Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

Well I hope that the EVO does not drop on a Sunday. For whatever reason, both of my local Sprint Stores are closed on Sundays. So heres for a Saturday release!

They would likely stay open with this particular phone release. OR have a midnight sale or something..

the 5g cap is only on 3g... 4g is unlimited
o yea i think i just found out why at&t's network is so bad

Nice gave me a chuckle. One thing we might have to watch is whether the phone will automatically switch to 3G if a 4G signal drops, because say you watch alot of movies over Hulu for example (once flash drops of course). You can easily go over that cap just by watching a few movies, and you might not even notice you're actually getting this over 3G because the player is in fullscreen mode next thing you know your paying a 600 dollar phone bill at $50 extra per additional gig of use. OUCH!

Great to know that they were smart enough not to put a cap on 4G usage. But in some of the videos shown in CTIA, a couple of reps were showing off the Evo it only had 3G and they said there are times when it goes back and forth between 3G and 4G and this is in Vegas. Even if I was living in a 4G city, I still would be afraid that during times when it switches back to 3G I would rack up the bandwidth in no time. However, I'm very happy that there is no cap on 4G.

Current WiMax products like the broadband card, also jump between 3G and WiMax, depending on immediate availability. The 5gig cap still does NOT apply, since the base product/service you are using is WiMax.

probably will be Saturday dont see any reason why it wouldnt be the pre was released on a Saturday.. though I am kind of hoping for a Friday release lol

The mobile hotspot plan is $59.99 per month. Additional line = $19.99, 4G addon for mobile hotspot application = $20.00 Total = $39.99. Twenty bucks cheaper than the mobile hotspot plan.

Sorry, I was only thinking about the initial cost of the EVO compared with the Mobile hotspot... You would think that Sprint would come out with wireless routers and at home epuitment if 4g takes off like they hope. But there again it would become the same as cable and internet providers charging additional fees.

i had been waiting for that phone ever since my Tour started to give me problems a month after release and they were already talking about its replacement.

I found this site when I was bored one day, started reading up on the supersonic and haven't wanted anything but an EVO since!

HAHAHA!!

I fried a number of Tours (before the 5.0 OS Release), and finally downgraded to a Curve. Not due for an upgrade till September - but will be calling Sprint when this baby is official to try to get the upgrade date pushed up. Not sure even how many Tours I went through!

No worry. WiMAX isn't going away. Verizon and the LTE camp has to be worried and I don't think they should be feared.

This whole Wimax vs. LTE reminds me of the Blue ray vs. HD-DVD from a couple years ago.

And look how that one turned out. Problem being Blue-ray and HD-DVD were out basically the same time....where as WiMax is going to have a huge jump on LTE network wise.

By the time full LTE networks are ready to roll out....WiMax could already be strong and stable in multiple markets.

They do! Look up the Sprint Overdrive. Or, if you buy through Clear (Sprint majority owner) you can do just that. I have a Wimax modem sitting on my desk like a DSL modem without the phone cable. I attach that to my home Wifi router and pay something like $25-35/month for unlimited Wimax. I got it because it's cheaper than cable and still fast enough for streaming movies or downloading files.

I’ve seen this sentiment a few times on several different forums. Do people not consider 4G a big deal? What about the hotspot option? I would think those would be two major features that would make the EVO much more desirable than the Incredible.

4G is a big deal but despite the population density of cities, there is a huge suburban/rural population who won't be seeing it for a while. Hotspot is cool but people have been tethering for years and it's remained a niche audience of geeks and work travelers. John Q. Public is typically fine with finding a Starbucks or using the hotel Wifi when not at home or work. It's a great feature but not necessarily one people will use.

For a lot of people this will come down to bigger screen and cheaper plans (and maybe front camera if it's useful over 3G). For me, the 4G is also a selling point since I have it in my city already. The tethering not so much since I would rather just install a tether app and not pay monthly for something I use once every few months.

Exactly. You have to read the articles and you can tell which ones are written with obvious bias. The earliest you're gonna have a market lit up with LTE, is early 2011. At that time Sprint will have 127+ markets up and running with WiMAX. One of our insiders has already stated that WiMAX is being highly sought after in the corporate and government sectors so that should tell you that Sprint made the right decision here. Sprint/Clear only purchased LTE bandwidth and licensing to cover their asses in case things didn't work out. Essentially hedging their bet against failure. It's a prudent move given their current situation where a loss due to a bad business move would be devastating.

With this scenario WiMAX could up on the Blue-Ray side. Don't forget, WiMAX has the spectrum that LTE lacks. You would never be able to tether 8 devices to a LTE phone.

Yup, Sprint is going to get a lot of their customers back while Verizon and AT&T will both be losing customers.

I hope so.

I remember the format wars. From what I remember HD DVD were cheaper to produce with the same quality viewing experience. I still have the HD player for my 360.

I use a tether app on my jailbroken iPhone 3G. Do you have to root in order to use a tether app in Android?

Dunno, I have only experience with PalmOS, Windows Mobile, and WebOS when it comes to tethering. Someone else can weigh in on this but I know programs like PDANet exist for Android and do not require root access. There are probably some methods that do require root access.

There are apps that provide tethering Android phones, but that won't be necessary with the EVO 4G. You will be able to tether 8 WiFi devices including phones, cameras, printers, laptops, etc. without doing anything extra.

If it really does cost $10+ extra per month then that is most definitely something extra. I don't want to pay a monthly fee for a feature I use only 5 or 6 times a year.

The EVO's tethering will be done via an app.
Maybe so, but that app is an integral part of the phone. I saw a video where they were just going into "Router Settings" or something like that.

From the way I understand it, you will be able to tether without the extra charge, but there's a limit of 5 GB, I believe.

I hope so.

Yea it was the cheaper to produce...but once the big producers and studios decided to use Blu-Ray as the standard, it made HD-DVD nonexistant.

Hopefully, with the EVO's help, and perhaps a couple more 4G phones by the end of the year....WiMax will be able to entice some big companies as using them for a standard.

Having the jump in the 4G Network, is going to be a huge selling point.

Also, since WiMax is considered to be LTE(Software update) compatible, Sprint is not that much at a loss. But if WiMax does become the standard somehow....AT&T and Verizon will be screwed.

And to keep this on-topic....think of how much buzz the EVO and 4G is going to generate with Sprint helping host a party for Jerry Bruckheimer?? Man has put out plenty award winning movies and has huge connections with Paramount, Disney and WB.

Has anyone else been able to input their email address on that Best Buy site that was posted awhile back? Something that supposedly BB just put on their site today, allowing you to sign up for availability notifications through them as well. Every link I've followed from here doesn't load the supposed email entry box...just asking.

Also want to throw this out there, as someone mentioned it earlier and they hit the nail on the head for me. I am not located in or near a 4G city, and will not be utilizing the Evo for the mobile hotspot. However, Sprint offers the most cost efficient rate plans, provides good coverage in my home/surrounding areas, and now that they are releasing a phone that rivals what we've only hoped for...I'm sold on SPRINT, period.

So although 4G and Mobile Hotspot might be huge selling points for some people, I don't think they are a main focus for all of the potential customer base. IMO
