S5 fails to excite

8GB ROM!, what the hell are they putting in there? :confused: Think the ROM on my Galaxy Win is only around 1.6Gb. My desktop Linux Mint is only 5GB, with everything I need installed. So if you got the 16GB version, 32GB is likely to have quite a premium, install a couple of Gameloft games, think it's all going to be gone.

AC's headline is a bit misleading : that's 5.3 GB system plus 2.3 GB "other files" (bundled media?). The real headline is "less than 8 GB available out of the box".

But the system partition on my HTC One is 1.78 GB, and the ROM is just over 1 GB, so the S5 has a very large ROM however you cut it. And to think that a year ago I was running a 60MB Gingerbread ROM (admittedly a masterpiece of stripping down to the essentials)!

Being a Firefighter, I like being able to keep in touch with my family while I'm at work for 2 days. Having this extra screen real estate makes browsing the Internet, fb, etc much more satisfying. I can already see this taking the place of my iPad for browsing..

I want the Note 3 also, but I too am worried about the daily use of a phone that big.

I'm a little guy(5'5 and 145lb.), but a friend of mine has the note 3 with the zerolemon and that zero shock case on it. I put it in my pocket and tried to operate it with one hand. It fit okay in my pocket and I was able to manage using it with one hand. Maybe I'm just being too cautions about making the jump.

Verizon has a 14 day return policy. So I think it's worth trying..

Its a big jump. Maybe the galaxy s 5 is for you if you wish to upgrade.
 
What about improvement to move the speaker to the front or bottom?

The heart sensor is the next big thing? Few years ago but it was 3D but only HTC makes it.

I'm not talking about pixels. They talked at length in the S5 announcement about the improvements to the screen, the brightness, the new ability to change color gamut when indoors/outdoors, other screen related improvements. I don't need any more pixels at this size, but I will appreciate the other improvements they mentioned.

The standard version should 32GB now, that premium should get you 64GB.

Users that only need 8GB storage shouldn't really be looking at high end smartphones, they will be better served by cheaper alternatives like the Moto G.

EDIT: Even the cheap copy has 32GB of Storage. :D

I think it should be on a phone of this price level. Flash storage is not exactly expensive these days. The price difference between 16GB and 32GB flash memory might be less than the cost of the heart rate monitor gimmick.

I got the Note 3 and I have to say that the size of the phone was a bit daunting at first but after having it for the last 36 hours it's growing on me.

I have a friend that has the Note 3 and she has smaller hands (obviously because she's a female) but she has said that she has no problems using the phone.

I love the device. It's noticeably quicker and smoother than my older Galaxy S4. It has less lag, better battery life, and I swear that the screen is better. I squint less when reading text on the Note 3 than I did on the S4.

But making a profit is about maximising margins, and pricing is based not on manufacturing cost but what you can get away with (economists have euphemisms for this, but I prefer to tell it like it is).

So if you can set the base price with the 16GB version and charge a premium for the 32GB that's well above the extra cost, it must be tempting.

Where it really hurts is when the networks decide that people will only want the cheapest model.

But yeah, get ready for complaints one month from now when people buy this, install 2 large games and find they are out of space.

As for "that was a pre-release model", yes, the networks haven't got at it yet.. ;)
 
I the S5 is very exciting for the mainstream average consumer. A mainstream device that is waterproof! I think it will be a great selling point. The camera has also improved which is something that is important to the average smartphone owner.

I understand some disappointment over a non-metal body but I hear if you drop a metal phone it will dent. Won't you just cover it up with a case anyway?

Another cool feature is the advanced battery management. I read online that if the S5 is low on power it will tell you how much power will be saved if you turn off certain features.

I'm so excited over the waterproofing and heart rate moniter I wonder how many features this has over the Note 2 other then the S-Pen which I don't use often.

Am I missing something here, how can people get excited over a heart rate monitor? If one is really working out, are you going to keep a largish $700-$800 cellphone on you.

Used it for a few weeks, then the novelty wore off and sold it.
 
I'm thinking more like Galaxy S4.5.

It's almost as if upgrading every two years is almost a waste. Wait three years, then the hardware changes will be enough to make you actually want to upgrade.

Two years is long enough to wait, after two years almost everything is an upgrade.

That would be Galaxy S3 to Galaxy S5 which is a massive upgrade all around, ignoring the increased size.

Galaxy S3 was not a huge improvement over the Galaxy S2 and the display was horrible, it featured retina melting colours. :D
 
If I'm reading it correctly, the S5s heart rate monitor is basically just putting your finger over the camera sensor and turning the flash on. You can then actually see your heart rate using this method.

I've had the same app since the iphone 3GS and now on my S3 that's does this.

Exactly, somehow the light can measure your heart beat. I know this app.

I prefer blood pressure measurement. Some of you can hope for a glucose checker.
