Sprint Nextel posted a wider quarterly loss on Wednesday as it took a hefty tax-related charge and valuable customers continued to flee, and its shares fell nearly 5 percent.

Sprint said it had lost 578,000 postpaid customers who pay monthly bills and commit to long-term contracts, slightly better than the average expectation for 623,574 losses from six analysts contacted by Reuters.

Could be as a data completely service/app...? Depends on signal strength/speed though, so probably not practical... Just thinking out loud... Any other input is welcome...

It would almost certainly be a data-only app, otherwise the program would have to somehow synchronize "cellular" voice over data (hopefully that makes sense). The usefulness of the application would also be limited solely to those in 4G markets, feeding off of a 4G signal, as well. I doubt they would opt for such a cumbersome and limiting solution for such an obvious application to use with a phone that has a front-facing camera.

Besides, it's ridiculously simple to write a webcam application. That's all that this video chat would be.

One of the things that I'm hoping to learn about is what sort of, if any, applications EVO will be packing that takes advantage of that particular piece of hardware.

2timberwolves is a woman on here, in the background just reading and lurking for new interesting information.
Thanks, 2timberwolvers. It's hard to tell gender based on a user name. Whether you're a male or female probably doesn't matter much, but it's curiosity more than anything. At first, people were referring to Kretzell as a man, but then she set the record straight. I will say, the one that surprised me the most was RiverOfIce. Someone called her Dad, and she responded, with Mom would be more like it. BTW, I love her comments on WiMAX and LTE, because she makes the point better than anyone else around here. Just last night, I combined some of her posts to make a statement about the WiMAX/LTE issue and you can find that in the WiMAX thread.

It looks like Apple is having its WWDC June 7th meaning the new iphone will officially be shown that day.

Anyone think this will force Sprint to push up the supposed released date from June 6th/13th to that other rumored May 22nd date. I know the last thing Sprint/HTC is to go head to head with Apple during an announcement

I'm pretty surprised by this. I had it pegged for June 22nd.

The Evo's window of opportunity continues to shrink.

I doubt .mkv support, given the somewhat illicit nature of MKV files. I know the format is not illegal, but big companies can be scared of embracing the file format of choice of movie rippers.

mkv isnt a codec... all an mkv is is a container that holds multiple files like subtitle audio and video all in one place instead of having the sub seperate. its basically divx's version of avi

Hello Streaks and welcome to the forum. I don't think anyone here would mind if the EVO were to come out early, but we should have the exact date two weeks from today.

The pre last year was released on June 6th, maybe the EVO will come out the same day. Here is to hoping! As of May 1st I'll have 2 lines eligible for upgrades so all ready for EVO release day, can't come soon enough :D

I would think that forces Sprint's hand. You don't want your device coming out a week after Apple announces the newest greatest iPhone.

Hmm thinking bout it, May 12th is the supposed annoucement day....could we possibly see the FCC approval that Friday? That leaves them a nice window before the end of the month and first week of June.

And I would expect the Pre-order from Best Buy to start before the end of May.

Another note, im not too worried about Sprints Q1 losses. Looking at it, they didnt have much in terms of keeping what Customers who had contracts expiring. Especially at during that period with limited phones compared to Verizon. Im sure Verizon got alot of Sprint customers, who wanted to upgrade to a smartphone because of the Droid.

Hopefully the EVO is whats going to bring these customers back.

With Verizon having bad number this I kind of expected sprint to have better number then this. I guess people might be waiting til the EVO comes out. I know sprint needs something, but I really like the direction Heese is taking Sprint. I believe that he can still turn this thing around.

Sprint will get better numbers.

There was a report in this thread not too long ago about Verizon sliding as well. I'm not too concerned with what was said about Sprint's Q1 losses. Once the EVO releases, Verizon and AT&T customers are going to be flocking to Sprint. The way I see it, they're going to be getting a lot of their customers back.

I noticed the Apple event too from one of the other sites. Here is to hoping it pushes the Evo out a little sooner. At this point, I would imagine with under 2 months until the alleged release of the phone, firmware has to be going on to the hardware at some point in the not too distant future. (I have no idea how long it would take to produce and flash the firmware for how ever many phones they are planning on producing). Maybe start an early release to consumers. If they are out of stock, that could do one of 2 things. 1. Discourage people from buying the phone because of our need for instant gratification. or 2. Encourage people as to the sheer awesomeness of this phone and create a marketing buzz "The evo is so awesome, we sold out all of our available supply in 24 hrs. Just wait until it is back in stock and you too can have the hottest phone today"

Just remember folks that the media will probably get their Evos 2 weeks prior to the real launch date for them to review, similar to the Incredible. So the Evo should still get its share of coverage, but now that timeframe is maybe a week instead of 3 or 4.

One thing you have to think about.....what percent of the Nation now has a cell phone? Its 2010, I cant imagine that Sprint/AT&T/Verizon still believe they can bring in huge numbers in terms of customers....aside from the next growing generation.

Verizon's numbers are proof of that.....seems more like now consumers are just flip flopping between carriers depending on when their contracts end.

AT&T only holds a strong market because of the iPhone, infact I cant even think of why a consumer would want AT&T besides wanting a GSM phone(Which most have no knowledge of) or wanting an iPhone.

If AT&T loses exclusiveness of the iPhone, to either a Verizon iPhone or a Sprint 4G iPhone....and WiMax hits it big w/ simultaneous voice+data....AT&T will be SCREWED. This is really Sprints year to make it or break it, the EVO should be the homerun hit.

Well, one thing to keep in mind is that (and correct me if I'm wrong here) when Apple announces a new phone, it doesn't actually hit the market for weeks afterward. Now, if Sprint is to announce all of the info for the Evo in May and release in June as we believe, then you basically just have that one week overlap between the time that Apple ANNOUNCES the next iPhone and Sprint RELEASES the Evo.

What I'm driving at is that the iPhone won't be available as an impulse buy when they announce, so perhaps it's not an issue for Sprint. Obviously they know how big the iPhone is in the marketplace, but I also don't think they cower in fear and make sure that they're not doing anything while Apple is.

All of that said, I'm sure Sprint would like to release before Apple's announcement, but at this point we're only a month and change out. I question how elastic a national release plan can be at this point. Hope springs eternal!

Okay folks, the time has come, it finally happened. I have erred and sin.

Upon reviewing my notes and re-reading the guidelines myself, it seems I may have gone a bit over the top in not allowing posts with curse words (at least certain curse words), mainly because I mis-understood the guideline as such.

Strong Language: Language is fine to a common sense degree. Say what you gotta say, how ya gotta say it, when it's in a positive or neutral tone. If someone expresses offense to terms you're using, please respect them enough to at the very least NOT respond with

What if Apple thinks the EVO 4G will be released on June 6th? The WWDC on June 7th would grab all the headlines and the EVO 4G will hardly be noticed by the public. In a way, the announcement of WWDC could force Sprint to release early, ahead of all the apple noise.

The only issue I can think of personally is from a marketing stand point. Traditionally, Apple has done a remarkable job of marketing and Sprint has been, well, not as spectacular. That being said, all of the Apple devotees will be screaming from the rooftops to sway everyone towards the latest greatest incarnation of the iphone.
I believe that Sprint needs to take a proactive approach rather then reacting to Apple. If things are ready to go on all fronts (i.e. hardware, software, marketing, ample stock to do an initial release, etc.), Sprint needs to show that they are not taking these steps BECAUSE of VZW or Apple, but rather they are taking them IN SPITE of what these twoo companies are doing.
Ok, back to work. LOL

Once the iPhone is unveiled though, people will definitely think "Oh, the Evo? I'll just wait for the next iPhone in a few weeks". Whereas if there was that uncertainty people would be more inclined to get an Evo rather than wait. Gadgets like cell phones are usually impulse buys for many people - I have an iPod Touch that can attest to that :D I wonder how many are "settling" for an Incredible because they can get it now while the Evo is dateless and priceless (in not a good way).

Now, maybe it won't be a very significant number, but even if its 5,000 nationwide that can mean a lot.

I could tell you one thing. Apple purposely chosen the 7th for their conference. With Sprint's NYC/LA event, they need to find ways to "plug in" the EVO 4G. NYC is already primed for WiMax, and work already started in L.A., though I don't know how far along the work is yet. I say activate both, and have two major markets primed for 4G.

Having said that, LA event has nothing to do with the EVO. It's a film event, though the device will be shown here and there. No breaking news happening in this event. NYC is more of a EVO/Disney event, though I don't think you'll learn anything major. My invite already came through, so anything I learn from there, you guys will know (though I already know almost all that needs to know. Incredible release date and pricing was announced 2 weeks before launch, and this might be the same with the EVO. Marketing started weeks ago, so all they need now is TV coverage showing off some features that the phone will do best. Imagine setting up the EVO in your car. Your wife streaming Pandora in the front, and your two kids watching Monster vs Aliens in the back from their laptops. Dad seems lost so he decides to use Sprint Navigation, but his boss from back home decides to video call him. Wife and kids still doing what they are doing, regardless of the video call. That's the power of the EVO 4G with WiMax. Show this in a commercial, and watch the buzz explode.

I know when I was browsing engadget while the iPad was being released, I had to use Engadget '/exclude/Apple' just so I could FIND the interesting stories without being overwhelmed by crap I didn't care about... It'll probably be the same when WWDC hits:mad:

Apple WWDC 2010 starts June 7th in San Francisco | The Toybox | ZDNet.com

Considering that is June 7th......Sprint needs to get the EVO out on or before the 6th. Depending on what Apple might say, June 13th might not be good enough to pull away some of the hesitant Iphone consumers.
It also might not be good enough to keep customers from leaving. I think Sprint should do a soft or limited launch right now or ASAP! Maybe just in 4G areas, get the phone into customers hands and this will build an enormous buzz! I am no marketing genius but I did have my own business and word of mouth is the best form of advertisement. :)
