I have a old flip phone so pardon by lack of knowledge but is rooting the phone better that using the sense ui?

Rooting just means obtaining access to the "root" account on your phone. It's kind of like Administrator account on Windows. As root you can alter, add, and delete certain system files that you couldn't do under a regular user account. Root access is needed for some methods of tethering. Others like PDANet are either free for the lite version and a small charge for the full version. These don't require root access.

You all are so tech savey. Someday (june 6th) when I get this EVO I would love to get on a thread that teaches me how to do all of this.:D

yeah but u can only use it while hooked up to ur laptop...the wireless tether app lets u broadcast a wifi signal and it will be free although sprint wants to charge u to use their tether app

I agree. I just was providing an example of some common ways to tether. Sprint is well within its rights to sell a service like that. Tons of companies do it and count on convenience and marketing to sell the service when cheaper alternatives are available. As long as they don't pull a douchey move that says you can't do it another way if you choose then I will be fine. Up until now, their Wimax services always imply unlimited use thanks to all the cheap available bandwidth provided.

Just for what it's worth, I stopped by a local Radio Shack today and spoke with a very nice rep who was willing to pull up the 4-page "You Gotta Know the Evo" on her system. She even printed me out a color copy. She didn't seem to be deeply knowledgable about the EVO per se, but she said she had noticed the big price drops they are running on the Hero and she said they usually do that just before new phones come out (I suppose to clear inventory). She offered to sell me an Evo that would be shipped directly to my house and I jumped at the chance to see if it could be ordered. She input my current cell # and zip code and through her system was able to confirm that I am eligible for an upgrade (actually all 3 of our family phones are, sweet!). Unsurprisingly, when she tried to find the product # to order, there wasn't one. The store manager has a call into his upline to see when they will be able to accept pre-orders (and I asked for a telephone call if they find out). During our conversation she also said that many times when they receive electronic presale flyers, the items are available for presale the next week, so she suggested I try back Monday. We exchanged cell numbers so maybe they will let me know if they find anything out.

I scanned in the 4 pages into .PDF files and I would put them here if there was a way to upload files, but they are already shown on one of the android sites (mine are just much clearer copies).

Well, PDANet also supports Bluetooth tethering, so technically it's wireless too.. I agree WiFi is a bit more flexible, but Bluetooth is probably much easier on phone's battery..

The interesting question to me is whether any of these tethering apps will support WiMax on EVO.. or will they be limited to 3G/EVDO. I am sure in a matter of time these apps will be updated to support WiMax.

As soon as someone figures out how to bridge the Wimax and Wifi radios we should be good to go. I give it a month max :)

not 100% but i think the developer would have to write it to work for wimax...i dont think it would take a long time to get it done since the evo is such a hot phone.

No new info, but just a report...

I went to my local store (MO) and asked about the EVO. Guy said they've been told June (no date). We did discuss a May release and he agreed it made sense...but he only knows what he's been told...

I asked about pre-ordering, he said they would do so and I put my name/number on his list. :) Since I was "his" first pre-order, I'd get called first (by him) as soon as he finds out anything.

Some of the best info will come from sales guys wanting a commission. The Shack particularly makes it hard to make money outside of cell sales.

Only problem is they probably won't know until the official announcement in a week or so.

i replied to you in the other thread but u deleted it, but i think it would be good if you get 2 spares and a battery charger so you can have one spare on you while the other is at home charging.

Not sure I want to carry around a spare battery though. I always have my keys and since this is a keychain, that's the main reason I was asking about this particular charger.

Anyone have experience with these? Are there any cheaper ones not on the Sprint store? Seems like a great idea really. Keep a solar charger on your keychain or in your backpack/briefcase/purse/whatever so you can at least trickle charge in an emergency or top off during the day. I'd pay maybe $30 for such a thing if it worked well.

Save as jpeg and post.
Pdf is soo messy.

Good idea...thanks RoI !

Hey guys, I've been lurking here for a long time, but this is my first time posting. I'm a current Sprint customer with an Instinct, and like everyone here, I can't wait to upgrade to the EVO.

The one thing that concerned me on the screenprints in the link below is the following quote:

Text from link below said:
From the language of the materials, it seems that the EVO 4G will require special rate plans.

I hope this doesn't mean that Sprint will come up with a new plan that we need to adopt in order to activate this phone. I'd hate to see them come up with a plan that costs more and force us to use it to activate this phone.

Are you guys reading it that way? Does anyone have any insight?

Thanks!

Rob

It's training material for the EVO --

My question, is the Evo going to require a special plan? If you look at screenshot 4, it says a plan designed for the Evo, while screenshot 5 is the one talking about the hotspot. Is there some other difference in plan other than the hotspot for the Evo?

Not to steal your thunder, but those pics were floating around previously :D

Appreciate the effort though - thanks!

I also like the "Get to know the Evo" tag line.

Edit: I just saw where you said they were on a different site already - sorry!
