The Tablet Tavern

Hello all. I picked up an ASUS Memo Pad HD7 tablet today. and I guess I have a new hangout here :)

I am charging it now then will promptly root it. Specs wise, it isn't bad for being an inexpensive purchase at $149.99

Tell us how it goes once you start using it :D

I am enjoying it a bunch. I have already rooted it, stopped the pesky system update notification (it is on 4.2.1 currently), and have started putting the apps I use on it and then getting rid of the ones I don't use.

It would be an easy choice if I didn't need skype for a part time job :banghead:

Many Android tablets have front facing camera and a built in mic. I know mine does. You could also use Bluetooth headset with it. I can just download the Skype app from the play store.

I'm sorry for being difficult but I really can't make up my mind. The lightweight chrome os is tempting but the functionality is still limited. I wish I could try it out first but they're not being sold here

I do like how I started the winter looking for an AWD turbo car and ended up with an older Miata with a short block that will get a turbo. It drives ok but has a high idle I have to find the vacuum leak. And it needs a new exhaust.

Anyways, anyone have an Xbox?

BT headsets can certainly be used for Skype and the work OK. However, they do use the HeadSet Profile (HSP), which is very limited bandwidth as it was designed for telephony rather than high quality VOIP, i.e. it will sound like a telephone call rather than the high quality that Skype is capable of when used with a wired headset.

Telephony bandwidth is defined as 300Hz to 3.4KHz approximately, which actually means sibilant sounds like Ss and Ts and Zs are effectively cut-off. @Wyndlash you're going to be teaching spoken language to students? - this may not be too desirable. I'm an ESL teacher, and it wouldn't be desirable for my uses. I've heard what BT headsets sound like on Skype, and they do sound exactly like a telephone call.

BTW try listening to music via the headset profile (HSP) rather than the high quality stereo Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP), it sounds dreadful, just like music on hold. And you can't use the high quality audio profile for VOIP, because it's only one way, for listening to music.

There's been lots of conversation on here. Myself, I use a Macbook mostly at home, including Skype. Although it is an older one, and didn't actually cost me anything. :)

I had a macbook once. It was the worst computer I've owned. Then again it was 7 years old.
