Will using the Nexus 7 tablet charger to power my phone ruin it?

I lost the samsung OEM charger that came with my phone, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and have been unsatisfied with the cheap knock-offs that are being sold on Amazon. They don't charge as fast, my experience with my OEM charger was that it would recharge in about 2 hours. The knockoffs on Amazon that claim to be OEM charge like in 6 hours. Someone recommended to use the charger for the Nexus 7 Tablet. It's only $15 on Amazon.

There is no harm IMO in using a lower current or lower charge rate USB charger. It is actually easier on the battery to charge at a 6 hour rate than a 2 hour rate.

The tablet's charger won't do any harm on your phone :)

Charging as fast as the charger which came with your phone?
I think at least in three hours, but I don't know it for sure.

There's really no danger in using any other charger as long as it is a 5V charger intended for USB powered devices like phones or tablets. The phone's circuitry regulates the amount of current going into the battery. The GN takes a 1 amp charge like most smartphones. Some tablet chargers may put out 2 amps, but the phone will only draw 1amp into the battery. Many chargers, especially car chargers only put out .5 amps and will charge very slowly. Also, note that many dual USB chargers will list the combined amperage of the two ports....so if you get a 1amp dual USB charger it may only be .5 amp and .5 amp.

I've been using my Nexus 7 charger to charge my GNex since I got the tablet and that's been since the tablet initially came out. No harm so far.

From an electrical point of view, as stated above, there should be no problem.

However, the size of the plug on my Nexus 7 charger is slightly larger than the plug on the GNex charger (so that it fits the slightly larger port on the tablet). There's only a slight difference, probably all within design tolerances, but there is a difference.

Both chargers work OK in both devices, but (based on past experience with other devices), the GNex charger will become loose in the GNex if I use the Nexus 7 charger with it.

This shouldn't matter in your case, because you don't want to use the GNex charger again.

I am using whatever USB charger I have lying around for any device that can be charged by USB.

I have also been charging my GNEX with my Nexus 7 charger - no problems at all, but of coarse, it is not a guaranty...

You're right about the size difference. It caused my GNex to often "think" it was in the charging state, causing a run-down in the battery as described in another post here. I registered here just to warn the OP, as it's been a huge pain for me. The battery now usually only lasts 1-2 hours when it's acting up. The only way I could fix it is by taking the phone apart and replacing the charge flex cable, which I never got around to doing.

To the OP, I'd be very careful about using the Nexus 7 charger. If you want a rapid charger, I'd recommend the Blackberry Playbook charger. It's ~$15 on Amazon.
