Root Unwanted apps

Its vista Home Premium SP2, I just don't know why all other commands will work but not the shell command. I rooted my phone installed the recovery. fastboot and push work fine but when I try to do "adb shell" thats it, time to restart the comp. My printer ont even work until I restart.

Hmmm. I was using Business Ed, but I dont think that should make the differece though. Have you tried uninstalling the drivers for the devices that are giving you issues, complete power down and then power back on and then install the latest drivers you can find? This has helped me on a few issues at work. Actually had one time when a driver was messing up all other devices. Once I uninstalled it and reinstalled the latest, everything was working 100% again.

its nice having a phone that I can say I am glad I have Linux to use with it. cause this was very easy having Linux. my previous phones i had to deal with trying to work around windows in some fashion or another.

I will give this a try, are the drivers in the usb folder of sdk the most current? or is are there newr drivers that I should be using? Thanks for all your help.

I have removed MANY apps, and had no ill effects.
I finally got smart and make NAND backups before each questionable deletion, but I haven't had to back-up :) yet.

facebook
socialnetwork

Now I'm thinking about removing the voice dialer, gtalk and services, and more.

Do you have to remove Socialnetwork.apk/odex to remove the facebook app from the drawer. I removed Facebook.apk, but the app still shows up and works.

Thanks,

Thanks,
Check the data/app/ directory, there are often apps stored in there too.

Any idea if I can get rid of Flickr...?

I had no problem removing flicker. Just delete the .apk

To ALL:
Never forget the NAND backup.
Results can vary between devices, so cover your a$$!!!

Quick question, if you root your Eris and remove these apps's when it comes time to upgrade to the official 2.1 release will there be a issue?

Thanks Spud, that was it. data/app/ com.facebook.katana.apk It's gone!!!

TDianna,
Most ROMs will disable the official OTA 2.1 release, from what I understand.

Correct.
AND:

Also, whenever you install a new custom ROM, you should be sure that OTA updates are disabled. Many ROM's will do this by default, but to make sure, do this:

Launch a command prompt and go to your tools directory, and type these commands:
adb shell
su
cd /etc/security
ls
If you see a file called "otacerts.zip" then do the following:
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
mv otacerts.zip otacerts.zip.old

Be sure to thank him!

Or as I understand it, you could lose root.
If 2.1 ever does come officially to the Eris, you will have access to the same quality in the roms made with it, AND the freedome of root.

FWIW, I got rid of all Weather-related files with no problem (I downloaded Weather Widget - Free by Android Apps in the market, it works great and stays updated)/

Also got rid of Footprints, no adverse effects yet...

Have you used Maps/Nav without Footprints installed. I'd also like to get rid of that app, but don't want to mess up Navigation.

Also, have you or Spud removed "VoiceSearch" ? I think that's the one I removed and my keyboard wouldn't "pop up" afterwards, but I'm not sure if that was the one.

I did remove VoiceDialer and Voice Recorder.......I refuse to yell at my phone for any reason, haha.

My Eris is not rooted
OK, well we can always go online to Personal Communications Devices
and update our Eris.

While searching the forums I think I noticed a way of getting 2.1 back to 1.7 so you can receive the update...am I correct?

I just tried it out real quick for about 5 minutes after I got rid of them, but didn't notice any problems with maps/Nav or with the camera. (If you try to click on Footprints in Navigation, nothing happens, but that's to be expected)

I've been toying with getting rid of VoiceDialer too... I just dont know when I would ever use it - I'm with you on never yelling at my phone like an idiot.

Me: Call Bob
Phone: Did you say "Call John?"
Me: NO
Phone: Calling John...
Then I have to scramble to end the call, and if I don't do it in time John calls back asking why he has a missed call from me... just not worth it.

I ditched Footprints and the Navigation panel, Navigation in Google maps is still working. I only did a short 40 second test, but it did work.

I also took a picture with the camera and saved it in photos, no problems.

.....and installed the GL live wallpaper fix :D

I'll post back up if I notice any problems, and also with all the apps I've removed so far.

i was messing around with titanium and found out that titanium will unistall system epps i got rid of all kinds of extra crap, i havent seen anyone mention it... hope it helps

You ditched Footprints and Nav still works? Or you ditched both Footprint and Nav? Just to clarify because I would love to get rid of Footprints.

Not sure if this is just me, but I noticed that when I installed sense-able 2.0 I didnt have the footprints app and my navi has worked just fine. Now, I will say I just started taking pics with the camera since root and have had problems. This may not be related to footprints, but I have taken pics of the same subject under the same professional lighting set-up and some pics came out unfocused or really bad quality.

Also noticed that my txt msg notification and vibrate are REALLY delayed after receiving a txt. This is after I have removed the stock messages app since I never use it. Delay is anywhere from 3-10 seconds maybe. My handcent pop-up with come up, I will read the txt and a few seconds later phone will vibrate and notification will play....weird...not sure if its due to deleted msg app.

I used Titanium for a while, it's a really nice app. I think I uninstalled three or four apps while at work :D, but other than that I didn't see much use in it so I uninstalled it too. I'd rather use Nandroid to back up and I'm getting used to command prompts again, which are actually kinda fun.

So far, I've deleted the following:
Stocks
Weather
VisVoiceMail
Browser
QuickOffice
MMS
Talk
Mail
Facebook
Deskclock
VoiceDialer
Voice Recorder
Navipanel

Would still like to get rid of:
Call History - but can't find it
People Search - but can't find it
VoiceSearch - but the keyboard doesn't pop up with this app missing.
Settings - just haven't tried this one yet.

Fun stuff!

Hope you understand what Titanium does. It will bring back apps and settings that you back up and can be redone to your new ROM. NAND will do a complete backup/recovery. So if you flash a new ROM and do a NAND restore, you will just have lost your new flash.

Side note: You can use Titanium to find out where things are stored. Just click on the name of the apk you trying to remove, hit uninstall, and it will tell you name and location of it. So then you can remove it via any way you want.

Yeah, I was actually thinking of this after I posted, I did use Ti to back up a few of the apps that I uninstalled, so I re-downloaded it just to have around. I'll donate as well as it is a nice safe backup measure to keep on hand.
Thanks Droid for pointing this out. Ha, now that I've deleted everything, I may get bored and have to reflash Vanilla, start all over, and backup all the apps I delete.....I love this :D

Nice think about donate version is it automates the reinstall of your apps and if you are like me and flash all the time, this is a BIG time saver.

you can select what you dont want reinstalled, i like not needing a computer for everything, found a good terminal emulator and now i almost dont need a computer

After a lot of trial and error, I'm pretty sure removing Talk.apk results in a gmail error where new emails don't get pushed to the phone...
