Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

Morning folks!

Feeling almost back to what passes for normal, but I'm stuck on a tech problem here and can't think my way out of it. Hope you can help. Here goes:

Got my shiny new laptop. It has its eccentricities but works for the most part. Now all of a sudden, I hook up my Nexus and absolutely nothing happens. No prompt to open folder to view files, no way to access my phone's files on the laptop.

Thinking it might be the laptop (even though I haven't touched any drivers), I hooked up a USB thumb drive to the same port. DING! Open folder to view files. I can see and access stuff all day.

Is it my new ROM? I grabbed my son's Nexus, which hasn't been ROMmed in ages, and plugged it in. NOTHING!

So: USB thumb drive reads all day in laptop, neither Nexus even evokes a noise or a prompt to install drivers. USB Cable bad? Nope. Each phone charges while hooked up, and Fast Charge is turned OFF on the phones. I'm stuck for a solution here, and appreciate any help you folks can send my way.

Thanks :)

Anti, thank you for doing my thinking for me this morning. No, I had NOT changed out the USB cable, because my feeble mind thought "Hey: the phone's charging... cable must be good!"

I did, however, just swap the cable out and plugged in Ginny. DING! "Open folder to view files" pops up every time.

So: it's a PARTIAL cable failure, something that I can admit I have not seen in a long, long, time. And now we have the laptop back to its eccentric self. Thanks again!

<----- STILL maintains that he knows everything, he just can't remember it all at once :p

Chief - the cable may not be bad, but it seems to be this new (hopefully passing) "fad" of making charge only cables where the pins to sync data are missing or disabled and allows the cable to only charge a device plugged into the USB port of a laptop.

Good morning everyone - happy Tuesday.

I have the entire Programming with Objective-C manual printed (126 pages) and some other documentation from their developer center in front of me at work and any downtime I will be reading that to start doing iOS development as well. Want to be able to build apps on both platforms.

I went with the 6/15 nightly from them and the gapps that were from rootzwiki
http://goo.im/gapps/...0301-signed.zip

So far, so good, battery life is better, and signal is better. Only had it a day or two, so I'll keep you posted.

Alright, my WH brethren.

It's a sad day for me. I have been running Sourcery since it came out for my precious Nexus, but today is the day I have to move away from it.

The last 2 versions, which are supposed to be the final version, have been plagued with System UI crashes. When it crashes, I have no pulldown or nav buttons, and it will be basically useless for hours. If I get into an app, the only way to get out is to restart the whole phone. Then as I am about to lose it, it will mysteriously show back up - only taking upwards of 4 hours.

Clearing cache, dalvik cache, fixing permissions, etc... doesn't do anything. I try ROM Toolbox, since it has an option to restart System UI, but nothing.

I have re-downloaded, re-installed, checked MD5 Sums, etc... I have not used TiBU to reinstall anything (tough for me not to do), but it still does it. I just think the last 2 version are not agreeing with my phone, and unfortunately I don't have a nandroid of the last working version :-( Maybe I'll have to ask TDev if he has an older version that I can install.

So on to the help: I have to find a new ROM to go to, and I have no idea where to start. Does anyone have a 2nd favorite, or one that I can go to that is similar?

AndroiDad: I missed your post, but I have the JBSourcery ROMs - virtually ALL of them - going back to 1.0

So let me know which ROM you want and I'll move it to dropbox and give you the link :)

EDIT: HAPPY BIRTHDAY Halon and Razor! :D :D :D

The Droid Twitter account is alive again. If it is for the X Phone I'm definitely done with it. Pretty much done with it now unless they have some thing up their sleeve.

Been there, done that for the launch of the Original X. Using the SAME ad campaign and doing the same thing (scavenger hunt) is not something new and exciting, which makes the new phone (whatever it may be) NOT new and exciting.

Thanks Chief. 5.3 and 5.4 have had the system ui issues. How about the one before that.

Thanks

Haha I see one of the comments had the same idea: Baked Alaska. ;)

So another new Droid huh? Yay! :p

To be fair, HTC Droid phones have been pretty darn good on Verizon, so I wouldn't rule out a Droid One as being a crap phone.

Hey - my son had an Eris for 2 years and he absolutely....

Well....

...hated it

Anti, I too immediately thought Baked Alaska. Insane heat for that far north! Meanwhile, a balmy 88 high here with rain possible. Very nice weather.

Ginny's rockin' JBSourcery 5.4 and no longer showing her age. She's absolutely loving this ROM, and if nothing comes out this year that totally WOWS me, we'll just keep truckin' till next year :)
