Root Thinking of rooting phone - recommendations?

I've had my T-Mobile/HTC G2 for ages, and it's still on Android 2.3. I'd like to root the phone and install another OS: perhaps Cyanogenmod, or some other Android variant. However, I've been told that this will slow down my data connection, and make calling less reliable. Is there any Android variant with which I can maintian 4G speed and good call reliability? Thanks.

one thing i like to add is that flashing roms should not have an affect on your radio signals at all. so you should have no issue with data or calls. the phone's performance as far as speed and battery life can be tweaked to some degree with roms, but mostly with custom kernels.

as far as a rom goes cyanogenmod (cm7 and now cm10) are an aosp rom which means that it is for the most part pure android. you have a htc phone and htc adds there own skin on top of the android os. they call it sense. aosp roms are thus smaller since there is no sense added.

edit: ok so i have been informed that the g2 does not have sense added so i was wrong there:o
 
Thanks, ocnbrze - good to know I should be able to mod my device without compromising the quality of data delivery or device performance. I'll look through the docs, and give it a shot!
