thanks, that cleared alot. Pretty much has to have the 1700,2100 band, and HSPA+... the sucky part, havent been able to find a reliable (legit) site that sales bootleg phones with those specs.

If your area has been refarmed then you could also go with 1900. This is how they got ATT iPhones HSPA instead of edge. A friend of mine has his 4S on TMo's $30 data plan. His speeds averages around 8mbs. It's slower than a regular TMo phone but I'm not sure if that's because of the 1900 spectrum, or if it was made for ATT and therefore can't get HSPA+42

depends on what you mean by "chinese"

international phones dont generally have hspa+ on the 1700/2100 band nor LTE on band 4.

If the phone in question supports the frequency that metro will be using, tmo's frequency, I would expect it to work just fine.

The part in this that I am still unsure of. Is tmo-metro going to stop using the 1700/2100 for hspa+ and just use 1900, like att and international carriers?
Then just run LTE on 1700/2100 AWS. Or they going to have a hodge podge mix hspa stays running on AWS but so does lte, wouldnt that limit the spectrum available for lte?

They have much more 1700AWS spectrum than 1900PCS. But they can cut back on the amount of spectrum they use for HSPA+ right now if 700 people on the same tower can reach 16mbps when using HSPA+42 move say 300 people to LTE and 100 to 1900MHz you can take tha spectrum from it and put it to HSPA+21 and still get similar speeds with the less users.

For what it is worth once BYOD goes active here is what I believe are the three non-carrier branded phones on the market you can buy new that use 1700.

I believe the soon to be release SG4 Google Edition will include 1700. And run $640 plus taxes and shipping.

The Sony ZL has two models. From shopbit the one with LTE costs $559 for the LTE variant, $531 for the non-LTE variant. Free shipping and sales tax only in CT. Prices, shipping, and taxes higher direct from Sony.

The Oppo 5 does not have LTE. And costs 499 dollars for 16gb, 569 dollars for 32gb. Prices include shipping from China.

Nexus costs 299 for the 8gb variant, and 349 for the 16gb variant. There are hacks to enable LTE. For me in New York shipping and taxes bring up another 40 to 50 dollars.

Other than that the options besides buying from metropcs are buying from t-mobile or an associated MVNO (direct or indirect via) or just buying something t-mobile based used.

I think they know that, I however I think they depend on the current customers all being cdma folks dont understand about byod that and they may not be worried about phone sales right now, just get the customer base up and then worry about selling phones.

There's so much that don't add up. There's so many unknowns and logical stuff that ain't making sense. I'm really curious to see how it's gonna play out for those that gave good metro coverage but bad t mobile coverage. I'd hate to think people are gonna wake up and see they have no service all of a sudden.

I wonder how it'll be for those of us that have good Metro and T-Mobile coverage? The DFW area has good coverage for both.

Very true, But its is still a win for Metro.

BYOD: More Customers bring there own phones Metro spends less money to on new phones and still gains more customers. What that means no need for Metro to have lots of phone just sitting around.

Also by bringing in your own phones makes the transition to GSM allot smoother and faster.

Hence more money comes in and less money goes out.

I think They smelled the Folgers in their cups today 29 bucks on the trio premia, avid, motion 29 bucks out the store with a new line of course. metro plan seems to be get rid of as many as we can flood the market so hard that they have no need to bring their own devices.

The reason why these phones are going for 29 bucks is because they will have 4G LTE, but please remember that these phones use 3G to fall back on when the 4GLTE is NOT around. Coming 2015 the 3G network gets shut off completely. The new phones coming after April 12, will begin to have HSPA+on them, Later when tmobile LTE network is running the phones will have 4G LTE with HSPA+ to fall back on....

My personal option is to wait before buying a new phone. I want a 4G LTE with HSPA+ inside.

my local store would let me change/port my number at any time. you could always go sign up for a new account, grab one of these. port your current metropcs number to tracfone, then after 35 days port it back to new "activation".

not exactly the best way to go about it, but if your someone looking to just get a new phone and keep the same number...

Shabby, thats kinda what im doing. I just switched to that Wal-mart family mobile that runs off tmobile to try it out because its cheaper than Metro, but I see myself switching back...especially because one of the stores by my house is offering a $35 4g plan which I never heard of but I will get more details later today.

I checked out that family mobile, and its data use is horrible(for me) other wise its a great option.

My girl and I are going to be switching to MetroPCS and taking advantage of this new "BYOP" program, but one issue I'm trying to figure out:

She will need a basic QWERTY phone, and although I see a couple good ones from AT&T, I'm worried that those won't work, because even unlocked, their frequency bands may be different from T-Mobile. She likes the idea of something like the Samsung Strive, but I'm worried that even unlocked it won't work.

As I'm hunting for this basic QWERTY unlocked phone for her, should I only be looking at ones designated for T-Mobile?

Those Qwerty phones you looked at for her are they going to be for data as well?

because if the phone will be just basic talk and text att phone is just fine, the frequency will be there for that.
