Help Problem with the clock! / Time Keeps Changing Despite Settings

The BestBuy Samsung rep spent a ton of time (1.5 hrs) on my issue and nothing else. The re-flash proprietary software Samsung has doesn't even support the Centura. So out of luck on that front. His calling, trouble-shooting, etc resulted in more or less, nothing. And it seemed like he was knowledgeable and working hard to solve the problem. He at no point seemed like he was trying to pawn me off ot get rid of the problem without fixing it.

The general thinking is that it is a firmware issue that the carriers install. The key point being that the issue seems to only appear on the lower-end carriers. So I'll end up calling Tracfone the next time it happens, but I fully expect Tracfone to say it's a Samsung issue.

I think I'm going to end up rooting the phone and trying to find an app that will update the clock on it's own. I'm not sure, but the rooted version of clocksynch might do the trick.

Go to Settings and uncheck ALL location services. There are 3. Keep your GPS turned OFF. Go to Time and date and uncheck auto timezone detection. Leave use network time turned ON. I factory restored my phone using the volume and power key method. My time has been right for nearly 3 months now. Good luck

Did you do the Factory Reset with the volume and power key and choose wipe data. Mine was messing up daily and even worse when the weather was bad. After the factory reset when you sign up for Gmail they will ask you can they use your location for anonymous data. Choose NO. Then use the setttings above and dont allow any APPS to use your location info. Mine has been perfect since. I was at the point I was gonna put it in Airplane MOde and see how far I could throw it. I have Straight Talk and I bought the 29$ Black Friday special last year.

It must be something in the software. On my Centura.. I put it in airplane mode and out still continues to do it. I've seen others post in here about doing a factory reset to no avail. I am highly surprised that the same things fixed yours.

I called stupid samsung about my time rolling back 5hours without warning. The knowledgable service representative at Samsung said "gee, I never heard of such a thing. Maybe if you take yourWALMART straight talk phone to BEST BUY they MAY reflash your phone. But this is the first time I have heard about this problem." What a !@#$/ *& $#!&.

You got to factory restore in Recovery Mode. It is a combination of volume up and power and then start back from scratch then do the other steps leaving all location services OFF when settting up. You will have to reinstall all your APPS. You may also check your calendar settings as it has a time zone feature too. I have read people in the US with Australia time zone settings.Automaticall detect time zone OFF. Use network time OM

Make sure you take you SD card out and make sure use select WIPE ALL DATA when you restore. You can use the volume down button to select which method you want.

It's weird because it seems like mine does it only AFTER connecting to wifi/internet at some point. If I leave the wifi off for a long period of time it doesn't happen. It's like something is causing the phone to sync with the wrong time zone when connected to the internet. Either an app or a bug in the Android OS or it could be the pre-installed google apps (i.e. calendar, gmail) since others still had the problem even after doing a factory reset.

It would be interesting if everyone would post what apps are installed on their phones so we could see if there is one app that we all have in common that could be causing the problem.

Either way mine is definitely caused by something coming from the internet when my phone syncs and it's getting seriously annoying. I'm getting 'roid rage. Or it could just be China trying to destroy us and take over the world by slipping into our phones...

Mine did and does it in airplane mode, so maybe you could see if yours does, too. The only reason I know is because I got another phone and tried that with my Centura. I thought it was very odd.

My son and I have this phone and were having the same problem. I went into settings under date & time and checked both automatic date & time and Automatic time zone and so far, this seems to have cured the problem.

And it's not the phone either. I had a T-Mobile 3g Slide when I added to this thread and it happened enough that I quit using the phone as my alarm. Going to work late two times in two weeks at a new job will do that. I recently retired that phone in favor of a Nexis 5 and it's done no twiddling with the time.

Well it is every Centura. Ohh did you mean it's not JUST the Centura? When they went on that Black Friday sale awhile back I had a few friends pick up some. They had the same problem and still are to this day. As did mine. But now I have an S3 and it doesn't do it. Both of my phones are through Straight Talk and I live in the same house. Granted the Centura uses Verizon and my S3 uses Sprint but I noted earlier that the Centura does it in airplane mode also.

I can't believe no one ever owned up to the problem.

Yes, that's what I meant. It's more than just the Centura phone. It's widespread and should have been owned up to but my guess is there was a bug in the Android SDK...

I too have a Samsung Galaxy Centura. I too have the missing 5 hour problem. The only solution I have found so far is to turn the phone off, then on. Or, deselect automatic time updates, and then turn it back on. I've read through this thread, and have not seen a solution.

I am working on documenting the problem, but I can't provide any links to it yet. How many posts are required before this site will allow me to insert links?

Hey Jon, welcome to our AndroidForums :).

You should be able to add a link in your next post, I believe--go ahead and paste it and I'll fix it up if it doesn't appear properly.

I've posted in here before about potential ways for folks to capture data about this (system log messages via logcat, or if you're rooted, cat /proc/kmsg to view kernel messages), but haven't seen any subsequent references or questions about this...

Cheers!

Thanks for the reply! I'll try to link to my findings....

Samsung Galaxy Centura - Time Keeping Issue

Well, I guess it worked! I hope someone finds my findings interesting. I'm still working on the problem. It is a fine kettle of fish!

Jon

@Jon, very nice write-up and analysis of your guys' issue(s).

I see you already did the logcat thing which doesn't seem to show an obvious culprit but does indeed document the time change issue very clearly.

If you can find a rooted Centura owner, then perhaps the kernel messages would show something significant? :dontknow:

Cheers again and best of luck!

Thanks! I'll keep working on it. I may post my findings on one of the programming sites that deals with Android phones. Maybe I can get some additional ideas that way. It will take some time though!

There is a link on the page that shows 2 code snippets to change system time and time zone. My guess is someone happened on those, included them in an app they were writing and forgot to take them out, or left them in with intent to essentially vandalize phones. Just a guess.

That may be so, but it has to be a program that has access to root. A regular App can not change the cellphone time, since it does not have the required permissions.

Hello, I'm having the same issue as well. I live in the Central time zone, it keeps changing to Mountain time. It happens randomly throughout the day, (it does seem to favor 2 am), and it happens shortly after I turn the phone off/battery dies.
I've taken the battery out, restored to factory settings, and changed my calendar settings.
I'm really starting to hate this phone. It's my first experience with Straight Talk. I had previously owned the Samsung Galaxy 5. I never had any issues with that one.

I've asked around at work, and there seems to be a lot of people hearing about this problem. Makes me wonder why there hasn't been a fix provided by Samsung.

So, my question: Did I overlook any other tricks for this? What am I missing? I use this phone for an alarm clock, and well, I don't trust it!

Thanks <3
