Root Welcome to Jelly Bean - Rooting

Hey! I know the topic right now is the info/run tests ,but I read in some other thread the galaxy ring has had its kernel released and since the phones are nearly identical I was wondering if the root method for the galaxy ring might work? It's just downloading I think an apk and running it. I want to try it ,but I don't know what I would do if it didn't work and got bricked or something. Can anyone look into this thing further?

Links?

Okay some of this info has previously been posted I am only trying to make a single thread to help others.

All information is c
ourtesy of the identified forum members.

**As with any guidance provided you assume all risk using the information. You always run the risk of bricking your phone. All information provided by myself and the below forum members is given as guidance only.**

To return phone to ICS stock see comments by zjones:

Return to ICS stock

Once you are back to stock you should be able to use Kies to update your phone to latest Samsung Firmware. You will then need to wait for the OTA update or try to force the update with info from the following link.

To Force the Jelly Bean Update see comments by 13jpgbass:

Force OTA update

If you want to force the update go to application manager>all>google service frameworks>clear data>force stop and then check for updates again, and it should (should) push the update.

---------------------------------

If you were previously rooted you can follow the following information by tyler1998:

Return to root after Jelly Bean Update

http://androidforums.com/reverb-all...it-shabbypenguin-rush-forums.html#post5837311

------------------------------

Following, which is similar to info posted by tyler1998 should allow all to root:

This is not fully my work but is guidance obtained from comments by ShabbyPenguin in the Galaxy Rush forum and communications with xInterlopeRx.

You will need:

Odin 3.04

Samsung drivers

Reverb Clockworkmod Recovery Test 8

SuperUser

BusyBox

Once you have obtained the above files and the OTA Jelly Bean Update procede with the following steps.

1. Install the Samsung drivers
2. Install Odin
2. Plug in the phone and wait for the drivers to finish installing
3. Place the SU zip and Busybox zip files on your sd-card
4. Power off the device.
5. Put the device in Download mode by pressing VOL-DN then Power. Hold until a choice menu appears
6. Push volume up to chose Download Mode
7. Fire up Odin.
8. Chose the recovery .tar file using the PDA slot option
9. Uncheck "Auto-Reboot"
10. Chose "Start"
11. When Odin is done, unplug the phone.
12. Remove the battery
13. Replace the battery
14. Press Vol-Up then Power until the words "Booting into recovery" appear in the upper left corner
15. You should now have the CWM recovery (test 8) installed

Note if you are unable to access the CWM recovery or reboot prior to battery pull you will need to start over again. The auto-reboot places stock recovery.

16. In recovery select flash install zip from sdcard
17. Select busybox zip file then when that is complete select SU zip file
18. Once completed reboot phone.

You should now have root.

Major thanks to xInterlopeRx!! He has helped a lot with this phone and he does not even own it.

I already have jellybean and have never been rooted.
Will this root guide work for me?

There's not much info to go off of - tests either, since this is JB OotB, unmodified. I'm using Odin 3.0.4, the Samsung drivers installed correctly, and the .tar file seems to flash fine and I get a pass from Odin. Success 1 / Fail 0. When I try to go into CWM afterwards, the SGR says it will enter recovery, then the screen flashes blue and turns off. I'm holding the power button and the volume up/+ button when from the time the SGR is off, through the time it says it will boot into recovery. I've also tried letting go of the power button when that message appears, and still no dice. I also tried the .tar download direct from the OUDHS website, and nada. If the Ring's recovery-flash method works for the Reverb, I'd be happy to do it as long as it doesn't brick my device (kind of imperative that I need it always functional for a while yet). I have not yet tried this from a different computer, but will do so tonight if I remember to, and I am using the Samsung cable that came with the device.

And that's all I've got.

I'm not sure if this is gonna help, but if we (as a community) have "2 stages of SGR"...that is pre JB and post coming from different retailers, maybe the thread on the new Galaxy Ring...All things root could be of some assistance; It had been hypothesized that the Ring is a re-jacketed Reverb with all/nearly all the same specs. & hardware...the ROOT method is NOTHING like the Reverb's

Followed these instructions to root 2 Reverbs bought in Dec 2012. After JB update in April,. both phones would screen lock, touch pad crash 3-5 times a day. Sometimes even during phone calls. This root method WORKED first time on both phones.

Also used another thread to replace the recovery with CWM 8.

We complained to virgin mobile about the phones... they sent 2 new ones. These had JB 4.1.2 factory installed. Tech support assured us that the screen lock, touch pad crash symptom was very common, and is due to the update arriving via download. So, the factory phones with 4.1.2 would not have the same problem. We activated both phones,.. and in less than 24 hours both phones touch pad function crashed, and we were back popping batteries.

So,.. i decided to root those new phones! GET THIS! They both now have completely nonworking and un-repairable recovery modules. Used Odin to push CWM 8,.. no go. said passed on 12 attempts. Pulled battery and tried to power up in recovery only to see a blue screen flash,.. then Powered up in Regular Stock JB 4.1.2. Both phones did this. Used stock USB cable. Even tried to take CWM 8 off and put back on the stock recovery. When I do that,.. same thing. No recovery,..

These phones are recovery bricked. I have tried 4 different recoveries, and am now up to 20+ attempts on each unit. No dice.

We are now back using our original rooted phones with ICS super stock ROMs,. working fine. No screen lock in 3 days and counting. and the phone is over all faster.

Has Samsung or Virgin Mobile done something with the new crop of Reverbs to prevent recovery replacement?

Has anyone had this happen to them,... and fixed it?

nychus...Do these recovery bricked phones boot normally? If they do, I would say that you are a perfect candidate to test out a theory.

Although as of this post it does not have a working CWM recovery, the new VM phone Galaxy Ring does have a working root process that does not involve Odin-just downloading. Seeing as how you have 4 (if I read correctly) phones, and 2 of them are "factory JB4.1.2's" this method may work on these types of Reverbs as well (i.e. they might have the same/similar kernels). Again, I'm not a developer and admittedly, really don't know squat about this field; but it has been observed and hypothesized that because they are so similar hardware-wise, they might be able to "borrow a cup of sugar" from each other once in a while.
If you do indeed still have these phones, it may be worthwhile to check it out, because if it does, cross development can't be far behind.

Maybe since the galaxy rush galaxy reverb are so similar we shuold have like a community where we botg come together and if the galaxy ring does end up having basically the same kernel they can join too and we'll all just be one big community! :) just a thought.

IDK; AF mods and developers would probably have to intervene and create something of that sort...but not a bad idea...could call it '3 R's'...

I have the same issue with Out of Box 4.1.2 just recently shipped to me. I tried reverb-cwm-test-8 and cwm-touch-iconvmu-signed(cwm6030) for the Reverb with no success. I tried different versions of TWRP made for other Samsung phones, with different results, but still no success. Odin3v304 does flash the recovery successfully, but the previous CWM's made for the older ICS based Reverbs do not boot when i finally get into Recovery mode with the OutOfBox 4.1.2 Reverbs.

Would it be possible to repack the stock kernel with a modified adbd binary that would allow us to manually install Superuser.apk, su, and busybox with adb? (Read that on an SIII root forum)

Yeah, unfortunately OotB JB SGRvrbs also have the touch-screen freezing issue. I really do believe now that it is RAM-related, though. I've been actively (once every few hours) ending processes and using GO Launcher EX to clear processes/free up RAM, and at one point I had only a few MB of RAM left with only a couple of the normal processes running. That could be a RAM leak on an pre-installed bloat app, or something else entirely. I know that is hasn't been from any of the apps I'm using though, because so far I'm using everything I did on the OE which were all fine - even tried uninstalling and reinstalling them. However, since I've been vigilant about this, the issue hasn't cropped up again.

Also, it should be noted that while Android is good at managing its RAM, it isn't great, and bloatware makes that auto management irrelevant, unfortunately :p

As for whether or not a repacking is possible, it should be. How would one do it? No idea. :D

If I'm not mistaken, 6.0.3.0 is a .zip to flash from within recovery. I've never known it to work thru Odin.

SGR bought xmas 2012, got the OTA upgrade June, 2013. Follow the Welcome thread got it rooted and CWM installed. Made a backup. and installed partytime ROM. Saw the above thread about root for ring. Restored to JB unrooted, tried the ring method. No go. restored back to party time. I also tried the ring method on other device, a jb tablet, no go. Op V ZV9, no go.

I wouldn't worry about it. I've used both JB and ICS Party Time. The ICS version is more stable and better imo.

OK sorry. I've rooted other phones before, but I'm a little confused here.

Do I have to go back to stock, using the guide at the beginning, then follow the root guide, then force an update. or do I just follow the guide now since I'm already at JB.

If your phone came with JB already, it can't be rooted, yet. Well, I'm sure it can, we just haven't figured out how yet. This guide was primarily for those who started with ICS and then updated to JB.

~..I tried to root my Samsung reverb (M950) with JB 4.1.2 but It didn't work for me, and now i have yellow triangle on my opening screen and 2 counts of Custom Binary, please help me guys to take off this yellow triangle?.. :(please..thanks in advance.. :weep:

Most of us have yellow triangles now, and my flash count is at 20 something
Yellow triangle doesn't mean anything is wrong.

~..So what to do next?..is that mean that I can now do a ROOTING and HOW?..:hmmmm::dontknow:
:(

First, did your phone come with jelly bean, or did it come with ice cream sandwich and then updated to jelly bean?
If it came with jelly bean already installed, then this won't work for you.
