Root [Virgin Mobile] [TUTORIAL] CM10.1 on VM GS3

okay awesome! I wish that would work for 10.1 though because I'm sure that 10.2 still isn't stable?

Everything seems okay on 10.2. Ive only had my phone freeze up and restart on me once while i was testing out the camera.

I think im going flash back to midnightrom though. It seems like my signal has gotten worse since i flashed this rom. I used to get anywhere from two to four bars while sitting in my room at home, now it doesnt go above one bar. But when I leave my house the signal improves, but it is still not as good as it was before. It seems like a get one bar less than before (i would get full bars at a friends house, now its one bar less)

oh okay I guess I'll wait it out until they release a stable version, and yeah I've heard about the issues with signal on cm roms

Camera, 4g, and MMS all work?

Camera is borked, 4g has never worked on any AOSP rom. Expect the camera issue will be fixed eventually. Mms is only a matter of apns. Outside of camera cm 10.2 is as stable as 10.1, though obviously a stable release will be slightly better than a nightly. In my experience, not by much.

The signal issues are the same across all cm roms. I've seen people get 4g "working" but it usually stops working after a few restarts.

Heads up: camera is working on the latest nightlies. Last thing now is 4g
Note focal doesn't work as of last check. And it does bad things.

Do you have one of the newer factory MG2 phones? If so did you flash he Sprint MD4 bootloader?

Finally made my way over here to AndroidForums. I'd tinkered a bit with getting CM on this GS3 a couple of weeks ago. Got so far as getting it booting/loading but had no Data due to not putting together all the pieces. (Could make voice calls though.)

I pulled the MD7 update from /cache and ripped it apart to see what was in there re: firmware updates and whatnot. Not really interested in using anything but CM 10.1/10.2 :)

The weird "chameleon" stuff really threw me.

Willing to give it another shot now that I'm here and the community is growing.

Tronik,

I have rebuilt many of the ROMs from Sprint XDA. I have a factory MG2 GS3. I have Not flashed any Sprint bootloaders yet.

To that end I have been unable to get any ROM higher than android 4.2.1 to work. I've had a few 4.2.1 Cm based running fine, but no higher. Wonder if 4.2.2 is when the switched to Linux 4.3?

If you have a factory MG2 phone I am interested on how (if you have) got a 4.2.2 android or higher to work. I'm pulling my hair out trying to work it. I have little doubt it's the manufacturer implementation of something to stop it. The idea of flashing Sprint bootloaders on these new MG2's makes me uneasy.

Although the Sprint and Virgin phones are the same model number Virgin changed enough to screw $hit up.

Yes that chameleon is a bit odd. In order to get the TW Sprint KT747 kernel working with LTE on our ROMs I had to force Virgin Mobile ID numbers away from chameleon.

cm-10.2 roms now work due to the mmc ext_csd revision 7 fix being added to cyanogenmod (not sure if the buildbots have the fix yet). I tried manually editing APN's and the build.prop accoording to MopedRyder's files and it connects to LTE but will immediately disconnect and reconnect over and over eventually reverting to 3G.

I tried a CM10.2 install today. Couldn't get past kernel loading (as usual).

My fix is a work in progress. Since I have a newer version GS3 in still unable to boot any CM10.1 and up.

Sredtv -

So my fix downshifts back to 3g? Good info. Does mms work at all?

What version of my fix did you try? Did one work any different to the other?

Could you please link to where I can read about this?

I couldn't find it on XDA yet

If you have an SPH-L710 with a newer mmc revision (also backwards compatible) this kernel should do the trick https://www.dropbox.com/s/n0a1yo14qxwlvrb/boot.img (md5sum b5d9d2f51e005986f4bc1f7c300adb63) its compiled directly from unaltered cyanogenmod 10.2 repo.

Of course the nightly buildbots should have the fixed kernel by midnight.
