Well, some shifting will be going on. New note 8 for my mom, her 8.9" going to sis, sisters HD 7 going to me. At least I can make use of my prime membership. Mom will get better use from the note 8, my sister gets a larger kindle since she is a huge reader.

Can you send a S4 my way ? I'm on love with the camera!

Battery life on the S4 is supposed to be great. I thought the excuse for non removable batteries was so they would have room to cram a bigger one in there. What up, HTC One? lol

If the only thing ifans can argue about about Samsung devices is plastic.

If I read / watch one more S4 review that complains about the plastic I think I'm gonna snap :p

K'lin : the camera on the S4 is pretty bad a$$, we may just see an S4 in your future after all.

Aj : hope your mom likes the Note 8.0 :thumb:

I heard the HTC one gets dual sim and microSD slot.... in china. Why not the US version?

Probably a few reasons, you decide if you like them, I'm just reporting, not defending.

The Chinese version won't have the premium case, nor any kind of 4G and as memory serves, will have less storage (offset by the sd card somewhat), so one, it's cheaper and two, dual sim. If you move about much in Asia, dual sim is a huge feature.

Second, phones here go by majority through the carriers. They've been lobbying successfully for carrier locks and dual-sim equals unlocked.

Is there a market here for the dual sim model?

Sure, we are a market for everything.

Big enough market to pay for an English version, including support and documentation, and FCC compliance, and distribution through non-carrier sales channels that only works on some GSM frequencies?

They don't think so.

I would quote Early, but that is way over my Android For Dummies head...lol

Does anyone know what the best course of action is for my son. He is going to Japan in a few weeks. He incorrectly thought of he got an international plan he could call home .... like free. NOT , should he wait to get a phone there? Then do I get a international plan to talk to him? Can he get a dual thingy? He is asking and I have to go to the all knowing water hole for dummies lmao.

Oh, he has an iphoney right now. 4S I believe.

ALL THE REAL NERDS OF THE HOLE, PLEASE STAND UP NOW!

I'm on VZW like you kymberlin, but I'm asking for help for your son from the smartest people I know here.

I'm awaiting the grand entrance of Early, X or Aj , since I'm sure they know the answer. I am quite comfortable in my nice little hole.... I know I should venture out, but......

Ouch, it's painful

Heya pup!

I've asked anyone I know that may be able to help though I'm sure EM knows much more than me.;) I've been on VZW (NyNEX, BellAtlantic) for 20+ years, so I'm clueless about international stuff.

As far as me, not so good stuff at work has been keeping me quiet here. I'm reading along, just not posting so much. I jump in when something important comes up like a young soldier needing to keep in touch with Mom.:)

Ok ok ok.... I'm sure you are quite knowledgeable in international phone technology....

Hit it Treb!
Actually when I called Verizon 4 times before I went to Mexico, I got 4 different answers. There is / was / might be / could have been / an international plan, but I could never get a straight answer so I gave up. We ended up using Wifey Treb's iPhone on AT&T to make calls.

Yeah, I doubt US users need dual sim slots, it was not really the issue. The sim card slot, however is what I was calling things on :)

But once again, the US does get it choice of a whopping 64gb monster with an unlocked bootloader. Though people who buy the thing are paying a big premium for it.

K'lin, I suspect most of the world operates on GSM radios.

You said he has an iPhone? Which carrier? If its a carrier that supports GSM (most carriers) a sim card (from the country) should be all that is needed, provided the device supports that countries frequency. If its a CDMA (verizon / sprint / cricket) version, then you may have issues.

The iPhone may need to be unlocked (I am not sure on the bands and such on the older devices) and that would need to be done by the carrier.

Other courses of action may be, perhaps, skype?

I may have over shot my answer here, or perhaps answered the question wrong  :o

(stands and waves - I've spent a lot of time in Japan for work)

Is he on Verizon? He may get CDMA access there but it's going to cost through the nose to talk. (Japan / Sprint CDMA works (some), I'll double check for Verizon.)

Just for calling home?

He'll likely get wifi.

Both of you, get Skype accounts set up on a PC. Skype.com

Make each other buddies. Go into your account settings to only talk to buddies.

Both of you get the app on your phones, and sign in to your accounts to test.

Skype will let you make actual phone calls. They'll have you bank a credit card to do it.

You don't have to.

Using wifi and Skype to Skype with each others user names instead of phone numbers is 100% free.

If he's on Verizon, his cheapest bet is to get a Japanese phone to rent when he lands. Carry for emergencies. Get least expensive plan offered. If you want to set it up on your credit card, let me know, I'll check if you can.

To dial you from the emergency phone, instead of 1-555-555-5555, it's 001-555-555-5555.

Our country code is 001 or +1, Japan is 081 or +81.

For you to dial the emergency phone, you have to dial the outbound code, 011.

http://www.bionanome.com/J_phone.html

Call Verizon and let them know that you have a son in the military, you may be making and receiving international calls and you want any account restrictions lifted and a note on file.

That's free, and easy to do now, but a huge pain if you wait and in the middle of the night you call and get intercepted by accounts. Confirm that they honor 011 as the outbound prefix, note their number if I'm wrong.

But do the Skype thing and test while he's State-side.

The setup throws newcomers. They do that to get you to buy. It's not that difficult to set up, just - a little goofy.

If you want help with it, we can trade gmail info via PM, set some time or something, and I'll be glad to walk you through it. On your PC, logged in to gmail, we can chat real time until you're set up and you can test a free Skype to Skype call with me, pc to pc and phone to phone.

Nothing is too good or too much for those who serve and their families.

Plus if I get to say hi to the Pa, I win twice. :)

Ask anything you like here, in a private thread in our http://androidforums.com/private-chat-moderators/, private message or whatever works for you.
