Help Problem with the clock! / Time Keeps Changing Despite Settings

I, too, wanted to reply with my own experiences. I received my Centura on 1/25/2014 (so, about three weeks now). Initially, I went several days with no issues - but then it showed up (a couple of times - set to acquire time thru network). I then turned that feature off and went several days again without problems - so, I figured, "OK, well, setting the time manually isn't the greatest, but I can live with it." (figuring, then, that it might be through the network). But, then I had problems that way, as well. Discovered, when this happened, I could switch on 'network' time and it corrected, then turn it back off again. After a few days of this, I turned 'network' time back on -- and that has been about 10 days ago - no issues over this last 10 days or so.

What prompts my reply here is about 2 days ago I also discovered the 'calendar' issue Kate talks about - again, set to Australian time zone (I'm on EST/EDT in GA). I wondered if this had something to do with it (and this especially since every 'set-back' I've experienced in the clock has *always* been a whole number of hours (minutes seems OK) - which was leading me to believe that it might have something to do with time zones). I've been going now about 3 days with the correct time zone set in 'calendar' - but, as noted, I'd had at least a week (on 'network' time) prior to that where things were OK.

Not sure if my experiences helps anyone (or this issue) - and I would like to ask if anyone out here that has had this problem has had the MINUTES change - as, from what I've heard / seen, it has been a whole number of HOURS?? This might indicate that the time zone is having some bearing on it. I notice in the 'Date & Time' screen in 'Settings' has a time zone and I feel reasonably certain I had that set correctly (now set to 'Automatic time zone').

Note, I do not have the GPS turned on - which would seem to be needed to correlate the 'Automatic time zone' - but I've had GPS off for awhile (2 weeks) as a battery saver.

Just more info - but, as of this post, I've gone approaching 2 weeks with no time issues.

Cool now this forum will have two people we can wait for a reply from to see if it helps. I don't use the Centura anymore but I like the people here in the Centura forums and want ro help in here.

I'm not sure exactly how it gets network time but my IP address is a few time zones over, changing from state to state every once in awhile. Wonder at what point in the network chain it grabs your timezone from?

So I just found this thread. Me and my wife went to Wal Mart a cpl of days ago and bought brand new Samsung Galaxy S4's (For At&t) ... paid the 700 dollars each to buy them. Set them up on Straight talk and they work great cept my wifes phone is having this clock issue. It's not just on cheap phones.

Now that is strange. Which Android version are you running? You may want to check in the S4 forums. I have a StraightTalk Galaxy S3 running on Sprint and I have not experienced the problem at all... but I did with my Centura.

It has been a while since I've posted anything about my phone but it seemed as though everything was working fine, that is, until I was out of town and needed to use the GPS feature. I live in PA which is in the Eastern Time Zone. I drove to WI which is in the Central Time Zone. My car's GPS was not finding the business I needed to locate so I turned on the phone GPS in hopes that I would get more accurate maps. I did get to my destination, thankfully. But I forgot to turn off the phone's GPS when I was finished. The entire date and time issue began again. I found the phone set to Australian Time.

It seems those of us plagued by this time issue will need to be diligent about turning the GPS off and ensuring the apps and calendars all have the correct time zone and date set after using the GPS. Maybe some wiz kid at Samsung will read this forum, then set out to find and fix the glitch. Yeah, I know but we can hope.

Take care everyone.

I have had this problem since I first bought my android centura on black Friday for $29. I use my phone as my alarm clock and have woken up just about late twice for work because of it. It is extremely frustrating! Sometimes it will not happen for weeks and sometimes it will happen a couple times in a day. Today has been a bad day, thus why I have found this forum. No joke, it happened while I was reading the two pages of posts here... all could think is are you kidding me?! In all it has happened 4 times today so far. That is a little ridiculous...
I tried the trick of clicking and unclicking the auto time and date after reading about it here. Well although it does not FIX the problem it's at least better then having to restart my entire phone like I have been doing!
I read an article today about task killers because several of my apps kept crashing. The article was very insightful and convinced me to delete my Task Killer app. One of the big factors was that it talked about how it will sometimes kill your time system on your phone leaving you late for work because your time was wrong. I thought Omg! Perhaps this is why my phone keeps changing 5 hrs! I deleted my task killer and low and behold my time changed again right after. Figures. Task killer must be mad at me for deleting it because it has happened several times after that. And this where I am now.
I couldn't believe after reading this how many people are having this issue!
Someone mentioned that their world clock was on the wrong zone... does the Samsung galaxy centura from straight talk have a world clock?

Has anyone tried calling Samsung support? I ask because I'm curious what their response is, but also because I don't want to call if it will be a waste of my time.

This bug is a major problem for me. I consider the clock/calendar alerts/alarm to be a core function of a smart phone. Or any phone for that matter. I've had mobile phones since about 1994 and have never encountered this and have always used the clock and alarm on my phone as primary functions. I'm dumbfounded how this can go out the door as a product with this flaw.

My wife and I both have the same phone.

I've tried clearing the system cache. The time jumped 5 hours two days after clearing the system cache. I've tried the manual time setting as opposed to automatic update, but that doesn't work. This particular non-fix doesn't make sense to me because shouldn't it act as a clock if it isn't updating? It's obviously updating from somewhere if it changes with this setting set to not update.

I saw on a different thread here on androidforums, someone said to clear all data under 'manage apps' 'settings' 'clear data'. I just now did that, so I'll give an update when/if it doesn't work, or in a couple weeks if it seems to solve the issue.

I've read this thread and will continue to follow it. Any and all potential fixes or attempted fixes, whether successful or not are appreciated.

"Our's keeps trying to put us in Mountain time even though we are securely in Iowa...in the middle of CST/CDT town. WTF? Ditto on the 6-hour difference also."

Lol. I also am in Iowa. ;) it is ALWAYS exactly 6 hours no matter the setting configurations. I have tried everything except factory reset as well. It is driving me crazy as my phone is my alarm clock. I woke up at 3 something this am and saw it was again 6 hours off...set the clock. Triple checked it since i was 1/2 asleep. Whew. Right?? Wrong. Overslept anyway. It went back again!!

Driving me insane!! I love my phone except for this one issue. Please help.

No matter what I did to my Centura... no "fix" lasted over two days. I am surprised that Samsung hasn't addressed and fixed this major bug.

I don't have your guys' device (or have this problem) but still think there might be valuable information to be gleaned from a logcat while / when the device does it's undesired time zone switch (reference post #68 above).

It sounds like this is happening at a regular enough duration that some of you could capture the before / during / after time frame which might show a likely causal event.

If you are rooted, you could likely see even more (or better) information from the kernel messages.

Just a reminder / thought...

Registered here to add my voice to the cacophony...

My Samsung Centura S738c clock continues to lose five hours every night. Straight Talk support has not been able to fix it. Samsung support takes no responsibility.

All calendars and times/zones are correctly set in my apps. I've tried wiping the cache, turning wifi off/on, turning automatic syncs off/on, clearing app data, deleting cookies (which Straight Talk suggested), removing battery, system reset, etc..

Rooting my new phone and installing an app is not an elegant solution. Very bummed. I've won watches from claw machines that keep better time.

Boo.

It's been five days and it hasn't changed time yet.

I'm cautiously optimistic that this is the solution. A bit annoying because I like allowing my phone to use location services. However, the time/clock/alarm is far more of a crucial function for me.

So, the solution that seems to work for me, so far. Is to uncheck/turn off all location services. I haven't trouble-shot each specific location service to see if only one of them is a problem and not others, except to say that the problem still occurred if gps was off and the others on. I've listed the three location services below. And if you want to try this fix, uncheck all of these.

Google's location service

GPS satellites

Location & Goggle search

Sorry, I should have added where to find location services, just in case some aren't familiar and so you don't have to search around.

Settings/Location Services

uncheck all of those, and hopefully that will do the trick

Yep. Unfortunately a few days ago my time changed despite the location services all off.

I can't believe Samsung hasn't fixed this.

To reiterate, my time/clock function is a core function of EVERY mobile phone I've had, and I've had many since 1993. And my calendar/reminder/alert function is a core function of every smartphone I've ever had. And both are terrifying to rely on with this problem. I'm at the end of my rope on this one.

It is quite astonishing how they are ignoring this problem. I personally know three other people who have this phone and all of them have this problem. So did mine. I have an s3 now but I still frequent the Centura forum. I don't think there is a single Centura without this problem. I wonder if the Discover does the same thing...

I called Samsung. I was told to take it to BestBuy and have them do a re-flash. Has anyone tried this?

That makes me think even more that they are just trying to cover the problem up even more. I don't recall anyone mentioning they have tried this, though.

I'll be trying this today or this evening I think. I'm not optimistic. But I'll relay the experience.

A thanks and like now and again when you report back. I am very interested in this and while I, too, can't say I am optimistic... I hope it works. If you have the time, maybe you can write down what software you have now to compare what, if any, changes occur. Also, a few months ago, there was an update these phones received. Didn't fix the problem but just pointing out out. Maybe you can ask them if they know if the flash they are going to use is identical to what it came with or if it is something a little different.

I wouldn't trash Samsung over this. I have an HTC phone and found this thread because I have the same issue.

Reflashing makes some sense. Let us know your result.

I don't mean to come off sounding like I'm trashing Samsung, I just find it odd how they haven't exactly manned up to this problem. After my Centura I got another Samsung. I love my S3. But I bet 99% of Centuras out there, if not all of them, have this problem to some degree.

I think you are dealing with mostly front-line support people who are following scripts and don't really have a lot of technical knowledge.

That said, I didn't mean the word "trash" as strongly as you took it. That's my problem though not yours. I need to tone it down generally.

I agree though that it seems Samsung isn't worrying too much about this issue. Since it's not just them, they are probably waiting for someone else to fix it, like a user :-)
