Help Standby Crash; Won't turn back on without a soft reset...

New Android user here, about a month ago I purchased the LG Optimus Elite as my first phone and noticed a strange issue not long after buying it...

Basically, the phone refuses to turn on, light or power up/down unless I preform a soft reset (take out the battery, then replace it). Early on it wasn't a very frequent issue but this week has been happening at least once or twice a day. I'm starting to worry more then wonder what the cause is.

As I stated before, the phone didn't do it often and when it did my general assumption was that I was running too many apps and widgets in the backround so I quickly removed them. Over time the problem reoccurred anyway and more and more frequently.

Yesterday it happened again and in frustration, I preformed a factory data reset (though the Menus), replaced only the apps I wanted most on the phone; (Facebook+Messenger, Steam, Skype, Pandora, TuneinRadio, Planetside 2 Map, Imgur, Instagram and Tumblr). This morning, it happened again, after all that work of restoring contacts, apps and everything.

My secondary assumption is that its the Sync and/or WiFi options; it seemed to also do it more often when I had AutoSync on and less when I had it off. If its not that, could it be the a corrupt system standby process? Faulty hardware that continues to degrade? Could it be the SD card (16GB)? A co-worker of mine suggested it was a bad ROM...

Overall my last question is, should (and could) I set it up for an RMA with Virgin Mobile or LG?

Hello there, Jjetty! Welcome aboard! :)

I do not know what the answer is to your problem but I would think that you would have a better chance of that rma if you call them asap.

I haven't had any dealings with them either, but experience suggests that the quicker you call them the more likely they are to agree it is the phone rather than something you did to it.

I would like to hear how this turns out too, please. :)

Good Luck with that!

Update: So after removing the Facebook app among a few other high profile and somewhat bloated apps, the phone went for five consecutive days without the problem re-occurring. During these five days I monitored the running apps and RAM for the phone all the while consulting a friend I work with (we do tech support and he specializes in phones) he believes its a RAM issue. I'm thinking the same thing along with a sync issue aswell as FB integrates contacts.

By the time the problem re-occured the phone had under 100MB of RAM left and whenever I used the Facebook Messenger app (a seperate app dedicated to Messenger) the phone's RAM would drop down to around 30, this enforces my friend's theory that its a RAM issue.

Since then I've installed a background task killer app, which appropriately kills apps and background tasks as the phone goes to sleep mode. So far its been behaving itself and if this continues I may re-install the Facebook apps.

Glad to see you are making progress there!

Not suggesting I am any sort of guru regarding these things but thinking about what you have said and what i have read in these forums, I have a theory.

I have read repeatedly that Android knows how to manage it's memory and that task killers are not needed and can even cause more problems. Putting that together with your comments that it might be a sync issue, I am wondering if it is a problem with FB trying to sync and not quite making it that is causing your trouble? Vs the ram it is using being the trouble.

That is just a thought. The task killer kills FB, it no longer tries to sync, the problem goes away. :)

I really get a kick out of hearing how people figure out the issues they are having, so thanks for posting your experience here.

Regardless of the validity of my theory, :) I am glad you seem to have something figured out that works! I am interested in hearing what you finally come up with! :D

I'm beginning to think its a Sync issue as-well, its been doing it with my Firefox app (which syncs bookmarks and the like) now and then and whenever it does that's when the problem pops up out of the blue like a hoard of creepers in minecraft while your constructing a well engineered castle. lol

Like I said some time ago, it happens most with the Facebook apps and any app that requires sync and does it when I turn on auto sync for a short period of time. The big problem is that it occurs intermittently for me even if I DON'T sync apps. I swear I'm about ready to either RMA the thing, or chuck it out my window lol

Virgin is normally very good with warranty replacements. Call and tell them the phone won't turn on sometimes and they will send you a new one, then you return the old one. So your not out a phone for a week.

To me it sounds like a defective phone/OS. Since this issue is not common for stock Elites and it is doing it after factory resets and turning syncing off.
