Is Facebook Evil?

Just another in the line of apps I don't use...

Facebook continually asks me to put in more information, saying my profile is only 40% complete. I happily ignore it.

I'm waiting for the pestering to start. East of the Sun and West of the Moon is a geographically valid place at certain times. They won't take that for city.
S***H*** high school is apparently verboten, too. I signed up before they started the junk about real names. See how long that lasts. Did the same for Google, Yahoo, Twitter and every fora I belong to. Any mail goes to a throwaway addy on Yahoo mail. I usually JHD everything.

"What's on your mind"
Nothing.

Answer to any survey:
"None of your business."

I just click on kid's pic and look at her moggies since she seems to have forgotten about Dropbox. She posted over 300 pics of a zoo near London.
Guess she's enjoying the SX30 Canon I gave her.

That is another post:
"Moggie vids in Dropbox, go get them."

Yahoo pesters for my profile. They aren't getting it, nor a phone number.

I am actually the same way...

I too have a Yahoo e-mail where all of my junk mail goes.

Also, I have do have a G+ account, but I do not have any personally identifiable information on it. The only personal picture on it is my Google Mail avatar. I only use my G+ account to share news articles with my friends.

Also, when I am out with friends or at parties, I generally do not let people take my picture, because I do not want to have my picture posted to Facebook.

It is also opt-out so you need to check, or lie that you don't have one.

The NBC article says it's opt in:

It may sound like a potential privacy nightmare, but don't worry, you have to opt in.

I believe you have to link the two accounts yourself, they don't automatically become linked. But if you do link them you can then opt out of sharing your Amazon purchases.

I have no intention of linking any site with any other. I was half asleep this am, and you can get really distracted with an antsy Siamese cat in your lap.

What don't they steal from you these days?

Best these days to just have an extra gadget like an iPad and iPod touch with nothing on it period except for apps. No contacts,no emails,no anything which leaves them with nothing to target or get.

I think the word is amoral.. not evil, not malicious... but they don't really care if you are treated good or bad. Your purpose is to help them generate revenue.

all these words you just mention, is Facebook description... any business goal is to generate revenue ;)

Way too inconvenient, and defeatist. Far better to assume control and take a few minutes to configure your devices(s) to do what you want. :)

Not everyone knows how to do this. You probably have a special talent for this :) :thumb:

What is the best way to configure this in our favor

I [...] have been accused of missing the whole point of having a smart phone.

If it works for you who cares what anyone else thinks? Everyone has different needs/wants... there's no "one size fits all" solution.

Nope, I just make sure that any app is doing things the way I want it to, rather than blindly accepting the default settings. Same with Google, Facebook et al.... I use their services on my terms, and choose what I share and with whom.

I did and do and have been accused of missing the whole point of having a smart phone.

The word "smart" being the operative word.

Camera & video recorder, internet, maps compass & GPS, music & video player, organizer & calendar etc etc etc.... facebook isn't a function

Is facebook evil? Yes, they bully gullible and/or vulnerable people (mostly children) by peer pressure into giving up their personal lives to them. We already own so many methods of communication & it's sickening & embarrassing to see these people being zuckered . Especially those who sit in the same class room or office with each other, but only communicate by facebook. These people have become zombies & it's worrying.

Camera and video are good. I don't need the rest. I don't bother with music unless I'm driving. I have a USB port in the player and have ripped songs I like. Internet only for looking up something, including baseball scores. GPS - weather and astronomy only. Maps, location unnecessary removed via rooting. I prefer a map from Mapquest that I can look at and memorize rather than listen to stupid AI or take my eyes off the road to check. Other stuff done the same way I did on the Sony Clie. I don't need a compass. I can usually figure out where North is without one.
Movies bore me. I'd rather have the book. I can read faster than most can talk. Any business, like banking, I prefer to use Linux on the desktop.

The apps I bought are excellent, and are why I bought the phone. I must have 6 astronomy apps, 10 nature ones, etc. I find them very handy. Most have to be able to be used without data. Some places where there is a good dark sky, you have no connection for even voice with TMO. (There's one thing to be said for the old flip phones. The Vulcan can get a signal and voice on the old Nokia 6085, and my Nexus 4 shows nothing even if I tell it to use 2G only)

I do have a FB account to check on kid's moggies and weezes. If they ask "what's on your mind" the answer is "nothing" I "like" nothing. Not worth my time to bother. I didn't sign up with my right name and used a spam collector addy from Yahoo. I will also tell her to check Dropbox for vids and pics of my moggies. I won't post them.
BTW, just checking her page, I haven't seen any ads. I simply don't want to be found by my old high school and "friends" left behind and forgotten.

Other people however may well need, or at least desire, them. So disabling almost every function of the device isn't really an option. Remember what I said above about there being no one-size-fits-all solution? ;)

The topic is Facebook so let's concentrate on that and not get sidetracked by unrelated issues. There are plenty of other topics available to discuss wider issues.

I simply don't want to be found by my old high school and "friends" left behind and forgotten.

The only "finding" they can do is of your profile, and then maybe send a 'friend request'. That's it.... and if you ignore that you'll never hear from them. People can only find out what you willingly share.

I don't share personal stuff. Nobody's business but my own. I resent public pressure to do so. So no profile or a made up one all over. Any "friend" request except kid is automatically deleted or ignored. I'm tired of hearing "everyone does it"

The social pressure to be like everyone else is evil.

I feel the same way!

As I have mentioned, I do not have and will not have a Facebook account.

I do, however, have q G+ account, and I have nothing personal on it. I only use the account to share articles and thoughts.

As you mentioned, I refuse to share any personal information. I have actually had friends ask me why I have not posted my vacation pictures to my G+ account, or other personal pictures. I simply tell them that I do not wish to share my personal information and pictures with the world.
Like you, when friends ask to see vacation pictures or such, I send them the link to the proper folder on my Google Drive account.

As you stated, I too refuse to be pressured into sharing my personal information, just because everyone else is doing it.
