Root [GUIDE]Rooting the LG Volt LS740/LG F90

Double edit: I was having issues with my camera flash before I downgraded and rooted my phone (in fact, LG customer support recommended I do a factory restore of my phone to fix the problem). I'm still having trouble with it. Flash light apps and the camera seem to be unable to effectively use the flash for anything. Sometimes it works, randomly once or twice out of 100 attempts.

Any idea on what the problem is or how to fix it?
Did you get back up to zv4? If not, go do a factory reset and install the update, then do another factory reset and wipe dalvik and cache. See if that fixes it. Otherwise, I'd start considering a hardware issue, especially if it's been since you got the phone.

Wasn't my downgrade to V3 a factory reset? I literally lost everything I had installed, including my contacts.

I was leaning towards a hardware problem to begin with, I've only had my phone for a few weeks and the flash appeared to be problematic almost immediately.

I wiped camera/torch cache before I downgraded, reset settings for both, and did a hard reset (removed battery). They seemed to fix the problem temporarily, but not for long. That's when I downgraded to v3 so I could root my phone and remove a bunch of the garbage apps LG/Virgin installs.

Oh, one last thing. When I do anything that involves the flash, it does flicker as if it's trying to turn on.

You should've exchanged it immediately. Definitely shouldn't have rooted it. I'm assuming that like everyone else your phone no longer has the carrier boot animation and it says LG everywhere you're carrier should be mentioned. People have been able to exchange their phones after rooting, but you never know. This is certainly a hardware issue. It needs to be repaired or replaced.

No... You would have to be rooted to do anything like that, which would mean you don't need to.
Uhhh it says on the thread that the only way to "root the ls740 on v4" is to downgrade to v3 and root with usual method via towelroot apk. So so seems pointless to me if you cant downgrade without rooting. But okie dokie.

I wasn't able to root it until I downgraded.

I got my Volt via the mail directly from Virgin Mobile. I can probably still exchange it and do a factory reset to restore the carrier crap. I've messaged VM twice about the issue.

That was my point. In order to downgrade without a computer the phone would have to be rooted. Since rooting is the point of downgrading, it would be pointless to downgrade.

There is NOTHING to root my phone with. I have tried Towelroot, KingoRoot, all sorts of downloaded files the 5 different forums said I needed, and after 30 days I am STILL wasting my time. So if anyone here can find a way to actually get mine rooted please let me know. Boost did an OTA from V4 to V5 last night....not that it helped with rooting any. The only reason I wanted to root was to be able to save all my apps and things to my 36GB SD Card rather than use up the internal phone memory.

I have an LG VOLT it didn't work for ZV4 yesterday and overnight they did an OTA to ZV5 and it STILL does not root the phone.

I didn't RANDOMLY pull the spec info out my ass.

You have to downgrade to zv3, root it, then use the prerooted ROMs to reupgrade.
There is no 'it didn't work on zv4'. You don't even attempt to root anything until AFTER downgrading.
You have to start at step 1. I can only assume you are skipping steps or something since you didn't give any details of what you did or didn't do.

You can ease off the attitude a touch. I'm trying to help you. I apologize for spacing that you posted the phone specs.

The phone wont take a downgrade, it wont take an upgrade, it wont take a patch. IT WILL NOT ROOT AT ALL. After 30 days I believe I have done everything but run it over with the truck.....which at this point is NOT looking too bad an idea

No one can help without details. All you are saying is that 'it won't do it'. There is no useful information there. Please give us some details so we can understand where it is going wrong. Everyone on here has used this method to root.

I don't know what else to tell you. EVERY program that says it will root it doesn't, Every time I try to root it it does not ROOT, I don't know what else to say. WHY would anyone make a phone take a 36GB card and then store everything in the frickin phone and make it impossible to store anything on the card.......If everyone else has used the method to root then good for you, mine WILL NOT ROOT AT ALL. This isn't the ONLY forum I have been on and other people seem to have the same issues as me. So I guess no one can help me because I have no damn CLUE why it wont root especially when you try to root it 8 different ways. I emailed LG about it maybe THEY will know why their phone wont store on an SD card although I'm sure it will be a KitKat Issue which is why I got the KitKat Patch which it wont take without a Root so I am essentially wasting my time going in circles for nothing.

You still aren't saying what you have done. You are just making vague statements of nothing works. Did you follow the guide, or did you just download stuff and start clicking buttons? If you were following the guide, how far did you get? What errors did you get? Tell me exactly what you have done in relation to the link I provided.

There are no one click root methods that will work once you are past zv3 (original software). This is why you have to downgrade, which it sounds like you aren't doing. This is step 1 in the guide. If it's not working, you need to tell us what is happening and what errors you are getting.

You are correct that in KitKat, no non-system apps are allowed to write to the SD card. On an unrooted KitKat phone, the SD is intended for user media, put there by the stock system.

Black screen never gives a code stays stuck on black screen and says rooted but when you finally have to restart it it isnt rooted. It wont downgrade to get to step 1. it wont root on the v4 method it sticks until you restart it. same with v5 that got push OTA sometime after midnight lastnight. never tells you WHY it wont root it just never roots

Step 1 is the downgrade. It sounds like you aren't initiating the flash. Read the instructions carefully. After the flash tool is prepped, you have to unplug the usb cable from the computer and plug it back in to start the flash. This is after you click the yellow arrow.

Nothing works :( I need to find someone close by to do it for me I guess or just toss the phone and go back to Blackberry.
I understand your severely confused. I test almost everything in this forum and I KNOW you can downgrade from zv5 I just did it 2 seconds ago. No its not push one button easy.

Start Here for the downgrade.

Remember to plug the usb into the phone and computer when the phone is off. THEN hold power and vol UP untill download mode is done loading. Step 15 is CRUCIAL if you dont do that your phone wont boot out of Mini OS 3.0

Then you must use towel root on the zv3 you just downgraded to.
Then install the new TWRPv2 recovery. I used Flashify app, its easy.

Okay, let's take a deep breath and discuss a couple things.

1. Rooting is a very careful process where you need to have the utmost patience and diligence. If you do something wrong or miss a step, you can render your phone inoperable.

2. Google, the people who created the Android OS, have decided to deny apps access to the SD in all newer versions. This means that they cannot be moved or installed to the SD card without first rooting the device. This is normal and working as intended.

3. I would listen bg4m3r when he tells you to click the link and follow the directions carefully. you have to download the stock rom, flash your phone's rom back to V3, and then go from there. You cannot just buy an LG volt and root it out of the box, that's not possible these days. After flashing the rom with V3, then you can install Towelroot and SU.

As a quick side note, I received a replacement Volt from VM this week, currently flashing it back to V3 so I can root it and get rid of all the crap apps.
