Introducing the Virgin Mobile LG Optimus F3 Native Wi-Fi Hotspot Hack!

Screenshot.png

This mod bypasses Virgin Mobile's block on the native Wi-Fi hotspot. It is a functional alternative to the WiFi NetMgr LG F3 app. It should work with both 3g and 4g.

This mod is based on the hotspot hack for the LG G2 developed by xda member Metalboy94 (thread here), so be sure to head on over there and drop him a big thanks.

Requirements:

- A rooted device
- ClockworkMod Touch recovery 6.0.4.8 (It may work with 2nd-Init but I have no way to test this)
- Busybox (for the flashable zip)
Deodexed stock ZV6 or ZV7 Rom (I am currently researching how to create an odexed version. I can also make de/odexed versions for the ZV5 Rom if someone were to upload the system/framework/services.jar from those roms.

Disclaimer:

I am not responsible for anything that may happen to your device as a result of applying this mod including but not limited to hard or soft bricking, performance loss, or anything else. (But it should work just fine.)
:-)

Instructions:

Power off your phone. Boot into recovery by holding the volume down and power keys until you see the text telling you to release them. Wipe cache and dalvik cache, then tap Install zip. Choose internal or external, whichever you downloaded the zip to and confirm. Go back and tap reboot. You're done!

Alternatively, you can use your root file explorer app (ES File Explorer or Root Explorer for example) to mount the system partition as read/write and copy/paste the services.jar file extracted from the zip to the /system/framework folder, overwriting the original and setting the file's permissions to rw- r-- r--. Don't forget to remount the system partition as read only when you're done. Reboot the phone to complete installation.

To turn on the hotspot go to System settings > More... Portable Wi-Fi hotspot and check the box. You can also tap Set up Wi-Fi hotspot if you want to change the Network SSID, security type, password, SSID visibility and Max users.
Note: You will see the Android is upgrading... Optimizing apps dialog on first boot after you flash. Be patient and let it finish.

The goods:

Download ZV6 version here.

Download ZV7 version here.

Enjoy! :-)

So I followed the exact directions in the op and I'm still getting the error. I wiped cache and dalvik. I'm on v6 deodexed and rooted.

I too had same issue but when i look into it flashing zip through touch recovery doesnt ever change services.jar file so i manually just copied and pasted it into /system/framework/ and renamed old one to keep for backup but doing it this way did allow the trick to work!! Thanks for finding this and lilrich just try opening zip finding the services.jar and rename it copy n paste in /system/framework and renaming it back to services.jar and u should be fine after reboot

Thanks this method worked first time

I am working on an odexed version, but I keep getting a read only file system error with the dexopt-wrapper even after I remount /system as rw... I'm looking into it, my phone is just being funny.

This works for tethering but I found out an issue with it today. It breaks the ability to send videos messages. I let it try to send for 5 minutes, reverted back to the stock file and tried again. The video sent in just a few seconds.

Edit: I need someone to test the odexed version and give feedback. Download here.

Tested Odexed version. When starting the hotspot, an error is displayed: 'Network error - Unable to connect to data network. You not be subscribed to the data plan for Hotspot and USB tether service. Please contact your phone company.

This isn't true... I can send videos just fine and I have this mod as well

Seems to turn on fine, but are most people having it work in the long run? I tried tethering it to my tablet (I deodexed and manually moved the jar -- the zip didn't work for me. I don't think I had busybox) and the feature would turn on and usually stay on (not always) and when it did work, it switched around networks an unusually high number of times. I mean, this phone is unstable with holding a network anyhow, but this switches unusably often. Are others seeing this?

Is there a ZV6 Odexed version that has been tested and working?

More detail on how to do this.

while in the stockhospot setting there is a setting that says timeout, just switch it to never. As far as foring to 4g, you can do this via lg hidden menu. i prefer using this app, just change it to lte only in the set prefered network type section. just dont forget to swith it back. while in lte only text and calls are disabled until you switch back to the stock setting.

I'd like to try this, however, I have not received an answer to my question on whether there is a ZV6 Odexed version of the WiFi Hotspot app.

------------

there is not one for odexed, only deodexed. if you dont want to switch to deodexed i suggest you use robahos tethering app, it was specifily made for f3 and i can confirm it works just as good as the stock

Already tried that. Doesn't work.

------------
doesn't work for you... based on the number of attempts I'm fairly certain you messed up the binaries. if you use the unbrick with v5+ and then just root and install my app it us going to work...

Not worth the hassle. Would have to completely setup phone from scratch. Too much work for one single app. Already have another WiFi app that works. Just trying to use native stock apps in lieu of additional third party apps.

that's understandable, but don't make a blanket statement that is doesn't work, because that is blatantly false.
