Root Public Mobile

Just got the N861 from Public Mobile. I know that there is a problem using Instagram whereas the pictures are upside down when using the front facing camera. Today I noticed that ZTE has a new upgrade for the N861 for Public Mobile. I want to try it but don't want to brick my phone... Anyone try this upgrade? I would supply a link but the forums won't allow me to.

DRV_HS_G_2066V1.0.0B11 this the name of the file upgrade from the ZTE sight.. Can anyone shed some light into this ?

That is just the drivers for the phone...there is no new update yet...

Your phone fires have ota updates tho...in your settings under ''about phone'' the build number is it b06 or b07?

Hey I got my PM n861 yesterday. Do I have a bad phone?

I get excessive static noise when using headphones (same on any output source). The noise gate release in the phone is so short that it cause clicks and pops, like it's 0ms brickwall pure evil. They have clearly pushed the analog gain over the roof if this is by design. Using audio apps, I need to allow an extra -10db of head room and filter the highs slightly to avoid sound distortion. What I'm left with is audio that's not loud enough, a tolerable noise level but almost every level drop in the dynamic range is still producing clicks. I can't count how many times it clicks in a track. Without using any app or filters, there's no escape. With touch sounds enabled, playing with settings or simply any sound triggered creates noise that clicks away. It's like the phone's system audio files were too soft and they compensated by boosting the analog gain to noise distortion levels and fixed it with gate. My Rise never produced any signal noise or artifacts. :(

Dear Goatman, the time wasted. At least I can still return it if it's a bad phone. Could this be fixed by tweaking whatever is handling the audio drivers? If this is a known issue how do you live with it? :O

(I'm currently using smartmanvartan's untitled rom, I made stock & root img recovery states if that can help anyone to help me :D and testing with radio, wifi, usb charging, whatever, on and off, affected me a lot but not the noise.)

EDIT:
It seems it's bad shielding. I can hear the cpu working in the noise.

I only get this when the phone is plugged in fir charging while in listening to music but when audio kicks in it usually goes away like if they had a filter...are you plugged in when you listen to music?

Yeah I tried all the easy stuff. But really i figured it out. The phone's audio jack shielding is bad. Going in settings and turning "touch key sounds - on" if I then put the phone on vibrate and silent the noise is constant. Then whatever I do that triggers the CPU will affect the noise. Like how old pc cpu's used to talk at every task you would do on windows, or how a laser mouse would affect badly shielded speakers when moving.

I find I get smoother performance when the CPU is set at 122mhz-768mhz. I'll test it later today to see if It has decreased the noise. Looking back on that "key sounds on silent" test I did, I think it will help. Could be wrong though.

------------------
For anyone wondering:
122-768mhz is slower to respond (not annoying it responds very well) but it completely canceled the lag spikes from stock 245-1401mhz. The battery life is "in theory" doubled. (I don't use apps full of useless features and I don't play video games.)

EDIT : "Maybe it did help, so i call placebo on it. -> No difference in noise whatsoever but really i could careless, all animations disabled, no bloated apps, 122-806mhz is my new always on setting. The speed response from the phone now is unbelievable! Found a work around for the noise, put the volume louder on the phone and use a volume control on headphones, lowering it a bit enough to mask the noise. I don't experience glitched audio anymore (maybe I broke something or it was app related) so listening to music while on the go is good."

Hey I forgot to mention, when I have earphones plugged in and change the volume, the beep is heard in both the earphones and the phone. (As if no headset was connected. I have a headset icon that appears in the status bar but it's not interactive.)

I don't understand why this happens? It's annoying when other people are trying to sleep.

Any thoughts?

The headphone issue mixed with the interference you are getting when paying audio tells me you have a defective headphone jack.I don't have any of those issues and my phone is heavily used...the only time I get interference it's when I'm in my car and I'm charging while it's plugged in to the stereo. But the second I pay music's the interference goes away...it did the same thing on all of my phones...

Just checked. Mine does it too. When I'm browsng my music files the phone beeps if I change the volume. When the music is playing it doesn't do that.

Do you all think having a separate Public Mobile root forum along side this one will help or is just this thread OK?

I'm interested in getting my phone rooted but I'm not sure on the state of progress, and I'm almost a total blank on any tech issues.

I found PM extremely non helpful in understanding and policy - after I was promised by sales that I could use my pc monitor as a screen when using G3.
So I'm looking around to see where things stand.

I'm in favour of a PM root forum.

Did you root it prior to trying the update app?
I haven't done anything to it except try some apps to tether it, which of course didn't work.
Then I decided to root it but got scared off when I read about the brick and now I'm reading through repeatedly to make sure of correct model (with Boost/Public Mobile 860/861 discussion being slightly intertwined in threads/fixes/instructions), and for where to start.

The first post on this thread has all the info you need for rooting... :)...as for the b06 to b07 update not going thru, try doing a factory reset and trying again....

Thank you. I just tried the factory reset and no difference resulted. Came back to b06 only

Ok try this...there's a link to the stock rom at the bottom of the first post in the useful information section. It install with stock recovery and the instruction are in the zip but it's pretty straight forward... Just extract the update.zip file on to your sd card then go into settings->about phone-> software update-> update from sd card.after you're done see if it will update to b07

Thank you. smartmanvartan.

I'm going to have to learn a bit more first because i'm not entirely sure of the instructions yet. :D

There's a big gulf between what you know automatically and what I don't know. It's the first time I'm using an android, too.

I've downloaded and unzipped and identified the files but there's something wrong I thnk. Maybe I'll try over again after I remove all the files. I might have duplicate copies or something .

PM has me marked down as attempting to alter the phone after I complained about the promise made on one level and prevented on the other.
Warranty is as good as void already so I'm hesitant about pushing any buttons I can't yet account for.

Easy instructions:

1. Download stock rom from first post
2. Extract zip, find update.zip in extracted files
3. Place update.zip on root of sd card
4. Go to settings->about phone->software updates->update from sd card. Phone should reboot.
6. Try updating to b07.
7. ???
8. Profit!

Btw, this option isnt available in Boost b11 about phone settings. Not sure about PM as I have the Boost version of the phone.

Thank you ojdjm.

For this I don't need to first do everything in the opening post as below?

Use the c++ tool junkie2100 made for us and make sure you have the DRIVERS installed and follow the instructions on his thread.
I thought the idea was to install the update file using or through the stock recovery from the flashable zip file also found in the OP.
Sorry, total ignoramus here.
I end up 5 threads removed just following up on info I don't know and might need to :0

No. Just do as I instructed.

If that does not work (i suspect it wont, honestly), then you will have to use stock recovery to flash the update.zip. But you MUST have stock recovery. Will nto work in clockwork mod recovery.

junkie2100's tool will root/install clockwork mod recovery. You dont want to do any of this yet. Just get it updated first.

I say dont root and custom recovery because i am not 100% that clockwork mod recovery works on the PM n861 yet.
