Help Problem Updating Nexus

Hi Everybody! I have a problem with my phone. When I got it , it was android 4 something. And the problem was it wouldn't update via the system update menu in the phone. I don't know how or what i did with the recovery boot system to get it up to 4.2. But now i am stuck at 4.2. I really want to update it to 4.2.2 but every time i try a dead android with a red triangle(its the devil I tell ya) shows up. It wont connect to Kies or pc studio either. Please help me update it, and keep it simple; I am not so good with this stuff ( dummies guide for android 4.2.2).

p.s. My Phone is a GSM rooted one. Thank you for your help.

If your phone was bought through a GSM carrier the updates depend on the carrier pushing it. If you want the latest update you need the Google build of the phone. You can flash the google build and then you will get updates directly from google. Do a search for directions to flash the yakju or takju build (takju is for US GSM).

Well, its definitly not a carrier. I bought it from an ordinary shop.

unless you bought directly from Google it may still have a carrier or samsung maintained build and won't update until the carrier/samsung pushes an update.

The best way to tell is to go into google maps app > settings > about phone

Under platform you will see something like "yakju, takju, yakjux, yakjuwx" etc. Only yakju and takju get immediate and direct updates from google.

Those other builds are typically carrier dependent.

Here's instructions for flashing. Just note, if your bootloader needs to be unlocked it will completely wipe your device SDcard and all....so make sure you back up everything.

I know that red triangle (with !) over the android all too well. Do you know if your phone has stock recovery? If it does, then a custom recovery like Clockwork Mod or TWRP should do the trick. For some reason, after I unlocked and rooted my phone, the stock recovery would give me the red triangle, but CWM would work fine.

I missed the red triangle part. Sounds like your phone is trying to update and failing.

If you have any custom recovery installed (like clockwork recovery), a stock system update will fail every time.
You either need to download and install a flashable update file or install the stock recovery and then try to update again.

Either way, find out if you have yakju build and if not I'd flash it to avoid any future update delays.

i checked it and its a takju build . Now what do i do. Also the ota updates download but they wont install

You need to have the stock recovery 'program' in order for the update to install. You must have either clockwork or another 3rd party recovery installed since you are rooted. If you try to install an update with anything but the stock recovery, the update will fail.

You have a couple of choices.

1. You can flash the stock recovery, unroot and then the phone will update.
2. You can flash the 4.2.2 update and stay rooted (though future updates also won't stick and you'll have to flash those as well)

I think you can do either via wugs toolkit.

If you're rooted with custom recovery, a more invasive method would be to do the following:
1)Boot into recovery and perform the 4 wipes(factory reset, cache, system, dalvik).
2)Reboot into fastboot and flash the update zip from the factory image manually. Don't use the script.
3)Reboot into custom recovery to re-root if desired.

Doing this will preserve your media like pictures and what not. You'll still lose apps, but can use titanium backup to restore them if you were rooted. :D
If you want the radios and/or bootloader, you can find a flashable zip version of it on xda and flash that in recovery.

Okay, I unrooted it. Now it has updated and I have 4.2.2. Well that was easier than expected. Thank you everybody.

I was gonna post a picture of me with my 4.2.2 but i guess the forums dont support uploads.

Enjoy your new (though late) update.
