Help my android phone (jelly bean) doesn't go into sleep mode.

i have a new phone ZTE AWE. It works great but it doesn't go into sleep mode. I go into Settings > Display > Sleep, and try different settings but nothing works.

sometimes it sleeps, sometimes it doesn't. it seems somewhat random. I'd say more than half the time the screen will just stay on indefinitely (which kills my battery)

could another app be interfering with my sleep mode?
is this a common problem with jelly bean?
should I look for an app that manages sleep mode independently?
any other ideas?

thanks!

How long do you have the screen timeout set to?

If it's not that, run Wakelock Detector and see what's keeping it awake.

(It's not a JellyBean problem - my phone is almost never awake when I'm not using it for something.)

OK I"m back.... the problem is still happening. Phone/screen often doesn't sleep, mainly when a text message is open.

I have wakelock detector installed but I guess I don't know how to use it. I went to the Screen Wakelock list. there is only one thing there -- Calendar (the basic version that comes on the phone, not the full Google version). I went into the App Info and hit "disable."

the phone still has the problem.

am i missing something? please help!
