Oh, I agree totally. I've said before that iPhone lovers are going to stick with the iPhone and Verizon lovers will stick with the Moto Droid or the Incredible. A lot of people are on the fence, though. Some just want the Incredible because it's available and I have no doubts that of lot of them will want the EVO instead when it goes on sale.

I am sorry, you have completely lost me.

Sprint screwed up big time. Gave everyone and idea of what to beat, 2 months before the release of the phone.

You know Apple up their processor for the release.

Now about the 4g and software. I am a wimax person. But to build a phone in which 90% of the population can not use, is well...stupid.

You can stream to qik using a standard blackberry.

Video chat with the front facing camera can easily be done at 400kbps. Which most 3g networks can do. It would suck up a lot of bandwidth. But is doable.

Wimax is simply not ready to be used as a marketing tool. Maybe this time next year, when it reaches 50% of the population. There still are local build out problems.

Evo is going to be a great camera, but to alot of people, I can understand how it will not change their minds.

Only if they live in a 4g area and want to wait forever for it.

But if you are not going to be on a 4g network in the next year, then I can see getting the incredible.

What am I going to do? Get the Evo. Verizon is not a option for me, and never well.

Before people start saying I am a sprint/wimax hater.

I am just trying to realistic.

The worst thing that can happen now is over get all excited for something that may not work out.

It is coming, and I can wait for it.

4g is a big selling point, but it can utilize 3g as well. It is a 3g/4g phone. So saying 90% of the population is wrong because the EVO will still work in 3g areas, it will just work better in 4g. Just like if you had a 3g/4g broadband card.

I pretty much agree that Sprint was trying to hold off customer loss by announcing this so early. The problem is it gives competitors time to catch up and the hoopla after the first announcement has faded completely....outside of this forum that is.

I think one thing we all have to keep in mind is that those of us on this forum are usually phone nuts, techies, etc. and don't necessarily represent the majority of the carriers customers. I don't know if Joe Blow cares about the larger screen or 4g, etc. He just sees the incredible (or iphone) and decides to go with that because he doesn't understand what the EVO can do for him and probably doesn't care that much.

I'm really hoping Sprint comes through and blows us away with this phone. I just hope they do it sooner rather than later because they are losing customers on a daily basis to the other carriers.

The problem they will face is they probably re-upped their contract and will be locked in and not willing to pay the huge Verizon ETF to go with the EVO.

It's hard to argue with anything you say. I don't know if you saw it or not, but I combined some of your posts in the WiMAX thread because the information you provided was so good. I hope you don't mind that I edited it a little, but we can talk about it, if you do. (PM me, if you want to) I just felt compelled since it contained such important information and was said better than anyone else has said it around here.

I've been lurking here for awhile and now I'm just finally getting around to posting. I just want to say thanks to Bill, Jackson and all the rest of you that keep supplying us with the great information.

Luckily I procrastinated about picking up a Nexus One (sure helped that you couldn't see one in person prior to purchasing). Since I'm currenty with T-Mobile I had also considered the HD2, but had heard all the horror stories with WM 6.5.

Now I have a few questions and a little venting to do.

The questions would be, how do they go about porting your number over? As I'm with T-Mobile now and I don't want to lose service in between, can you discontinue service and have the number ported over the same day?

As for the venting. I had planned on preordering from Best Buy and started looking into it and figured out that Sprint isn't available at Best Buy in my area. It seems crazy to me for it not to be available when we probably have one of the bigger 4G coverage areas around being in the Seattle-Puget Area. Then they have the release date during the work week. Hell, I can't get the time off to even try and make it to a Sprint dealer when they come out and now it's looking like I'll be stuck hoping that they'll have them instock when I get off of work.

It's either that or preorder it 2.5 hours away (Portland, OR) and make a dash down their after work, YEA!

HTC Incredible wasn't scheduled for a Oct-Dec release. I won't even go along with what you're stating. I'm not getting into the whole HTC Dragon rumor either. I'm debating if I should state that I'm a device tester, which is already known, therefore I could be a fan of a phone, you wouldn't know about. I'm thinking if I should ask you when the device started the initial testing, since you're trying to say that this phone had a 4Q release, but wasn't known till when again? 50/50 if I should continue with my point. Sprint didn't drop the ball, because this phone wasn't ready to be released. Period. I've already stated that it's the software that will seperate the EVO from the Incredible. You've listed things that I'm not even talking about, nor will until Sprint officially announces them. Let's be honest here. What would have happened if Sprint didn't announce anything at all at CTIA?

I do agree that marketing means everything. Samsung Galaxy S is terrific in person, but it means nothing compared to the iPhone 3G (S). It's sad, but that's how it is.

I don't know if you followed the link I posted above, but that pretty much describes my reasons for saying what I said. I'm certainly not trying to start a EVO vs. Incredible fight. As far as trading phones, Sprint gives you 30 days when you buy a new phone to decide if you want it or not. I assume Verizon has the same policy, but maybe they don't. I was only thinking the EVO is a superior phone in just about every way and a lot of people are probably going to want their money back from Verizon, if they can get it. By May 29th, we should know a lot more about the EVO and maybe we'll even have it by then.

I pretty sure that won't happen. The Incredible may very well stop people from coming over to Sprint as while the Evo may still be a better device the Incredible will fill the void and they won't move.

Welcome Jimmy. I seriously doubt you'll have any trouble porting your number over. As far as the Best Buy thing goes, I'm really surprised by what you said. I know they're going to be selling the EVO 4G and we have a least one member here that works for Best Buy.
 
Quite honestly, I could care less if the phone gains popularity or not. For me, it's all about what the phone provides to me personally and how it will help me multi-task (business and personal life), as compared to the Touch Pro that I currently have. And I'm not just an "average" consumer that just wants a phone that'll be "easy and fun."

Ultimately, I think the success of the EVO will be detemined once the phone is released, not necessarily based on the "pre-hype." If it exceeds its current expectations, it will be successful and could potentially move the company in an upward direction that many would never anticipate seeing Sprint reach. "Word of mouth" is still a VERY strong marketing gimic and if the EVO reaches the "average" consumer as "the phone to have" because it's "easy and fun," Sprint will officially be "in the game."

Let's say it just meets expectations on an even level, that should still be considered a success for them (as compared to past "flagship" devices), considering all the hype the phone received when it was introduced at CTIA. I don't beleive that this will put Sprint "in the game," but could lead to better things in the near future (as compared to the overall outlook the general public currently has of Sprint).

There are many people out there that don't trust Sprint to begin with, so the worst case scenario is that the EVO doesn't meet expectations (which is the mentality of a lot of non-Sprint customers anyway) and they go back to the drawing board to try and figure out a better way to keep customers and gain new ones. At that point, though, Sprint has bigger problems, from a business standpoint, than the losses they take from an unsuccessful "flagship" phone.

Going back to my original point, I'm just hoping that this phone (at minimum) meets MY expectations and blows my Touch Pro out of the water. If the phone ends up being "all talk" without being able to back it up, I'll just chalk it up to another phone that was "overhyped" until next year when the next "great phone" is introduced. My personal hope is that, I find out within the first 30 days of owning the phone because if it underwhelms me, there's no doubt I'm returning it and keeping my upgrade until the next wave of new phones comes to Sprint.

Specs wise, this phone will win the Pepsi challenge any day vs the competition. However there is one thing a lot of people are overlooking, and I've seen numerous complaints about this on the Incredible forums, that the battery life is going to really be an issue for most users.

For those who want to spend the extra cash and buy the extended battery. Or buy an extra regular battery or w/e. But for the average consumer, they don't want the hastle of switching batteries and carrying around an extra, or having an extended battery make the phone bigger.

Personally, I have no issue. I keep a usb cable at work to charge my phone. One at home. Maybe I'll get one for my car. But for people who don't work around a computer all day might get annoyed that their phone battery only lasts 10 hours with regular usage.

Sure you can turn off features, disable the GPS, dim the backlight, but you're sorta killing the EVO experience..

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I disagree. This is about getting the tech industry's attention. CTIA happens to BE in April. What other event could they make the announcement in? CES in Jan like Palm? Sprint will not lose customers as you say since 99% of customers don't even know about the Evo til they either see it in store or on TV. I hate keep beating a dead horse but tech ners and geeks do not make up their customer base.

the battery issue doesn't seem like it shld be a huge issue to me. i suppose those that want to b able to not charge their phone for several days may b upset, but i've nevr understood the logic in that unless you don't sleep. all my phones have been able to last from the time i wake up until the time i go to sleep, and if i happen to b home in between i just plug it up when it's not in use...so as long as my evo can last a normal day, i'm good
 
or they could of just did it like verizon and just pushed it out without a major show. none of the major electronic sites have it on there front page ne more so what was the point.
people are still talking about the phone but its all people like us not the every day user and thats what sprint needs. because we are tipically alrdy on sprint or just a smartphone user in general. they missed 1 shot. if they dont have it ready way before the iphone release they would of just blown the first 3/4 of the year.

Announcing at CTIA was a great move. It generated a lot of initial buzz.

However, I feel Sprint didn't take advantage of the buzz generated, and has since sort of let it fizzle out. I've only seen a few EVO ads, and only on tech sites and Bestbuy.com on their cell phone page..

Sprint has proven they like to waste money on advertising, and usually poorly done advertising at that. Why not advertise during the NBA playoffs, NHL playoffs, etc. They need to get the word out that Sprint has a device on the horizon that everyone will want.

The talk about this gaining sales, etc.. reminds me a lot of the PS3 vs XBox360 stuff.. PS3 fanboys want to defend and hope sales pick up to match, etc..

Anyway, been on the fence to what I actually think is better for cell phones on sales and hype.. Do you announce like Sprint does (Instinct, Pre, Evo, etc) months in advanced or do you announce and release a couple weeks later??? I personally would like announcement (a couple months earlier) followed by information, promotional videos, trailers, etc.. sort of like they do with the bigger video game releases..
 
So yesterday there was a post on Engadget about the next iphone camera. One line caught my attention:

"The site says that LG has already started producing the "sophisticated cameras" at its plant in Gumi this month, with mass production supposedly set to begin in the second half of this year."

This leads me to believe that the next iphone won't release this summer but probably fall sometime. All the iphone users who's ATT contract will be up this summer (since they bough the 3g two summers ago when it first came out) will be free to switch carriers.

Maybe what is happening now with potential EVO customers going to the Incredible is ok with sprint because they're waiting to have a larger pool of potential customers when they really kick off the ad campaign. The ATT customers may be itching for a new phone and fed up with their crappy service. Sprint's plan may be to woo them over with the EVO.

Besides that, the phone hasn't been announced to the general public yet. That will be May 12th. The release date should also be announced that day.

Everyone is getting antsy, including me, but a lot of our questions should be answered on the 12th and that isn't that far away.

I am assuming that one has to take the phone in for them to do that, or send it to them. Oh heck nooo, i waited this long for the EVO and I am not about to send it away for any work done no matter how nice looking it may be. lol Although it is rather tempting.
