Also, concerning waiting your 1-2 years.... I understand "Lessit" but disagree with it. I would rather pay to have the technology and use it NOW than to wait and use it later. That argument gets little enjoyment as there will always be something new, better, different. If it works for you.... GREAT!. But if you are like me.... Want things to work, like gadgets, have a little extra $$$ to part with and know that HTC can do better than the Eris... you are buying. Incidently, I have five lines on our Verizon plan. One is alwasy up for an upgrade... So in reality it only cost me about 230 of which I can easily sell the droid and Eris and make a goos some of cash after paying for the Incredible.

Good luck boys. Hope the update hits this year. If not this year, I don't think it will EVER come out.

OK, this isnt gonna make people happy here but here goes. With all the problems i was having with my Eris, verizon had me to a hard reset. So did that and called them back after youtube app still wouldnt work, google map crashes and other normal problems with the phone. Asked about updates and was informed by verizon tech rep lvl 2(after speaking to manager) that there is NO update for the Eris to fix the known problems with the phone in the forseable future...when i asked what time fram that was, he informed me that nothing under 6 months was comming out.....When i asked them why they would wait this long to fix problems known to be wrong, they told me that when the release of the Trial update, it caused more problems then it fixed therefore they were told that it has to be re-written and then tested again before it can be released..i asked them why they are still selling the eris on verizon wireless with some of the main selling points being Google maps app and youtube app(listed as major apps for the eris on verizon wireless first paragraph describing the phone) when they know that the apps dont work or crash....he couldnt give an answer and told me that i will just have to deal with the problems until the update comes out later this year.....im completly dumbfounded with this. out of the top 5 reasons i picked this phone 2 of them dont work...and the whole phone randomly shutting off and restarting is driving me insane.

I've been reading items about this particular topic for awhile now and I guess I don't understand the frustration with not having an OTA official release of 2.1, 2.2, 3.0, or 10.12 anytime soon.

Perhaps it's because I work in the software industry, but I'm totally cool with making my own decision to either a) stay with the tested, stable release (i.e. 1.5) or b) move up to v2.1 using a leak.

While I think it would be nice to have a semi-private or public beta program for the new versions of Android on these devices, it sounds like the root cause of these problems has to do with a) Verizon's need to have micro-management-like control of devices on their network and b) too many fingers in the pie (meaning HTC, Google, and Verizon). If you're doing a public beta, just make sure there is a way to return to the previous version (i.e. go back to Windows XP when testing Windows 7).

Perhaps if the Eris and other HTC devices just used the base Android system without Sense, we would all be happier users?

I'm not sure if I added any value to this conversation, just wanted to add my two cents :)

U dont understand the frustration? perhaps you like using a phone that has half of the main features non functioning, but i dont. I paid $200 for this phone with the understanding it will work with all the Pre-installed apps. The fact that they do not work at all, crash and make my phone run like crap unless i use a program to kill the app, kinda makes me upset

I don't think I have any main features non-functioning.... which features aren't working?

FYI here is Dale Knights phone number. He is an Executive in Verizon Wireless executive office. Call 866-673-9561, you will get a receptionist and ask for dale. He helped me work out a problem with my old Samsung Omnia where i had my old phone break and was told by VZW rep that my phone was no longer available(3 months after i bought it) and had to buy a new one at full price and then they changed my contract dates. If anyone is unhappy with there eris and like me is not able to upgrade right now, contact him and see what he can do for you. Verizon tells me i cannot return my phone and get a new one since im past my 30days, when they told me to just wait as the update was comming in at the end of march and that all the problems would be fixed. I am not waiting 3-6 months to get a full functioning phone. I have been a customer of verizon for over 5 years and pay over $200+ a month plus have spent nearly $3k in phones in those 5 years. If they do not fix this i will move to AT&T. Simple i am done with the run arounds that verizon is givng me, when i just callled they told me the only thing they can do is let me buy a refurbished phone for $300.......

device powering down and resetting while sitting with full battery, phone resetting while on a call, youtube app non functioning, google map crash. Keyboard on phone randomly switching to numbers while in the middle of typing, phone dropping calls in full service area with full signal...thats just a few i have had with my original eris and replacment eris.

These "leaks" are doing exactly what they were intended to do, keep you running in circles with buggy code till you get so fed up you just toss the Eris and get the Incredible. May will be an interesting month in Android world.

Who is this guy and why is he in the Eris forum, it's been a lame attempt at a smack-down from his first post...I thought you guys were cleaning this forum up.

I thought you guys might be interested in this email reply I received this evening:

Dear ----,

Thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless via our website, my name is Steven. I understand the need to be able to ensure that your mobile device will work for you when you need it to do so. I will be happy to assist you with the software available for the HTC Eris. I regret that we have not been able to respond to your concern within our standard time frame. I appreciate your patience and understanding.

In review of your account, I was able to see that you upgraded to the HTC Eris on 04/26/2010. I am sorry that you were misinformed regarding the software version that this mobile device would be able to support. Currently the most advanced software version supported by this mobile handset is 1.17.

You are correct that there was a scheduled update to the software that was to take place during the first quarter of 2010. This did not occur due to compatibility issues with the mobile handset and the 2.1 software version. As a result this has not yet been completed. I apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused you.

Verizon Wireless does continue to support older models of handset even as new devices are brought to the market. I regret though at this time, I am unable to provide you with when the software upgrade for the Droid Eris will become available.

Please note that you may return your wireless device, for any reason, within 30 days of purchase for an exchange for the device to another of your choosing. Please be aware you will be charged a non-refundable $35.00 Restocking Fee since the device cannot be resold as new.

Please ensure you return the original box, including the UPC Code, intact with all components (phone, charger, battery, instructions, etc.). All components must be in like-new condition. All returns must be accompanied by the original receipt and will only be granted to the actual purchaser whose name appears on the receipt.

At our discretion, we may decline your return or charge you an additional fee for missing items or items that we determine are damaged or require service. If we accept your return within this period, we will refund your purchase price. The credit for your equipment return may take up to three billing cycles to process.

If you purchased your device through:

• Our Online Store, please call 877-483-3010
• Telesales Department, please call 800-256-4646
• A Verizon Wireless retail store, please contact the store or your sales representative for more information.
• Another retail location such as Best Buy, that retailer's return policy will apply.

***Important***
A prepaid return-shipping label was included with your shipment. Please retain the 12-digit FedEx return tracking number assigned to you as this information is required if we need to verify the status of your return.

I took the liberty of further reviewing your account services. I was able to determine, that based on your current usage, you are on the best plan and features for your wireless communication needs.

I make it my personal goal to resolve all of your wireless concerns. I hope I have done that for you today by providing you with an explanation of why the Eris does not yet support the new Android software. I was able to explain your options to be able to return or exchange the mobile handset for a different model. We appreciate your business and thank you for choosing Verizon Wireless.

Sincerely,

Steven

Perhaps if the Eris and other HTC devices just used the base Android system without Sense, we would all be happier users?

Finally someone who knows what they are talking about. The update would be out by now if it wasn't for the HTC sense. Don't get me wrong, I love it but it is causing so many problems.

I've wondered why HTC doesn't just re-develop Sense UI to run to with Android 2.1 instead of having to practically force 2.1 to run with Sense??

All other "Home replacement" UI's are developed to work with 2.1... why not Sense?

What other UIs are out there? Just BLUR and Sense.

I just bought an ERIS via Verizon because the rep told me it would be getting the 2.1 and so did all the searching I did on it. When I inquired yesterday to the Verizon techie online about ETA, I was informed that there would be no Verizon update for 2.1 for the HTC Eris. Just the Motorola Droid. If that's the case, I'll be returning this phone. But who to believe?
I like the phone just not as good as the moto droid and if you can wait till the 29th to take it back i would get the incredible same price as moto droid but with a snapdragon processor and amoled screen with tv out and im sure as soon as they root the phone there will be a lot of cool things to do

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Sense just a Home replacement UI (app)that is preloaded onto the phone?

It's a lot more than that. Sense is a custom build of Android that also replaces many of the stock Android apps. Just as an example, on 1.5 they had a browser with multi-touch, a different contacts app, a different photo album app, etc.

Then I stand corrected. ;)

couple of things.

1. You giving him a +1 for calling people idiots is idiotic.

2. Why are Incredible upgraders idiots? I mean, if the contract is up, its the best phone Verizon has. Yeah, he can wait a year... and a year after that, he's in the same boat as everyone else. And we are the idiots?

If you are talking about people paying retail, again.. if people have the money, they can spend it as they wish.

The Eris is a piece of junk. The Motorola is great but big. The Incredible is going to set the new standard.

And next year? Yeah, I may pay 500 for a newer one. What's it to ya?
