Root USB Port damaged, unable to Flashboot....problems with Recovery

Hey All....idiot here with a problem. One of my kids damaged the USB port on my wifes Evo, so not only can it not charge (thank God for spare batteries and external chargers), but I mistakenly installed TWRP 2.5.0.0 over 4EXT and now I am unable to flash a ROM without getting the following error:

"error executing updater binary in zip"

Then it bombs and it goes to the previous screen. My next step is to look for a zip of the 4EXT recovery to see if that will flash.

The phone no longer boots after flashing TWRP and was trying to dirty flash Harmonia back but receive the above error.

Any ideas? Thanks

Hboot is 1.57 and am S-On.

I can load up another ROM on the SD card and try....I've tried 2 diff ROM's and both have failed with the above error message.

That is a bug in TWRP 2.5.0.0, it fails when it tries to wipe cache and dalvik from the updater script, try a rom that doesn't do that (or modify the roms updater-script to not wipe the caches)

Thanks, I'll keep trying diff ROM's till one catches since I do not know how to mod a ROM to prevent the updater script from wiping the caches.

If your rooted won't the 4ext app install 4ext recovery itself over twrp?

Surprisingly most Roms only format the System Partition and only a handful format Data

Download 4ext from my Dropbox:

Extract the recovery.img from that zip and flash through fastboot.

That'd require the OP's USB to be working...... In this case anyway the OP can get to a Rooted Rom Booting will half fix the problem. First thing to do is get a Rom booting then use the 4Ext app to re-install 4Ext. Not sure what can be done about USB though unless it related to TWRP being installed

Doh. I knew that earlier. But then I totally spaced it. Well crap...

Yeah, the broken pins in the USB port are what's killing me. Wife says that if I can't fix it, to just get her an iPhone.....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about the "Terminal Commands" feature from within TWRP....anyway to use that to flash the recovery.img?

If its still within its year of purchase you could try calling VM and tell them the USB Port broke and they might replace it under warranty

Hmmmm good point, the problem is that the pins are what's broken on the inside, and that's obvious user error and I don't have the protection plan on it.

Just act like an iPhone user and claim ignorance. And 1 year warranty is standard from the manufacturer in this case HTC, Virgin Mobile just handles the process

New phone is on its way. I guess I'll just temporarily activate the Blackberry until the new phone arrives. Thanks again for all of the help.

I know the new phone is on its way; However you could have just used a card reader and put 4ext on the card that way then boot into fastboot etc.

I was looking for a flashable zip of 4ext but couldn't find one. Would you be able to point me to one? If that works, I could use the phone in the meantime till the replacement comes in.

It doesn't work like that unfortunately. If you were s-off you could flash it through the bootloader without the need for a pc but you can't flash 4ext to your phone through recovery like you would a rom.

If you could boot up you could flash 4ext through the app but you can't boot up so you are kinda stuck :/

Ahh didn't catch OP wasn't S-off. Why not S-off?!? Takes only a couple min and then you can fix it easy. Having s-off is the key with HTC :-) That way you could just drop the recovery on the card then boot into the bootloader and it should auto install it.

As HaTrEd360 pointed out you could always revert back to stock then try again. This might help. http://androidforums.com/cdma-evo-3...mware-upgrade-ruu-flash-unbricking-guide.html

Why not just use the RUU? Or do you need to be S-Off for that to be done from the phone?

He actually can't lol... Being s-on, you have to lock the bootloader before running the Ruu. Without a usb port he has no fastboot commands.

Like above, without a usb port he cannot s-off :/
When you get your replacement op, you should s-off. It gives you more options to recover from sticky situations. Once s-off you really don't need the pc unless you like using it. I keep all my tools on my sd card and never use fastboot anymore.
