Help Droid Maxx Bug Reports and Problems

If you want to use auto-brightness, by the way, there is a great app called Lux that better manages that. You do need to interact with it a bit at first, to link specific lighting levels with the brightness that you want, but it helps me use auto-brightness in a way the stock Maxx does not - keep the levels low indoors, when the phone is quite readable, but also allow levels to be readable in bright sunlight outdoors, which you just cannot do on the Maxx with autobrightness on, at least in my experience.

The 48 hour battery life was an advertising thing only and assumed low to medium phone use with few background tasks with a strong mobile signal. If you use the phone a lot or have a lot of apps running in the background - fetching mail and social network feeds, uploading photos and videos after you take them - or found yourself frequently in places where the signal was weaker and your phone had to send more power to the antenna to keep connected, you could never get 48 hours on a single charge. Some people who use the Maxx still do, but I think many of us probably get from 24 to 36 hours on a single charge since the KitKat update. When I first bought the phone I tended to get about 40 hours on a charge, but I now use the phone for a lot more than I used to (I used to use an iPod for playing music, and carried both the phone and the iPod, but I stopped doing that) and I know easily get through a full day with plenty of battery to spare. Yesterday for some reason my phone's screen stayed on in my pocket for a full 90 minutes displaying an error message, but I still went to bed with about 30% battery left after 16 hours. Most days, if I do not charge, I go to bed with between 35% and 50% battery left - but most days I find a way to sneak in some charging, such as while I am driving somewhere, or sitting at my desk for an hour, etc.

I assume you got it new from Verizon.

In the short time you have had the phone ... did you do a system upgrade? If you did, did you do a Factory Data Reset after you did the upgrade?

If you did not do a system upgrade or did a system upgrade followed by a Factory Data Reset then you could try running in Safe Mode (disabling all apps you added without uninstalling them). If the issue stops then it is caused by an app that you added. Id it doesn't then I would discuss it with Verizon.

I did get it new from Verizon, and it did do an update right away but it never occurred to me to do a factory reset since it was brand new. I did that this morning so we'll see how it goes today.

Also, just to clarify - I'm not expecting 48 hours of straight talk time, but 14 hours seemed way too low. Here's hoping for a good battery day!

I am in a VERY strong signal area and my use is light. I measured it 3 times going to full discharge. It was right around 3 days each time.

I have a simple Tasker profile that monitors the proximity sensor. It turns the screen off when the sensor is covered unless I am on a call in which case it leaves the screen on. (The fact that it doesn't come that way is almost as stupid as them forcing the NFL app on everyone.)

The profile ...

So I'm 9 hours and 45 minutes in and battery is at 54% so that seems a little better. Should I drain it entirely before charging to 100% or just charge when I go to bed tonight?

I have a Tylt wireless charger next to my workstation. It holds it at a 45 degree angle. I just park it there when I am at my desk and NEVER think about it.

Charge it when you go to bed.

I received my Droid Maxx yesterday and set everything up correctly. At least I hope it was correct. My home e-mail is a verizon.net account and after I set up the e-mail I replied to someone. Several hours later, that reply was still sitting in the outbox. I sent a message to my g-mail account this morning and it (along with the reply mentioned above) were still sitting in the outbox several hours later.

I'm receiving e-mails in a normal time frame. Its the outgoing e-mails that bug me.

After about 2 hours of time with verizon technical support (level 2), the messages in the outbox were sent, but it still takes anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour for the message to be sent.

For a simple text e-mail, this is rather ridiculous. What am I doing wrong?

I really want to like this phone and so far this is the only glitch.

Gmail has always worked ok - the problem was with the home (verizon.net) account.

Are you sure that the outgoing smtp server settings are right?

For anybody having issues with the default email app (which is crappy) I always suggest trying out the email app K9 from the play store. It's a much better mail app.

The SMTP settings are the same that I use on my home email and my Galaxy tablet, both with no problems. Perhaps there's something external to the default email setting or in the general settings for the phone.

I'll try K9 and see how that works for me. Thanks for the tip.

The only issue with home smtp settings is sometimes they only work when you are home. Verizon may only allow those connections to their smtp server when you are connected to your home network. (Verizon wireless is different from Verizon fios or dsl and I assume that the verizon.net address is your fios/dsl email address.)

Is the mail only delayed when you're away from home? That's a possible explanation.

I know my cable Internet mail address has a different smtp setting for mobile devices. If you're using an smtp server using port 25 then that could be the problem.

Here's a page with server settings for a fios mail server.

If that's already the case, though, the try k9.

I second using K9 mail.
It's the best mail app I have ever tried.
If they would fully support exchange, it would be next to perfect IMHO.

I've had a Maxx for some months and suddenly it would start dropping wifi, and not be able to pick it back up. My phone screen was cracked so I had to get another one on an insurance claim. The one that arrived connected a few times and now will not at all. I have my Laptop, Xbox, kindle, and other cellphones on the wifi without problems.

The phone is allowing me to turn on wifi, it allows me to save the password but, when it can finally see my home network, which it doesn't always even though when it does it has it at excellent strength, It wont connect. When I hit connect the network suddenly drops to low strength or the connect option simply goes away without doing anything.

I have switched routers thinking that was the issue, from an old Belkin to a new TP-Link and the problem stayed the exact same. I have factory reset my phone to no effect. I have deselected 'avoid poor connections' and 'Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep' is on always. I am on Android version: 4.4, and system version: 19.6.3.obake - maxx _ verizon . Verizon . en . US,

This area is for reporting bugs and resolutions. Please post your questions that are not about bugs elsewhere.

When you do re-post your question please be specific. "soft reset" has a number of possible definitions. What is the need you are asking about?

Thank you.

Upgraded to 4.4.4 last night OTA. Post upgrade, I get a notification every 5 seconds or so "Message Delivery Failed or Message Receipt Failed."

I found one report in a more general android forum that suggested going into airplane mode and clearing all outboxes, then returning to standard mode was the solution for this. I went through all my outboxes and there are no outgoing messages. I scanned through my texts and facebook messages to see if there was an unsent message hiding there, no luck.

Any suggestions?

Yes, sorry. I also power cycled.

Next step I was considering was uninstall/reinstalling Facebook messenger. Not sure if I can do that with Hangouts or email.

I installed facebook Messenger, that did not help.one added side effect of this issue is that the notification pops up just often enough to keep my phone from sleeping when not in use. So it is killing my battery.

Two things I can think of:

- to see if it's an email issue, remove all of the email accounts from the phone, and then recreate them. If you're using IMAP or Exchange for the accounts, that shouldn't be a major problem - everything will sync back down again.

- to see if it's a text messaging issue, maybe go to settings / more... / Default SMS app and change it to Hangouts (or back to Messaging, if you were using Hangouts already) and see if you notice something when you switch.

Otherwise, I've not seen a message like that.

It was an SMS issue. Swapping from Hangouts to Messaging & back cleared it.

Now that I know that was the case, I suspect it is related to a remnant of a 3rd party messaging app (Contacts +) that I used for a while several phones ago. I uninstalled the app but apparently there's some remnant of it that didn't uninstall. It caused me problems when I had to migrate from one Droid Maxx to this one due to a defect. In that case it prevented me from getting texts at all because it was still in there telling the OS to route text messages to Contacts + even though the app was uninstalled. It probably flagged something on the upgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4.

Thanks for your help!

Hello all,

Google hasn't been any help with my issue, so I'm hoping some of you may have some insight. I've been having trouble with the Motorola Assist program ever since the last update (adding the "Home" features) came out. Whenever either home mode or driving mode are active and I receive a text message, the audio prompt of "You have received a new text message from [NAME]. To hear it, say 'Listen'" plays, but then immediately it goes into the failure messages of "Sorry, I didn't catch that" followed immediately by "Sorry, I didn't catch that. Let's talk later." I never have the chance to respond to the prompts. Some more information:

1) This problem started immediately after the update to the new version of Assist (V2.2.35).
2) This problem started before I installed the latest Kit Kat update (Curently running 4.4.4)
3) Uninstalling the update and then re-installing it did not work. I tried this twice. There is no option to completely uninstall the program.
4) Clearing the App's cache did not work.
5) Force stopping the app did not help.
6) Restarting the phone has not worked
7) The microphones work fine when placing a call, both normally and on speaker phone.
8) OK Goggle Now voice commands work just fine.
9) Sound Hound (music ID app) frequently will report that it can't open the microphone because another program has locked it.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I think it may just be a problem with the new software, but if so, why is no one else on google reporting the same problem? I'm baffled.

There's a problem with the Google search/now app and the support of "OK Google" in any app (note this is not touchless controls on the Maxx, which remains fine, but a feature of the search app on all phones.) Go into the Google app, scroll down to the bottom and touch the three dot control, settings, voice, OK Google detection, and turn off the always listening in all apps. See if that fixes it.
