My bill went up with the new plan I had to buy for my Pre and is going to go up again for the Evo. Yes it is still cheaper than the competition and I will probably swallow my pride and get it anyway.

I am just disappointed that they are charging for something that makes data delivery cheaper for them and that the CEO flat-out said would not cost any more than 3G data plans do now. It's a bad business move and yet another $10 added to my monthly expenses.

I have to own up to this one (Shocked) I agree with you fully. I honestly did not think there would be a price hike. Dan must have step up to the podium and said"Screw it! $10 and $20 extra for everyone". I don't see a problem for writing code to do a work around/bypass at all. I'll have it done in a week and everyone will receive 4G signal in a 4G area. I wanted Sprint to do the right thing IMHO.

If 4g was flipped on in NYC it must of been in a limited area. I am about 6 miles away from midtown and my Overdrive is still saying 3G only.

I think this is why they mentioned special rate/plan codes. They will likely only allow you to activate an Evo on one of these plans. Rather than metering or tracking, they just won't give you the option to activate an Evo unless you buy a +$10 plan.

It's cool. You gave us info based on what you knew and it is appreciated.

I think they're confused too. As reported by others, Engadget says:


"Unfortunately, there's a downside to all this: customers will be paying a mandatory (as confirmed to us by Sprint reps) $10 per month "Premium Data add-on" on top of their plan"

Sigh. I just want an official statement on the $10 pricing. Per Sprint's site, I'm assuming the $10 is mandatory, regardless of what blogs say--of course, I'm assuming Sprint's website holds more weight than these bloggers. :)

"There is no 4G cap. There is a 5GB cap for 3G"

From John Taylor information (blog) he wrote 5MB, I am pretty sure he meant GB, so I just made the correction.
 
Now lets wait and see how many facebook groups pop up that say "Sign the petition to not charge 4G!" -- "The official Sprint petition for free 4g!"

I'm actually very excited by the final product and will just gulp down the $10.00 extra (don't tell the wife). It doesn't hurt, that I live in a beer guzzling, tobacco chewing, NASCAR watching, southern hick area that is just covered up in 4G!

While I have little problem with the $10 surcharge, IT'S NOT OPTIONAL!!!! I really wish people would stop saying that.

Here is John Taylor's blog. He is "a spokesman for Sprint Nextel on public policy issues."

There have been a TON of questions about this monthly Premium Data charge. I hope this will clear things up.

If you buy the Sprint 4G EVO, you have to pay this $10 charge each month. This is specific to the device. It's not related to whether you are using 3G or 4G. It is required if you have the phone.

Because the phone has a faster processor, a huge 4.3 inch screen and an 8 megapixel camcorder/camera, we expect you will be using a lot more data than you would with our other devices. These features will give you capabilities that have previously never been available on a wireless device and we think they provide a premium experience. (Remember, this is the world's first 3G/4G Android phone.)

Separately, some have asked about the $29 a month hotspot charge. (You can connect up to 8 WiFi-enabled devices to one EVO if you pay that monthly charge -- but this is optional.)

I hope this clears things up. While some don't like it, even with these charges, we're still cheaper than AT&T and Verizon, who's 4G networks exist on some beautifully designed PowerPoint slides. ;-)
