With the above settings and the APP link below. When you goto your installed Apps and bring up WiFi Tether and hit START. It starts the tether infrastructure that's built into the phone. You'll see it at the top of the phone launch.

Hey, I was going through this thread and noticed this. Do you have any idea why FoxFi did not work for PS3? [I ask because FoxFi claims: "You can connect from any computers or tablets or even game console."]

This worked for a friend a few weeks back using just the Google Tether App mentioned in the first post. Didn't have to change anything else.

Under settings:

Device Profile = Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Setup method = Native Framework Tether
SSID is something like: tetherfallback in the phones built-in tether function
Select Channel = Channel 01
Change Lan = 192.168.2.0/24

Vibrate on connect "check"

Thank you very much! Took a while to connect the first time, but has since connected fine every other time so far. Also, encryption works with this method. So far so good. I am using Fiddler to mask my header without a VPN. All is well... for now :)

I've lost the thread here. The WiFi Tether app in the OP; I thought this did not work with encryption?

I was referring to the method in the post I quoted and of it being successful. But prier to using this method I was using the method described in the OP. Previously I had to use a VPN and a header-agent, on top of having to kill the script just to connect.

With this new method (so far) all I have to do is turn on wifi tether via the app and nothing else on the phone side. On my computer side just turn on Fiddler and let it do its thing in the background. Very easy.
 
Also to note, this is the same WiFi Tether for Root Users app mentioned in the OP. Just change the settings mentioned in fryguy2's post. Again, thank you!

I am with T-mobile and I'm not sure if this works for MetroPCS users. I did notice that once I got it working there was no up-sale screen at all. Strange. Every page worked just fine. Weird. However, T-mobile does only give me a small amount of Mobile Hotspot with my plan so I still need to mask the headers to hide any desktop data. No problem with Fiddler.

EDIT: Not sure if this method will work for everyone! I just tried using the native T-mobile hotspot app (which never worked before today) and it works fine for me now. So take my case and add a grain of salt if it works for you too. Not sure what happened. I am not paying for extra Hotspot access. Not sure if this method somehow unlocked something or if the T-mobile system somehow missed me today and will catch me tomorrow. We will see.

@fryguy2 was referring to this: android-wifi-tether - Wireless Tether for Root Users - Google Project Hosting [the app in the OP]. You need to kill "System/bin/Hostapd" after starting the app. Are we on the same page now? The built-in hotspot framework only works [w/o paying for hotspot] if you use a VPN or something like Market Unlocker [set to Russia]?
 
Several points guys:

1. As somebody mentioned above, native tethering works with T-Mobile SIM. You don't need any extra apps/tweaks. So much easier and more stable. When using method described in OP sometimes I had to toggle mobile data switch off and back on because internet connection just hanged on the phone.


2. I read somewhere that if you use Market Unlocker app and point it to Russian operator then native tethering on the phone will work. 4pda{dot}ru/forum/index{dot}php?showtopic=298361, you will have to register to download. Much easier than OP method and you can use wi-fi encryption that way.


3. If you use fiddler on desktop/laptop side, try using IE11(Win 8.1) as a user agent. There is no t-mobile upsell page and internet is working normally on windows machine. With other user agents I had some problems, amazon won't log me in, search from address bar in Chrome was not working, etc

There is no need to register to download

As I was playing around with all the methods I found out I may be a unique case. I'm on T-mobile prepaid. For some reason I can use the built-in hotpot feature fine and well. All I need to do is use Fiddler on my computer and all works well.

This is funny and strange because this wasn't the case when I signed up with the service. When I first tried to use the built-in hotspot app/feature I would get a prompt stating I wasn't signed up for Hotspot with an option to sign-up, then automatically shut itself off if I pressed cancel. So I tried the method in the original post to connect but then found out about the T-mobile upsell page. A VPN helped to an extent to get around this.

Well, for more kicks and giggles, I try the method used in the recent post. It worked for me. I connected without having to kill any script and I wasn't prompted to upsell on my computer side. I thought the method worked. However, after more playing around I attempted to just turn on my built-in hotspot to see what would happen... and low and behold it worked. It turns on and I don't get an upsell page from T-mobile. I was thinking maybe it was a hiccup on T-mobile's side but I have already cycled through a new month and I still have it.

My thought: I believe I somehow got switched to a grandfathered prepaid plan that once allowed 100mb of free hotspot. This plan existed several months before I signed up but from what I read was not available anymore. I know I didn't read it in the features of my plan before signing up. However, I now see "Mobile Hotpot Usage: 0.0MB/100.0MB" on My T-mobile account while I didn't have it before. And to get around adding any MB toward my hotspot usage I simply use Fiddler to mask my desktop activity.

So like I said, I am a unique case. I either simply got lucky, I guess, or T-mobile has returned some free hotspot usage to their lowest prepaid plans again.

What you are using is a Chrome extension, therefore what that extension does only applies to outgoing traffic from Chrome browser.


Fiddler, on the other hand, is "system-wide". Meaning it applies to everything outgoing from your computer. You can use any other browser or program that way. Although not running a fiddler I have never had any problems with any other program than a browser.

[If I want to replace my browser specific User Agent...]
1. Download and install the windows program from Fiddler free web debugging proxy
2. Download a file from here TinyUpload.com - best file hosting solution, with no limits, totaly free and copy it into documents/fiddler2/scripts.
3. Add a shortcut to Fiddler in Windows start up folder
4. Done? Any more configuration necessary before Fiddler takes the place of my browser specific User Agent?

That way you will have hassle-free method to use your PC. Just turn on and use as usually,

There are a number of tethering methods discussed in this thread. Which one or all of these have this limitation? i.e. The one in the OP does not seem to have this limitation as presented here?
