Root Custom Hotwords on Launcher (now available)

Rxpert83

Dr. Feelgood
Looks like the devs at OMNIROM have been very busy lately, and it looks like its working very well so hopefully we see this in the nightlies soon.

The ability to add custom hotwords to open up any number of apps, bookmarks, contacts, ect

Its demo'd here:

Hopefully this one ends up being released, as it looks like the Moto-X style always listening was held up by qualcomms lawyers:

Awesome, gonna throw it on PA now :)

Its got some issues with cutting off text or widgets when you play with the rows/columns, but I can live with that for now

I haven't tried messing with the rows and colomns yet to see if it's working fine here. When I have the time later today, I'll play around with them and see what transpires.

Looks like one of the DU versions (Yuga, I think) has this already. ;)

I do like the fact, however, that NYCHitman doesn't seem to rush out features and seems to put a lot into making sure they work before release. :)

Is there a way to mute the voice activation sound? When the launcher is in the foreground, pressing the home softkey automatically emits the voice start sounds.

Edit: nvm got it muted through xposed app settings

Yep, once I get too and over 8 rows and 8 columns it started cutting off the text. That's no big issue for me since anything under that seems fine and that is plenty of rows and columns. As you said thought "I can live with that for now"

Mine was cutting off at 5x4 :dontknow:

Wow, this is pretty sweet! Works on stock too? It's pretty amazing what rom devs do for free... Honestly, a stable custom rom is usually better than stock; and I imagine those devs for big manufacturers make a decent wage.

True that!
Yeah, I guess not only does it work on the N5 stock and without root, but it's also working on other devices running KitKat.

5x4 huh... It might be because of the LCD density/DPI setting on PA. If you wanted to you could edit it in the build prop and lower it. It's probably set at around 460 to 480 or so. Where mine is set at 420.
I think that's why I can fit more columns and rows before it starts cutting things.

You were right. Its at 480.

For some reason the launcher perma-mutes the media volume. There's another post on XDA the user was on omnirom had similar problem.

Forgive my ignorance but I have looked everywhere (guess not everywhere) and can not find how to use this feature in DU.

Help please......................

Also curious about this, does it require a specific launcher?

Yes it's OminRom's launcher3. The same one that also comes with DU... Although it now has the Hotword detection baked into the launcher3.
To use Launcher3's hotword detection all you do is, hold down on an empty space on the home screen (like you were going to add a widget) and select "Settings". It will open Launcher3 settings. You then go to "Hotword Detection". Type in the custom word/s that you want and then select the app that you want to be activated with your custom word/s.

Since it's a separate launcher obviously you can't use the Google Now Launcher with the hotword detection feature. I personally like the Google Now Launcher and have always used it, but have enjoyed using Launcher3 for the last week or so... It is cool.

Also you can just go to "Settings" then "Home" and switch between the Google Now Launcher and Launcher3.

If you just dirt flash the new DU test build (once it's available) with hotword detection baked in, It will keep all your settings and user data for the Google Now Launcher too.

I use Nova and probably won't switch. The voice app will launch any app by preceding the app name with the word "Launch." I think if I used voice more (like using my phone a lot in the car-- I don't, I commute by public transportation) it probably would make a bigger difference to me.

Ah, I see. I did play with that launcher for an hour or so but I'm just so used to the Google Now (Google Experience?) Launcher that I just couldn't get into it. I think, for now at least, having Google Now just a swipe to the left away is more useful to me than being able to set custom hotwords.

Might rock this launcher for a while, is there any other cool stuff I can do with it? Notifications? Unread count badges? Etc?

This issue has been fixed already :)

4.4.2-251 build? I'm still getting the mute bug and I have to force close the launcher to listen to the media volume.

The customization is just as restrictive and simple as the stock Google launcher. If you still have xposed you can use xposed gel settings. The hotword detection compensates for its simplicity though, you can put any command you wish like saying one word to the launcher and all of a sudden your default music player begins to play. You can tell your phone to sleep or you could run a script.

Some of these features i described are app dependent to other apps (tasker, ROM toolbox, etc.)
