Help Moto G is locked with virus

Hello yesterday my brother got his phone locked with this false FBI virus that asks you to pay $500 dollars to unlock it. I turn it on and when the lock screen comes up it pops up I tried doing a factory reset through the locked bootloader this is a Moto G (Cricket) phone but to do that I have to enter stock recovery which I did but end up getting a boot up error so it doesn't enter it. Any suggestions where to find a stock recovery img for this phone would be nice because I've looked all over yesterday. If not I'll have no other choice but to sent it to Cricket for a warranty exchange.

Back to KOLIO's idea ... I assume you don;t have it authorized for remote erase under Android Device Manager. Correct?

... Thom
yes I do but won't do anything for me just takes me to the locked bootloader screen but like I said it doesn't do a factory reset.

I understand what your telling me but if I give it a try it still won't let me I think, I'll try no guarantee it will work and how will Norton work when my brothers phone is locked would have to install the Norton app but that's not possible and I don't know any anti-virus software for PC's that work for android devices.

Hmmmm you Dont use the net properly all you need is Norton or avist or avg security when the program ask just plug up USB and have it run a check when it's done it will ask if you want to repair. You should know what to do if not take it BACK TO CRICKET and pay 35.00 for a new one .

I don't have insurance but still has warranty exchange for the same phone its totally free man that's a good thing about Cricket I'll have to wait like two weeks. No problem ;)

O yes it did use to be 35.00 but they may have a fix
I know they charged you if you want your device delivered more quickly for $20 but never knew that. I know they charged you also if your an existing customer and want a new phone that's the phones price plus+ activation as you already know.

Hold down the power button until you get what's in the first picture. Then hold down power off until it says reboot into safe mode. Then after rebooting into safe mode, factory reset your phone. Its what I did and hopefully it should work for you

You know, I don't think that Norton (or any other) antivirus program installed on your computer will recognise and find viruses on your phone attached with USB cable. I guess I could be wrong, but I don't think it'll help in this situation.

So, how did you get this virus? An app from a non-Google Play store (3rd party)?

You should be able to uninstall the bad app you downloaded by booting into safe mode.

Safe mode will boot with only system apps running letting you uninstall the bad (malware) app.

I did the same thing that's how I know how to fix it.
I don't have a working stock recovery like I mentioned in my first post so I could enter safe mode but cannot do a factory reset because the recovery image doesn't boot up and by the way it was a 3rd party app. Jshadow I'll give that a try but if its a no go I'll return it to Cricket for the same phone.

What if you didn't root your stock image is still in the device . remove the junk power back to system without safe mode then do a factory data reset to clean any left over junk from the device

If you can get into safe mode go into settings >> Apps>> swipe left to all >> touch the app you want to get rid of and press uninstall.

Edited to correct swipe direction.
