ROOTING FOR NEWBIES!

First off, thanks to xInterlopeRx who is a part of [OUDHS] (Official Unloved Devices Hit Squad) which brought us ports such as the TWRP and CWM recoveries which will be used to root this phone. Expect brilliant future development from this team! Be sure and give a thanks to them!

If you just bought the phone you are probably on Android OS 4.1.2 build LJ9.
If you are still on Ice Cream Sandwich LH1 (Android OS 4.0) this guide will still work for you, but you might want to upgrade to Jellybean using the "Update Firmware" option in System Updates found in your settings menu before you root.

Make sure you have the Samsung USB drivers installed on your computer.
You may find those here: Samsung_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_v1.5.14.0.exe

First thing you'll need to root this phone is a custom recovery. You will need to download TWRP 2.5.0.0 from here: http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/165

Now, you're gonna want to save these two files (you will flash them with your custom recovery after it's installed) and place them on your sd card:
busybox_v1.20.2-CWM+.zip
SuperSU-v1.34.zip

If you don't have Odin installed on your computer, do that now. You can find Odin here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2133496

You have downloaded and installed Odin and Samsung USB drivers listed above? You've downloaded the TWRP .tar file to your computer and you've place the SuperSU and Busybox zip files on your SD card? Okay, great!

Now, let's flash the custom recovery, which will be TWRP, on your device! And let's root this thing!

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE
  2. On your PC, launch the ODIN.exe file you unzipped from the prerequisites.
  3. On ODIN, click the PDA section and select the TWRP .tar you downloaded from the link above. Uncheck Auto Reboot! Make sure NO partition options are checked!
  4. Place phone in download mode by pressing Volume Down + Power. Hold until confirmation screen appears. Confirm by pressing Volume +.
  5. Connect your phone to the PC via USB cable
  6. Check ODIN. A small box on the upper left should turn blue and the dialog box must display "Added!!"
  7. Select "Start" and wait for it to finish. After it is complete, Odin will say PASS! After you see this, disconnect the USB cable from your phone and pull your battery out of your phone.
  8. Place the battery back in. While holding the VOLUME UP button, press the power and hold it until you see the green text that says "Booting into recovery". As soon as you see this green text let go of all the buttons!
  9. Click on Install in your custom recovery (TWRP) and navigate to where you placed the two files listed earlier which will be the Busybox and SuperSU zip. You will want to install both of those. Assuming it is successful, you will then want to select Reboot System from your TWRP menu.
  10. You should now be rooted! I assume you are familiar with what rooting does so there is no need to explain how SuperSU works. ENJOY YOUR ROOTED PHONE!

It doesn't look like it, but i want to be sure, that this process will not factory reset your phone.

I just tried this and Odin is crashing on my every time when I click "Start." I get the Windows "Odin downloader has stopped working" message right after it starts "File analysis..." Any suggestions?

Edit: Nevermind, I tried on a different computer with a different cable and it worked. Sorry about that.

In order to root my Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE from Sprint I had to use a newer version of Odin than was linked to in the first post. (That older version would crash soon after I hit the Start button.) I found the newer version at with file name:

download-odin-3-07

(Sorry I can't link to it, since this is my first post on Android Forums. It should be easily found on Google, though. For me it was the first link in Google and had a .gs domain name.)

To reassure those who are reluctant to use this file, I should note that the older version has a slightly different user interface. This newer version above matches the first poster's description better than the older one, since the small box (in step 6) turns blue in this version, as described in the post, while in the older one it turns green.

Also, beware the flashing in Odin takes a couple minutes. There are a couple of informational messages along the way after you press start that are encouraging along with a progress bar that quickly finishes, but these do not mean that the process is complete. You really do need to wait for the "PASS!" notice to appear in green in the upper left corner. Here is the output of the message box for my successful rooting of my phone:

So is the the link in the first post incorrect or superseded?:
"If you don't have Odin installed on your computer, do that now. You can find Odin here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2133496 "
So do we need to use the 3.07 and could someone post the correct link for the SG Victory? Thank you in advance.

I've never had a problem using the files that I post. I posted links to Odin 3.04 and Samsung drivers. They work for me.

I'm on Virgin is the first time I poke my head over here on the Sprint thread. Lol. A lot different over here on the dark side. Haha.

Quick question from potential Victory owner:

Once rooted (without custom ROM), is bloatware on the phone safe to remove via Titanium Backup? Or is this one of those "you touched my software I'm dead" phones?

You can remove most of it. I had to leave gallery because lock screen wallpaper would not change without it. I deleted browser, email, exchange, Google music, books, and movies, all of the virgin mobile stuff. I froze them at first though to make sure there were no negative consequences. Then I backed them up and deleted them.

Also delete Sprint apps like Voicemail, sprint updater, weather wallpaper, Google tts and some more. Only care should be taken to preserve process apps like sec . phone, sec.mms, system UI etc.

I actually like the voicemail app so some of it is preference. Just like some people like stock browser but I delete that first haha :)

Thanks all! I was thinking more of that "SprintID" garbage since I believe they install that on this phone as well? I actually use Sprint's Voicemail still on my OptiS.

Phone is here today! The Kernel thing seems unworked on for Sprint recently... the Virgin mobile thread has a kernel, but the last post there is about it messing up wifi. Does anyone have any updates on that for Sprint?

I'll probably keep stock kernel anyway. Looking forward to just rooting and custom recoverying this thing then removing the bloat.

I have the virgin mobile Samsung Galaxy Victory and rooted it successfully. However, I keep getting a Samusung update that requires a reboot to install. Every time I say yes it boots into TWRP and I can't find the pushed file from Samsung, so I simply reboot the phone from TWRP and then in about a week later I get the same update request.

Is there any way to update from TWRP?

Maybe you need the stock recovery. Use odin to flash stock recovery back, update, then re odin back twrp. When did you start getting samsung update notification? I haven't gotten that yet. Let us know how it goes.

There is a file lurking around called VictoryUnroot that you flash and it takes root and installs the stock recovery without you losing or having to backup anything. I think teachme directed me to it but it's in someone's file repo (g60 or xinterloperx I think). I'll try and find it.

I'll try and fart around with it this week, thanks guys!

By the way I've been getting this update notice for quite a while, a few months at least. It's about 74 mb.
