Root [Virgin Mobile/Sprint] VM LS720V7 - Updating, Rooting, and Unbricking

I am currently running v6 rooted with link2sd, do I have to do anything special concerning link2sd to upgrade to v7?
Thanks.

I'm not sure but I would make a full backup in cwm. Run the upgrade and test to see if you still have access to your apps with link2sd. If not, re-root, re-install cwm and then do an advanced restore, and restore your userdata. If it doesn't, all you need to do is wipe/reset and then restore the full backup of your v6 data.

I haven't used link2sd in a few months. I'm not sure if it can be restored that way, but it's worth a shot.

If you don't use link2sd what do you use? Android guy's script?

What steps did you take if any?

Nothing special I followed instructions to a T. Only thing I did extra was wipe cache and Dalvik before flashing. After flash/reboot I ran towel root (already had SU installed from previous rooted v6) and she was good to go... Nothing special in my case had to be done for the link2sd

Good to know. I was using the psycho billy rom which used an init.d script that allowed me to switch the internal and external sdcards. Currently i'm on stock. I'm about to create a flash-able script to re-install it.

I was looking at one yesterday on the general f3 forums... Probably the same initd script. It swapped the internal with external as well

Thanks a lot xclusive36 and leeb0z - that was the easiest update/re-root yet!
Link2sd still works normally.

xclusive36 are you still working on an upgrade to the radio?

Thanks again!

Yes, and no. I'm about finished with stock v7 roms. They just need a little testing to make sure there's nothing unexpected like the keyboard force closing in the deodexed version. It includes the updated modem partition. (radio)

I'm thinking that it may become a huge headache if I try to setup an update directly.

Is it normal when booting up your phone on the modded v7 update to say device unlock, boot successful and load the old bootanimation when activating a new device and stay at the LG loading screen for 20 minutes?

I think mines always said that since changing recoveries... If I'm not mistaken, I believe that it has to do with the loki work around/2nd init

Well I think I soft bricked my phone and tried to go to clockworkmod recovery but some how it got uninstalled and it has the default recovery

to say device unlock, boot successful
Yes

load the old bootanimation when activating a new device and stay at the LG loading screen for 20 minutes?
No

Is that what happened after you ran the update? Did you do a factory reset just before or after?

It will go back to the old boot animation if you do a factory rest. It will also take longer than normal for first boot. Not 20 minutes worth. Maybe 5 at the most.

Did you reboot? Did it boot or do the same thing?

I was messing with the build properties to change the device codename from REL to L to make the google home launcher work properly and then I rebooted normally like I always do but usually you can mess with the build props without the phone factory resseting itself.

I used the unbrick method to fix the problem.

Hi,

I'm still on V6, rooted+touch cwm recovery. I've managed to suppress the OTA notices.

How urgent is it to update to V7? I'm leery about soft-bricking since my main box is Linux.

On a side note: About the same time I managed to suppress the OTA notices, I got a text from Virgin about logging into Voice Mail to reset my pin/announcement for Visual Voice Mail. I finally did this yesterday, but I haven't tried Visual: It never worked before so I froze it. Q is: Is there a backdoor that Virgin can use to force OTA through Visual Voice Mail?

-Rouli.

Worked flawless for me. Just to note: I hit 'no' when asked to repair root during recovery. Phone is much smoother now. After I Saferooted V6, screen switching was very slow. Not anymore. The only issue I would say I ran into was that it took about 15 minutes for phone to connect to a tower for 3G/4G data.

Edit: Can the update be re-flashed with CWM after its been installed and re-rooted already once?

Yes, it can be re-run but it will change your recovery back to stock and remove root again.

Hey guys this may irreverent but Unlocking cellphones may be 100% legal soon, and all that has to be done is the president signing the bill
