Calling All Grammar Nazi's

I also have a team mate that constantly writes dates like this: July 4'th  and constantly uses a semi-colon instead of a colon (no, not the internal organ, silly!) :banghead:.

"They're gonna have to replace her colon with a semicolon."

Seems legit...

The correct plural form of galaxy is galaxies. So what about if it's a proper noun or a trademark, as in Samsung Galaxy. Is that Samsung Galaxys or Samsung Galaxies?

I would personally write it as Samsung Galaxy's.

I'm not a grammar nazi, but it does annoy me anytime someone uses the word irregardless. Just...no.

Oh, don't forget those who do not capitalize at all, or do not use spaces after punctuation. Two spaces after the end of sentences people.

Are we still using typewriters? pretty odd peeve in the age of the computer... It's really no longer necessary.

Disagree.

It's not supported without calisthenics on a web page and Microsoft Word decided it wasn't necessary.

Nonetheless, I find the lack of two spaces nearly infuriating and indicative of a serious malfunction.

'I broke my finger today but on the other hand I am completely fine.'
The importance of a comma.

I, personally, prefer double spaces after the end of a sentence. Open Office has no issue with that.

I use 2 spaces after a period to end a sentence. After a period that does not end a sentence, such as an abbreviation, I use only one space. It bothers me when I type the 2 spaces and then the system, website or whatever changes it to one space.

This web site just removed on of the two spaces I put after my periods to end a sentence. Does anyone know how to force the second space to appear?

One of our anti-spam measures is to disallow embedded html code.

There's no other way to do it on any website other than explicit meta codes - html interpretation parses multiple spaces and most whitespace as a single space.

You can try using NOPARSE tags.

Let's try it.

Here is one. Here's two.

I would personally write it as Samsung Galaxy's.

The apostrophe would render it possessive or a contraction.
"My Samsung Galaxy's screen is so dirty I can barely read it."
"The Samsung Galaxy's a real POS, y'know?"
A proper noun takes a simple addition of the letter "s" to form a plural ... doesn't it?

That used to bother me, many years ago. My research dug up this explanation:
The habit of using two spaces comes from a time when most typewriters used monospaced fonts, which were easier to read with two spaces at the end of a sentence. Nowadays, most fonts on computers are proportional and the extra space doesn

Well SueDNim, if indeed that is your real name, I think that the whole explanation about proportional and monospaced fonts and typewriters is an opinion.

I owned electric typewriters with proportional fonts.

Two spaces still looks better to me. :)

In fact, we were taught in cursive handwriting class to double the space after a period, compared to what we used for a comma.

That was a continuation of what I learned when I could only print block letters.

I always double after a period too!!! That's the way it sposed to be...but my kids tellme I'm wrong and their teachers don't like it that way....I blame mediocracy and laziness....no really I do!!!
I also always indent 5 spaces for a new paragraph...which apparently is also becoming faux pas...

laziness, like using "sposed" rather than "supposed" ?;)

by the way, it's "mediocrity"

Guy pulls over and asks a man, “Hey, can you tell me where Dartmouth is at?”

Man replies, “Young man, don’t ever end a sentence with a preposition.”

Guys says, “Okay. Can you tell me where Dartmouth is at, you a**hole?”

This has probably been pointed out somewhere in the 30 odd pages but the title of this thread is a grammar foul... Nazi has a posessive apostrophe s on the end.... Should be "Calling all gramma Nazis"

Burnnn on you OP! Hah

Mediocracy is correct - the institution that perpetuates mediocrity.

Bonus on the gramma, well done!

My gramma wasn't a National Socialist, however she did make excellent cinnamon doughnuts.

Was your gramma a socialist?
