Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

It definitely is not a finished model. They haven't put the final software into production.

What do you know?

If you give it to anyone outside of sprint, you better make dang sure that it is finished. Period.

You can not give a phone to the one of the greatest image marketing people on the face of the planet, and give her a prototype.

If it is given to oprah, then it has been given to testers and reviewers. Which means it has to be ready to launch.

I am sorry, but it makes zero sense to give her the phone unless it is ready for you.

1) i agree that they couldn't have given her a prototype. if that was the case, they could have just given her a model already on sale that is a finished product. i can picture the sprint guy giving a prototype EVO to Oprah: "i'm a big fan, but before you go on air, please remember that you can only do light browsing, google goggles, friendstream, and play this video clip pre-loaded onto the phone cuz, well, those are the only things ready at this point." LOL

2) however, from what everyone is saying, it just seems like the EVO got a few seconds on the TV and that's it. it's not like she said "here we have the HTC EVO that will be available on Sprint very shortly, and i absolutely love it!" if she did talk about the phone directly AT ALL, that's huge, but i doubt that she did. so if she didn't, this isn't that big of a deal besides thinking it's kind of neat.

I'm not so hot about Oprah for other reasons...but I have to say that I've also been impressed by many of the topics and shows she has covered over the years...especially health and medical themed shows. So...I feel a little peeved that she has it and we don't...but I have to say....if your a marketing this phone in a savvy way you want big time celebrities to have this phone. And to think her audience isn't a great target...well...I disagree. My wife is very stoked about this phone....and many women can more easily put this phone in their purse...where guys will look to carry it another way...or pocket it. Women are just as connected as men...look at the social networking sites...FB and Twitter. And they also do business and travel. So I think it's smart for Sprint to do this...even though I would have a few celebrities that I would rather see carrying this phone. Ultimately, few people have the platform of Oprah. She likes something...it is a big hit...books, food....anything. Now...from what I've read...she did make the pedophile comment with regard to the camera. If I were Sprint I would be PISSED! And..it's so wrong to make that connection. The technology isn't bad...it's the person. And...what makes anyone believe that this phone will truly facilitate such behavior. I would think web cams at home would be much more likely to be used to commit such crimes. Anyway, my rant is finished. I think it's good to have the publicity....I think her audience provides a chance for new customers for Sprint....but I think she's irresponsible to make such ignorant statements. Unfortunately...many people will hear her stupid comment...and take it for gospel.

Interesting. Just got home (from the beer distro, of course) and passed the Sprint store along the way. There is now a sign right next to the road that says "Sprint" with an arrow pointing to the storefront. I have never ever, ever, ever noticed this sign before.

Perhaps they're starting to send additional signage to stores in anticipation for the EVO/4G/media blitz event. I'm assuming they want to create a public awareness, even in little rinkydink areas such as my town for people who may not be aware of their local Sprint store (my PR degree talking, here.) Cool!

River,
I am normally on your side when you post. And what you are say makes perfect sense, but you can clearly see the numbers on the left side of the phone when you zoom in. When is the last time you have seen that on a final production phone? Never... I didn't watch oprah today, but who says they gave her an evo? This no different than given it to engadget, or mobile crunch or whoever.

Nexus 1? Not exactly flagship material.. MyTouch? Hardly great.. Um...

It's frustrating when people complain about Sprint's lack of phones. EVERY CARRIER has 3 great devices and a bunch of cheaper ones. Sprint has Hero, Moment, TouchPro2. Soon to be EVO. Sure we don't have the Nexus 1. The Incredible is still too new to be jealous of.

edit: I forgot HD2.. T-Mo has that.. But we get the better half in a month!

Frankly, Sprint, in my eyes, has always had great options. People just love to complain. The grass is always greener on Verizon.

No every other network has phones that are better than sprint, that's reality not just people wanting to complain.

I am sure this was talked about yesterday but Sprint has to make sure their media blitz for the EVO can not be easily over shadowed by the announcement of another phone.

either way, its going to be very difficult not to see the evo EVERYWHERE on the web after May 12. Sprint invited all the major bloggers, so the sites are going to be loaded with Evo. i think that will be a good way of getting word out. then, sprint starts commercials. and plus, i forget what network jackson said his buddy works for, but sprint will be running commercials on that channel june 6.

Could the engraving be just so they can keep track of the phone? I'm not sure it suggests unfinished or finished...
what do you mean? the serial number that was on the kickstand? im sure that was just to show that it was a demo phone.

No surprise that Oprah had an EVO on her show. I went to her website to see what it was about and the show was focused on the "No Phone Zone" campaign against texting while driving.

Low and behold, at the top right hand corner, look who one of the sponsors is
http://www.oprah.com/packages/no-phone-zone.html

What I love is all over her page its "No Phone Zone".

Click on the first video off the above page that has her saying "you see that little light blinking, your wanting to see who sent you the message" But don't worry about that, just scroll down to the related links part of the page and you will see the mobile app for oprah that you will get instant alerts when tickets are available for her show LOL. She starts the "no phone zone" but still has a link for her app.... thats just great.

As for her having the EVO on her show.... Alot of people take her word and go with it. Her audience is very VERY large and since Sprint is a sponsor for her "movement" that would be why they would have her show the newest and greatest phone thats coming out soon from Sprint.

Hi fellow EVO fans - just wanted you to know I've used and installed ZAGG, Ghost-Armor, and bodyguardz.com for friends, family etc. Hell I even helped a buddy out in his local tint shop installing 3M paint protection film on hoods and bumpers. So enough of my experience with paint protection etc. I know most of you are avid fans of Zagg, but Ghost-Armor is a much "smoother" and more invisible material and it is just as tough as Zagg. I've been using it more recently because it's cheaper as well. Here's their deal for the EVO:

HTC EVO 4G Ghost Armor - HTC - HTC EVO 4G - Ghost Armor | cases, screen-protectors, shields, skins, covers, armor

Pretty affordable isn't it? I hope some of you consider it

Also for those of you like me who are really accurate with an xacto knife and tracing tools, you can make your own "shields" for anything with this material:

Cut To Fit Sheets - StickerCity.com

Trust me, it's the same stuff laser cut and sold for gadgets and automobiles.

Enjoy

Case 1: unfinished. I get it, wish I didn't.
Case 2: finished. They could be handing out many to different celebrities for "free" advertising, and looking at a number on the back to see who has or hasn't returned theirs is easier than going into settings for esn/phone number...
Possible? Yes. Probable? Probably not. Giving hope and the other side of thinking.

I will say that I used Ghost Armor with my Pre and it was an excellent skin; however no that it isn't as thick as Invisa-shield Skins...

Pro... No orange peel effect, no discoloring, no tacky feeling

Con's.... Skin is thinner and allowed protection, but don't drop it on the ground and expect no digs on the actual phone..

I used both and IMO the pro's definitely out weight the con's

Okay here's how it works...doesn't matter what Evo Oprah was given. Whether it was a gold phone or unfinished. All they needed it for was cut-a-ways of her signing up for something on the No Phone Zone webpage. People at CTIA were browsing the web so I can almost say without a doubt they sent a Sprint Rep to the show, put the phone in her hands, taped a couple shots of her with the phone in her hand, gave it to her so she could have it in her hands during the show and that's about it.

She's not blogging about it she's not promoting it, she used it for the show cause Sprint was a sponsor. It was on the screen for 5 seconds at the most.

Also do you think this phone will come out with Prince of Persia loaded on it, like the HD2 had Transformer loaded on the SD card? If that's the case PoP doesn't come out till the end of May. I forget how long it takes until the DVD comes out but I couldn't see the Evo having Prince of Persia on the SD card before it's released on DVD.

Any thoughts?

Even with a serial number it could be a finished "review" model. I said like a million posts ago that I believe the phone might launch with or before the Prince of Persia movie since they are tied in together. Also as I stated the Evo may get a partial launch at least in 4G areas. As far as the June 6th or 13th launch date those may be the line in the sand dates I mentioned earlier but if the phone is ready sooner...ACTION! I worked in the cell industry for a while and I do understand how launches and testing and such progress. Mind you this is all just MY OPINION based on clues, facts, and experience. I am not a marketing genius or expert and once again this is just SPECULATION and OPINION. :)

Maybe a coupon or code for a free download when it is available.

ahh.... I don't think PoP will be on the SD Card unless it sucks horribly and ends up on DVD within a week of release and two... I was just watching a T-Horrible commercial and apparently the HD2 is buy one get one free.... IMO if the EVO releases costing more than what the Pre did last year we could see tapered sales....

So while I was working earlier today, and thinking about how everyone's saying "sprint needs to get this marketing blitz out," "they need to advertise."

I thought what if someone that had the money, and took some of those ads online, such as the sprint ones on youtube, and called up the cable company, or whatever TV provider, and had them set up commercials haha.

National TV Spots - Costs of Advertising on Television - TV Commercial Prices - Resources for Entrepreneurs - Gaebler Ventures - Chicago, Illinois

Now of course that could be illegal or not, but I wouldn't know haha. Just was a cool thought :P

T-Mobile has a tenancy to do this all the time. They literally almost give away their phones for business. Too bad too if you've ever been to Europe T-Mobile over there is night and day compared to what you see here in the states. They suck pretty bad here but all over Spain, France, Italy and Germany they're a pretty good top notch provider, it's too bad the same can't be said for T-Mobile USA.

I have a few dozen demo and final production units from different companies around my house.

And EVERYONE has a DEMO/TEST/REVIEW/EVALUATION sticker and SERIAL stamp heat pressed into the out shell.

Everyone of them.

Minus one because it was after release model.

So the stamp makes it more believable.

I'd believe it, their cost didn't seem to bad either. I currently receive 19% off my Sprint bill and would get 15% off with t-mobile. In addition to that, they have a non contract price that would yield a family plan for 2 at 129.99 plus $5 per line... would almost be worth it if I cared about t-mobile.
