goal.

I'll tell you next week :p

My problem is that I need some sense of urgency - if something can be put off it will be put off. One thing you can try is imposing artificial deadlines and try to force yourself to take them seriously. Can sometimes work for me.

giving birth is easier than when planned; all things are difficult before they seem easy; the paralysis of analysis
(lit.: bringing something forth is easier than planning it; i.e.: doing something often turns out to be easier than it seemed beforehand)

same for me....I do my best work under total pressure and mayhem!! otherwise..I will tend to over think stuff...at least that's what I tell myself:p

actually though...people DO work best ..under different circumstances..it's best to accept it and choose a career that is compatible...for instance if you work best under pressure quick decisions etc... ER Doctor or trauma nurse etc...if you like to plan things etc...maybe a project manager engineer etc...

go with your strengths

Good questions and great thread idea, imo sfbloodbrother.

Plenty of good opinions and strategies offered. I'll offer my Dad's, which was: "If it needs to be done by you, and you're not doing it, you're not living your life, you're just alive, but you're not living."

That difference, "living your life" vs "being alive" always got me going right away on things I needed to do. What a waste of time, to just put off the things we know we need to do. We're only here for a short, finite amount of time.

Also, we don't want our regret pile to build up where our accomplishment pile is meant to be. ;)

I work best when I am sleep deprived. I am able to not care about many things such as video games, and I just get work done. But I can't always be that way.
