Android Question

Guest
I have recently been plagued with the offer to update my Android which would not go away. Eventually I gave in and let it update. I am seriously unhappy as it has mucked up all the settings on my MotoG phone. How can I get it back like it was. Idiot programmers do not seem to realise that old people do not like change unless highly beneficial.

I think if you are confounded by a phone update you will find it too challenging to revert to old firmware. I would contact a local cell phone repair shop for assistance.

Your description here is sufficient to explain the problem to them.

Thanks but the snag is that is going to cost me isn't it? Why can they not leave things alone or send them in a way that can be reverted from easily. They should pay to have my phone reinstated!

Welcome to Android Forums!

I understand your frustration, but it really is beneficial to have the latest update as it includes performance and security fixes.

I know this won't completely take away the pain, but I hope it at least lessens it. :)

Thanks but I still want it back the way it was. Oh and while I am about it, I recently got back from a continental tour. In Spain I was able to do whatever downloading I wanted with various WIFIs but in France I was constantly obstructed when I tried to get into Play Store to download a French Dictionary. I put the blame on Google Chrome but so far I have not heard anyone else making a similar complaint. What is the best browser that will allow one to do what one wants even if it seems to be dangerous as I don't keep particularly sensitive information on my phone?

I can only reiterate jvook's comments. You would have to root and flash a ROM to revert to how your device was previously. If you think the changes to your phone are confusing you will be scratching your head in bewilderment at this process.
The world is continually advancing, if it wasn't we would still be living in caves. I bet you don't have a black & white TV! These updates are designed to make your experience and security, better. I'm sure after a few hours of usage, you will get used to the updates but if you really, really want to revert to the old system you will get plenty of help here but note, it will invalidate your warranty and you could end up with an expensive paperweight if it goes wrong.

Harry would you start a new thread describing this separate issue? That allows other users to find the thread if they have the same issue. Before starting your new thread, please read the post at the top of the forum called "How to get help with your device". Following those guidelines will make it easier for you and us to find a solution. In your new thread, please also describe what you mean by "constantly obstructed" and "allow one to do what one wants"

OK I have done that (start the new thread). This update, as I said, it appeared to insist that I allowed it and when it was complete it had messed up many of my settings. Many of my contacts had gone missing and some appear to still be there but invisible as I accidentally rang one I was unable to find. OK I shall not consider attempting to reinstate the system but I do not agree that updates necesserally improve things. Windows is a particular example of this, Vista was rubbish, it is generally agreed and so much so that a Vista lap top I bought came with a get you back to XP disc, and 8 is bad news for someone used to 7 which was and is quite good. I have been using computers for a long time (CAD since the late 70s) and was pretty accomplished with DOS and I and a long term DTP friend of mine who is seriously computer literate ( has a masters degree) still use WIN 3.11 for some jobs for which it beats all the later incarnations so don't tell me about living in caves. I do not appreciate getting something set up nicely and having some so called improvement mess it all up! They really should make updates easily reversible.

I found my phone happily updating itself last month without even asking. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what is wrong with Android system updates. I definitely understand your frustration. Best of luck

So is it the carrier or manufacturer who decides whether an update should be forced upon you or not?
I've always been offered the option tbh

In Settings > About > Software Updates I have the option to download them automatically or not. I've always found it to be turned off (just notify about updates), but it may be that some manufacturer or network decided to turn it on by default. To my mind that's unfriendly, but that is how a lot of computer and software manufacturers work.

Harry is from Cornwall (I clicked on his name), so I don't think it's a national thing. But much as I've liked some Moto handsets I've never owned one of their Android phones, nor bought a network-branded phone since the 90s, so could be either of those.

Yes, in a way it is a rant but equally I am hoping that manufacturers and programmers will see it and get the message that we do not always appreciate what they are doing. Lets face it we are the customers and the customer is always right. If you went into a shop and were sold something whether you wanted it or not you would not be happy. So give us the ability to easily revert from an update if we find we do not like it as I do not like this one I had forced on me.
Harry
