Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

The only possible news I can think of with the LA thing is that maybe that's when they'll fire up the L.A. 4G network? Would be pretty nice for Sprint to brag that it turned on 4G coverage in New York and L.A. within the same week.

I actually had that same thought as you, SprintFun. I'd love it if LA got WiMax/4G up and going prior to the EVO being released!

Good post PyroSporker, I agree there's not much point in discussing/arguing it before it's released. It's just the first time I saw the 65k spec so it got me going trying to figure it out. A conclusive test would be if there was an hd2 next to an evo, with both showing a full screen vertical image of a gradient from black to medium/dark grey. The hd2 would show clear steps in the gradient and we'd be able to see how the EVO compared. Maybe self-praise could test this out if he has a unit on hand?

Interesting topic. The only problem I had with the Supersonic and HD2 in the past was that all three devices have a TFT/TFD LCD screen, yet only the Droid have the 16.7 million spec. Only thing I came up with was the Droid's special resolution. (480 x 854) The EVO and HD2 480 x 800 resolution makes the screen look so vivid, regardless of the 65K limit. If you follow the media blogs and the videos, one of the first thing people take notice is how beautiful the screen is. I wouldn't worry about it. EVO has a different touchscreen technology now, so strange things may happen. This wasn't the same screen used during the CTIA, but personally I think will remain 65K.

A Star-Studded Evening in Hollywood Celebrating Jerry Bruckheimer Sponsored by Sprint is not a EVO 4G event. A lot of shameless plugs here and there, but that's it. NYC event is starting to look suspect to me too, but a lot of people I know behind the scenes said they are going to this event. I have to find out more at my job on Monday.

On last thing, Sprint Football Live isn't sponsored by ESPN. ESPN Mobile TV is. NFL didn't dump Sprint for Verizon. Sprint was asked to pay a huge renewal fee for the application, and Sprint said they'll pass. NFL asked both Verizon and AT&T, and Verizon accepted the 4 year, $750 million deal. Sprint weren't bullied or forced to give their app to Verizon, like the media keep foolishly writing.

i dont think the 720p has anything to do with the number of colors does it and everything to do with the number of pixels?

from what i remember reading the screen will max at 65k colors which if is the same as the hd2 looked fine when i played with one at a tmobile kiosk. still though, if true its a little disappointing considering the iphone can do millions? in the end if i cant tell then it wont matter to me.

According to the video above Android 1.6 maxes out at 65k the HD2 screen is capable of 262+K

Geesh i guys talk alot. I haven't been able to get on for awhile and has to read through lik 20 pgs and missed alot... on the other hand. I work for Geico/Travelers and I can say that it really doesn't make sense to incure your phone through your homeowners, especially if ur co does loss surcharges. Homeowners is really for big losses so they'll remove a loss free discount if ur getting it and as well charge u a hefty loss surcharge for 3-5years dep on the co... so if u don't wanna get it through sprint or best buy, I would recommend just being careful w/ur phone

Another thing I was thinking about, even if the EVO's screen is merely 65k and for 720p, it requires a higher degree colors, does that really matter?

I mean, think about it, the camera itself will be wholly different from the front screen, is it not possible the camera can display higher colors?

Also realize that although you can record in 720p, you obviously cannot playback the video on your phone at that resolution.

Just an idea I had, I may be wrong though.

I'm a woman and I CAN'T WAIT to get an EVO! I love having the latest and greatest in cell phones! My family always teases me about getting new phones all the time.
Ditto, and I am a woman as well. Plus very excited about upgrading my piece of crap pre to the evo wohoo.Welcome to the forum.

Of course you can if you can stream 720p and dl and view 720p you certainly should be able to view what you record I would think.

I like how everyone disses the Pre, and though it really does seem to have horrible build quality, you guys are all still lucky, I'm stuck with a late 2008 model Samsung Rant, lol.

I cannot wait to ditch this phone. It's like some of you guys are switching from a PS2 to a PS3, and I'll be switching from a Super Nintendo to a PS3, heh.

I wish I had a Pre instead right now, but it won't matter in a couple of months :)

Maybe I worded it a bit weird, you'll certainly be able to play back any video you record, but you would not be able to play at it's native 720p, the EVO's display simply doesn't offer the higher resolution that 720p does.

You'd need to either move the video to a computer, or use the HDMI cable to display it it's proper full-resolution display on an HDTV or monitor.

That is pretty sweet. I have little doubt that eventually Android will catch up to/beat the app count in the Apple store.

With Android phones gaining more casual interest through the Incredible and HTC EVO, the imminent upgrade to Froyo, the possibilities of new kinds of apps with the 4G network, and not to mention Flash support, which some devs have already started to use to build unique apps, the amount of apps will only continue to increase exponentially.

You are right doesn't say you can watch ANYTHING in 720P only "High-quality".

High-quality video streaming and downloads at 3G and 4G data speeds
Capture and share HD-quality video (720p) from your phone
Output pictures, slides and videos in HD quality (720p) via HDMI cable (sold separately)

I really don't see Android surpassing iPhone, sorry. To be realistic, the iPhone is still the big kid on the black, with a VERY sizable lead in terms of Apps and users. A fragmented platform will hamper Android for the time being, IMO. The money for Devs is still on the iPhone OS, so thats where the main development will be.

sure you can, don't confuse colors with resolution..:)

I feel the same way sprint fun. Being out spec by memory processor etc , doesn't replace liquid software.

I hate to admit, but I'm going to ck out the incredible, as a foray into android. And if it's good I'll move on to evo in June. Theres going to be a learning curve so I'll give it time.

I don't think it's about apps or sdk money as much as a daily fluid experience with the software. It all just works.

Evo and sprint could be something really great and you guys are amazingly patient. We will see......

You Tube as all kinds of videos from the cita even from las vegas. Sprint really showed evo off and what the evo can and will do. I am very excited.

I went to my local sprint store today to pay most of my bill..the other half will be paid in two weeks..lol. Anyways, I mentioned the evo and how excited I am about it. Well the sprint lady said that the other employee is to and asked me if I knew when it was suppose to come out. LOL I said I have heard around June 6th or June 13th. She said the reginal manager told her sometime in May..so it would be awesome if it did come in May instead of June..hopefully. :-) Makes me want the evo even more.

Yes you can, please search Youtube as it was displayed at the CITA event.

I'm not sure what point you're trying make here. If it has to do with the EVO displaying 720p, it is impossible.

The resolution of 720p is 1280x720. The EVO's is 800x480.

There is no argument here. Any video recorded at 720p would have to be downscaled to the EVO's resolution for playback on the device, hence it would not be 720p.

However, connecting an HDMI cable to an HDTV or monitor capable of outputting 720p would get you the full resolution display.

My opinion on the screen is as follows: Let's wait and see the screen before we try to make a judgement on it based upon 65k colors vs. 256k colors (just a fake example I thought of). Color and how things look displayed is SO subjective so to try to quantify it accurately seems pretty silly to me, especially as a pre-release judgement.

BUT

Here is some pics I found that give a little insight into the ordeal:
Sprint-HTC-EVO-4G-vs-HTC-HD2-And-Desire.jpg

Evo next to HD2. You can tell that the Evo is a little bit brighter, more vibrant and crisper (I dont think it is, but hopefully the HD2 is not in half-lit screen saver mode right before the display turns off)

Sprint-HTC-EVO-4G-vs-HTC-HD2-And-Desire-7.jpg

Just for some more comparison:
Evo next to Desire. You can tell that the Desire appears to have a brighter more vibrant display (partly becuase it has a color background vs. a black/grey one). Also desire has a AM-O-LED WVGA screen. It is brighter and vibrant, but looks a little off and washed in my opinion.

I don't want to continue the debate of which screens are better, and how many colors the device are going to come with - I am in the wait and see camp. These pictures, although preliminary, show us exactly what we are looking at without ambiguous numbers and specifications that are subjective.

Just my 2
