Root [Virgin Mobile/Sprint] VM LS720V7 - Updating, Rooting, and Unbricking

Hi guys,
I recently reset my phone back to V5, and now I cant even get an update to V6.

I am completely stock for now and on V5. I want to update to V6, then V7 but as I said, suck at V5..

Any ideas?

yeah.. you went to v5 right? Just flash again to V6.. or goto V7.. Just flash what ever you want. Root can be achieved on all.

I am on ZV6 with CWM installed... I flashed the ZV7 update zip found in the OP and it did nothing. I rebooted and was still on ZV6. One thing... CWM prompted me that this update might remove root, so I clicked fix it before i rebooted. Should I not have done this?

Also, would it work if I were to unroot through SuperSU and then just accept the OTA update that the phone has downloaded and been nagging at me to install? Or will this cause a brick?

Thanks!

Just my opinion but I think the update zip is also broken because it does not detect the existing board/device properly - I needed to remove those lines.

Also if you applied any mods/themes the update will probably fail...

You need to pay close attention to any error messages.

To reiterate (sorry!), would it work if I were to unroot through SuperSU and then just accept the OTA update that the phone has downloaded and been nagging at me to install? Or will this cause a brick? Or would it be better to flash back to stock and then accept the OTA update? Just FYI the only modifications I have done to the phone is to debloat a bunch of the google apps and installed the Xposed framework with GravityBox.

Thanks!

Q1 - no
Q2 - yes
Q3 - if you know how to use LG Flash Tool you might as well flash the zv7 bin file found at the unbrick sticky and be done with it. Removal of bloat is one of the main problems causing failure with the ota. Hope this info helps.

This modded V7 is awesome! Faster interface, and improved radio, even without the upgraded radio.img. 4G works great in this update. Xclusive, did you make any other tweaks to the radio settings other than not actually replacing the img file?

Yes, thank you it helped immensely. I went ahead and used the LG Flash Tool to flash the ZV7 .bin file from the unbrick sticky, and now it seems everything is all good.

no, no mods

That's the original assert from the ota update

Ok, android noob here - I was quite proud of myself about a month ago as I managed to root this phone for the first time, partition the SD card with aparted, and move all my apps to the SD card (don't remember what I used to root it - I really should start writing everything down - but am using Linksys to move apps). I was all ready to attempt the same on my Nook Tablet and maybe my spouse's Thrive.

Then yesterday morning I rather sillily clicked yes on an update notification (won't do that again!) and found my phone reset to factory settings once it was done - SD card no longer partitioned and all my downloaded apps gone, although I guess they're easy enough to reinstall. However, the version still says ls720zv6, and it still works (not soft-bricked, if I understand the term correctly); when I reinstalled root checker it says my phone is still rooted.

Reading through this thread it sounded like there was some confusion as to whether the update changed the version number or not - so now I'm not sure if it actually did update. Should I just follow the steps here to make sure it did? Or is there something I need to undo first? Thanks in advance.

It failed to update, then it did a factory reset.

Got it, thanks, kinda what I figured - but that doesn't quite answer my question. Anything else I need to take care of before I follow these steps?

You should be good. Make sure you follow the steps correctly. Worst case, just follow the unbrick guide if anything bad happens. :)

Ok, sorry I seem to need hand holding, but I'm not seeing exactly how to install the vs7 update. I've copied the zip to the external SD, but what do I do then? Extracting it doesn't seem to do anything; is there an installer file I'm not seeing? If this is something I'm already supposed to know how to do I apologize.

If you are already rooted and on v6 then you would use the update zip.

You will have to install gherkauls CWMT recovery, links are in the OP. Install CWMT recovery if you do not already have it.

The v7 update zip has to be installed from the CWMT recovery.

This is a zip file that installs from the CWMT. It is not a standard zip that you open to install the contents.
