Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

Finally, a plea... half of the posts in this thread are off-topic and watering down what was once a great, informative thread. I get that a small community has been built here, but what are the chances one of the mods can make one post some sort of journal post whose contents are links to other posts with actual news in them (where "news" is stuff like folks posting about discussions with their reps or when SS posts information)?

Around and around and around we go. Yes, I will agree with you that we keep returning to the same topics over and over and over again. But that's really just the nature of discussion forums like these, where there are new folks constantly coming aboard (a good thing) who don't read all of our history and instead rehash old topics (not such a good thing). But it is what it is unfortunately.

Regarding your "journal post," suggestion, the first post of this thread already contains almost all relevant Evo information a newcomer needs to know. Bill has done a fantastic job of keeping it up to date. But quite frankly, there really haven't been any new earth shattering revelations within the last 1-2 weeks... just the same information rehashed over and over again.

That being said, if you pay enough attention, you'll see that if you just read the posts of 3 or 4 specific individuals here, that you'll get all of the breaking information that you need. The rest is fluff and can be ignored.

Still, we been a friendly group and I enjoy the camaraderie while we wait.

Thanks, Bek. I wish we had some new news. If we did, it would make all the difference in the world.

There, I put a nice big link to your first post, in my signature. Maybe if we can get some of the other thread regulars to do the same, that'll give it more attention to our future newcomers!

Edit 1: Errr... my sig's not showing up. Odd...

assuming that the EVO's WIFI hotspot option is only an additional $20/month or less, and assuming simultaenous Voice+Data, and assuming fast and reliable service, and maybe also you live in a 4G market, is anyone here considering ditching your broadband ISP and going with this option exclusively for your mobile AND HOME internet connectivity? I get about 3MB/1MB with my cable provider for $20/month with a special but would consider nixing them if the above factors work so I could get the mobility for the same but non-special permanent price.thoughts?

I considered it for a few minutes but in the end realized that I'm not home all the time and that would drive my wife crazy not having internet. And I don't want to walk in the door and immediately dedicate my evo to providing internet for the house. I'll prolly get the hotspot capability but keey me comcast internet.

They've got to be releasing in June.

I know a lot of you have convinced yourselves that the Incredible is somehow way worse than the EVO is despite having virtually identical specs where it counts (my personal exception being the ability to watch HD video / HDMI), but in reality, they're just about the same phone. Point being, no one is going to hold out for nearly four months after a virtually equivalent phone is already out on the market, and obviously Sprint probably doesn't want to lose the techno-buzz that the EVO has generated.

As far as competing with the iPhone... the EVO doesn't, if you're talking about mainstream perception. The iPhone isn't going to be toppled by any one phone because Apple are geniuses when it comes to creating buzz. Local news companies around my neck of the woods have stories on them when they first come out, for god's sake.

It would be a massive gaffe to sit on this phone. Sprint won't do it.

Welcome Clock. I appreciate your comments and I agree with some of your issues, but I also think you're a little critical for a first time poster. For example, you're dinging us for being off topic, but you bring up the Incredible, the iPhone and release dates, but you don't back it up with anything new. So how is that not off-topic? If you have some good information you'd like to share that would make this a better place, then great. I'd love to hear what you have to say. We would especially like something nice and juicy that we can sink our teeth into.

Thanks again. Your signature will only show up once on each page - I believe. I'm pleased you like the first post. :)

That is exactly what I was thinking. I spend $30 per month for 5mb, if I can roll it all in to one service and pay less than I will. The only thing I can see is families or multiple people in one house sharing internet may cause problems and opt for both. Another thing to think about is if you are in to online gaming, who well will the service work...

relax. it's a discussion forum. we have little or no real new news. we really don't have much else to discuss but tangential topics.

I too had thoughts very similar to these......then I had a brain storm!!!

I can add an additional line (@19.99 per month) get 2 EVO's, leaving one at home as an ISP of sorts.....added benefit: if I lose or break my EVO I have another one on 'standby!'

Welcome Clock. I appreciate your comments and I agree with some of your issues, but I also think you're a little critical for a first time poster.

I've been viewing this thread for months. What does my post count have to do with the validity of what I said?

For example, you're dinging us for being off topic, but you bring up the Incredible, the iPhone and release dates, but you don't back it up with anything new.

I'm sorry you personally felt "dinged," Bill. That wasn't the intent.

I was replying to the interesting speculation regarding release dates, something that definitely is on all of our minds. The iPhone's impending release certainly factors into when the EVO will be released as well as the Incredible's existence in the market, hence why I brought them up. There was context.

As far as what I added, I just threw in my opinion. I'm not advocating that no one post anything unless it's news at all, just expressing my belief that this thread is becoming watered down with fluff posts. As I said, it's been an awesome source of information and it's cool to see people as excited as I am about the EVO - the signal to noise ratio just seems to be rising at an unfortunate rate. I meant no offense to anyone.

Wow, first off, let me say congratulations to 90% of posters in this thread!

It appears you all have marketing & programming degrees! Congrats!

And I know quite a few people who mentioned the eVo 4G to me. More and more people are becoming "in tune" with phones these days.

One thing you have to keep in mind is that unlimited still means a cap of about 5GB and I can use that up in just a couple of days. But then again, it all depends on what you do with your internet. For someone like myself, I will never replace my fios. I do a lot of online gaming, watching Hulu, downloading 1+GB files on a regular basis and I have a NAS at home and all my gaming consoles, NAS, network printer are connected to my home network.

Then you'd have to consider always having your phone charged since turning it into a hot spot can deplete the battery extremely quick and make the phone very hot. A mobile hotspot is nice for quick online when wifi isn't readily available, but I don't believe its a good replacement for your home connection, its just not too practicle and we don't know if Sprint will place any cap on 4G and most of the US won't be covered in 4G for a good while.

However, if you just browse the web at home every once in a while, check your emails or some youtube now and then, its a viable option. I'm paying an extra $20 for BES at the moment and getting a 25% off on my entire bill, so even if Sprint does charge an extra $20 for mobile hotspot which I don't believe is a pricey option, I'll obviously be ditching the BES option when I go with the Evo and tack on the hotspot option making my bill the same as now, about $73 with tax. NO ONE can offer me all that except Sprint thats why even though I was planning on ditching Sprint for the iphone this summer, my mind was changed when they announced the Evo. ATT would charge me over $100 a month and won't even include any SMS/MMS or mobile hotspot.

This is the phone I originally was holding out for, then I discovered the EVO.

Maybe it's a "Philly Thing"? LOL That was what I wanted also.

The reason I posted it was because it's OFFICIAL, and because of the DATE. I'm not as up on Sprint's release history as some of the others - not sure how close together Sprint would release 2 devices. . .

Right now, my ONLY concern about the EVO (Android) is the issues that seem to be appearing with both Pandora Radio, and Slacker. I LOVE Slacker on my Curve. My buddy suggested Tunewiki.

Haha... It's easy to sell a phone that sells itself. We'd have much more trouble trying to convince someone to buy a Palm Pixi.

i hope the hotspot feature is 10 bucks extra a month at most. its free on the pre so 20 a month would be very lame. im paying about 65 bucks now on att with a media plan and more minutes and texts than i'll ever use so i'm not looking forward to a 100 a month bill.

I think Billsmed might have meant that as a first time poster, not a noob. I believe post count have nothing to do with knowledge since quantity doesn't mean quality.

As far as going off topic, its very easy to do since there's no news and the phone isn't due for launch for another couple of months, and everything about the phone has been said 10X already. If people don't go OT, there's really nothing new to post here. Its kind of like talking BS with people you're standing in line with while waiting for a midnight launch of a new gadget or thing. You can only beat a dead horse so many times.

I think its only free on the Pre because Verizon is trying to get rid of their inventory of the Pres since they're not selling well. I don't personally think $20 is expensive for mobile hotspot since a dedicated one is $60 a month with a 2 yr contract just to put things in perspective.

Ditto. I always knew about the "Supersonic" but I figured Sprint would've released it Q3/Q4. The summer rumors and finally confirmation sealed the deal for me with the EVO.

@Clock,
I was only being critical because you were, but my no means do I want to make you feel uncomfortable and not welcome. Obviously I did and for that I apologize.

As for the fluff part, what are we to talk about when there isn't anything new? Bek mentioned the first post in this thread and I appreciate it that he did. With so many newcomers everyday this thread has grown exponentially over night. That means there are a lot of posts to wade through to get information and that's why I try to keep that first post updated with the latest good information that we have.

Again, I would like to welcome you to Android Forums. BTW, I sent you a private message earlier this morning.

Bill

Why don't you just get the Mobile hotspot... its probably cheaper. Besides it just depresses me to think that there is an EVO out there not being used.

Um, on the 4G network there is no bandwidth cap.

To clarify, users who currently have 4G via one of the other available 4G devices are NOT subject to the 5GB cap. Only 3G users are subject to the 5GB cap.
