Root How To Root HTC Evo 4G 2.3.5

After you shut down and pull the battery, hit the UP volume and the power. This takes you to the boot menu. :)

You will need to hold the down volume not the up...after the battery pull you need to hold the power and DOWN volume to get to the bootloader

From what you've posted there, it seems as if it is rooted already and fully s-off'ed.:)

Can you post back what your bootloader screen says, but I think you are fully rooted ;)

We can recommend a rom that is specifically used for devices such as yours without all the other bs that an activated phone uses :)

I just need to find it :)

Thank you for the fast reply!
When I got the ph used it was froyo & 2 apps I wanted to use weren't compatible so I got it ro gingerbread.
But when I go to remove bloatware I can't. I checked for RW access
tested it with a root checker app & it says not rooted?

I'll post once it boots up

okee dokee...when you said you got it to gingerbread, how did you do so?
Reason I ask is, if you did it via OTA, then I think you lost root.

Or if you flashed a GB (gingerbread) based rom, then something else is awry.

It kept failing over & over on OTA so I researched how to update to gingerbread w/out doing OTA & manually updated the update.zip

SUPERSONIC EV3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-2.10.0001
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMELC03_16ac
RADIO-2.15.00.11.19

Ah, depending on what .zip it was, perhaps you lost root. (fwiw, never accept an OTA while rooted:) )

Ok...then I/we need a couple things:

1. The bootloader info.
2. Do you have the superuser app in your app drawer.
3. What recovery do you have?
4. do you have the link to that .zip file? Just to see what .zip it was.

you are s-off which is only part of the process(though it is the biggest part), the next step is getting superuser. you will need both the app and file you flash....unless you flash a custom rom. a custom rom will have su cooked in......what rom are you on? if you are on stock then you need to flash the su file.

for me i would recommend that you flash mikg3.11 it is waaaaaay better then stock IMO.

you can find the info here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

use the first method and skip down to getting recovery(if you do not have one) and also how to flash a rom for instructions.

Well, I couldn't find the download link there but there was a link to XDA and the rom from preludedrew..

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878020

Nevertheless, what recovery do you have now? Clockworkmod I would assume?

Can you boot into it? Do you have the Superuser app in your app drawer?

Edit: oh for the love of....ninj'ed again....it's been a while there OCN :)

ok I have the pc36img file on my sdcard root & can boot into the hboot or recovery (whatever they are called) menus, I think I am right there but I don't know what to do?

I'm starting to get confused I've read so much.
what is the difference between update.zip & recovery

Sorry:(
to put it simply, there are 3 different "os" on you device.
The main one--where you use your phone for calling/texting/using apps.

The bootloader (or h-boot)---where you found this info:

SUPERSONIC EV3 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-2.10.0001
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMELC03_16ac
RADIO-2.15.00.11.19
OCT 15 2010, 12:07:00

And recovery--recovery is a screen where you can flash roms/make backups/flash different .zips and alot more. A custom recovery is what we need to install.
The phone comes with its own recovery, but it is very limited.

You can access recovery from your bootloader.

If you do that, what recovery do you have? Clockworkmod? or TWRP or Amon RA (names of different custom recoveries) :)

well, using step 2
I copied the PC36IMG file to the root like it said to & then shut down & booted into hboot.
it's not updating when I go to hboot using the PC36IMG method from the guide???
It says .....no image or wrong image

o.k...sometimes that happens if you don't rename it exactly as PC36img.zip.

Make sure there are no extra ".zip" at the end.
Otherwise bootloader will not see it.

ok, I opened a command prompt to look at it & it is PC36IMG.zip

as it should be, right?

This is fighting me at every step.
Thanks for your patience & help
