Help Holy Smokes! High Data Usage by Android OS! [SOLVED]

That background usage still concerns me. And yours is outrageous...

I hope you can figure out what's really causing it. Mine seems to be stable after uninstalling Google related updates and carrier's pre-in apps... Also I changed settings, many of them, and I don't remember which is what now... Too much troubles this has been...
 
I may have found a culprit for mass amount of background data being used by Android OS. My nexus 6p used around 500mb in one day and i had no idea why. I downloaded a data manager app and found out what it was, but i don't know how to fix it!

Every time I reboot my phone, com.quicinc.cne.CNESERVICE (qualcomms connectivity engine) usesabout 100mb of background data. So one day when I was out and messing with my phone, rebooting in between 5 times, it used tons of data.

I does it at home on wifi too, not just on mobile data. Here's a screenshot after rebooting twice. If I dont reboot, it doesnt use any data.

I had a similar problem: at every boot of my phone it downloaded several hundreds of MBs, on Wifi as well as on 3G. "Data usage" in Settings reported "Android OS" as the biggest (99+%) downloader.
I was able to diagnose my problem using the app "Network Log" (thanks, developer! Amazing that this app is for free!). The app reported two App IDs as big downloaders, namely 1000 (Android System) and 10022(Google Services, e.g. G. Contacts Sync, G. Play Services, G. Account Mgr and G. Backup Transport).
By the way, Network Log requires root!
A Firewall (I chose Firewall Gold) that I installed now blocks these App IDs when on data.

In the next few days I hope to see that blocking these App IDs has no disadvantages.
I reboot my phone every morning (while on Wifi), so I expect to see no problems... :)
 
SOLUTION FOUND..... turn ON , yes ON .. ALL BACKGROUND DATA. Also remove sim card and re insert. Whats happening is that if you have background data off it is being forced over and reported under Android OS which also, for some reason, is causing the app you are using to use MORE data so it is like being dinged double data. I Turned on ALL BACKGROUND DATA and it fixed all the Android OS Data issues.

I tried this, but it didn't solve my problem. I'll stick with the firewall-solution.
 
in the last three days my huawei p9 has happily used 227mb on OS services according to "My Data Manager" . This matches what my provider thinks I have used... however if I look at the built in data manager it hardly shows any OS traffic at all

Just picked up a new Samsung A5 and it did a software update. Even though I was on Wi-Fi it used my data. That cost me almost a gig for the one day. I would assume a system update is exempt from your allotment. I have 5 gig remaining for the next 27 days so I should be safe but that first day was a shocker!

OMG I also started experiencing this around the same time you did! And I finally found out today what's causing it! It's the LOCATION!! With my Location turned on, my phone used to consume at least 5Mb per minute. Now it's back to consuming less than 1MB per day.

Here's what I did:
Location -> Location Method -> GPS only

Hope it works for you too!

Thanks! I just tested this, however, I switched to GPS only and I have noticed Android OS is still using data while Maps is on.

Did you reboot after switching the setting?
 
I've gone from 16mb of mobile data usage a month to 1.4gb!! It pushed me over my 3.5gig limit last month. I went through everything and found the culprit! Samsung Cloud.

I went into Settings > Applications > Application Manager > More - Show System Apps then clicked on soooo many apps until I found this one which had used 1.3gig in a month! 1.08gig the month before and only 400mb the month before that.

Went into Settings > Samsung Cloud then More > Network Settings and set it to wifi only.

Don't know why it suddenly started consuming mass amounts of data, especially when the only thing selected was contacts?? Anyway, I hope this fixes the issue and my info can help someone else!
 
I had the same problem and didn't notice at the beginning because my data limit was quite high.

The data eater was declaredly Google Play Services, with 4.5GB of background data consumed on a total of 6GB. My monthly data usage was normally under 3GB, total.

The only solution that worked for me, after many tries, was to restore the phone to factory settings.
Now it is back to ordinary usage.

Just use application from google play Android firewall to stop particularly service or app to use data on cellular network. It's easy.

Which one do you use? I just searched for 'Android firewall' in Google Play Store, and there are a bunch of them...

I don't want to download wrong one that might cause more problems...
 
Yeah but YouTube had 8.6GB I then ran a 1440 video on Youtube and the only increase was Youtube. From what I can see the data is accounted for by most if not all of the apps I just can't figure out what what Android OS is doing.
 
I am having the exact same issue.
I have no idea what sub-package in all of "Android OS" is using this data.
Is there any app that can break this package into subpackages and show me better whats using the data???
Check out what happened today! My data for the whole month, GONE!
This was like 2gb in one hour!

I have a Nexus 5X running Android 7.0. Since the update to 7.0, the Android OS has been using significantly more cellular data while connected to WiFi. Prior to the update, the Android OS used ~5Mb/month. Currently, the Android OS is using ~40Mb/day of cellular data while continuously connected to WiFi. I have tried the follows steps to troubleshoot and reduce data without success.

- Turn on Data Saver
- Turn off Cellular data always active
- Restart in Safe mode and monitor usage
- Factory reset and monitor without 3rd party apps
- Replace phone
- Keep WiFi on during sleep

Also, this is not a one time spike in data usage (such as downloading the OS update or updating other apps) as I have monitored data usage activity for ~1 month now. During that time the Android OS alone used over 1 Gb of data while connected to WiFi >95% of the time. I have contacted the carrier (Project Fi) who has informed me the OS is working as intended even with this data usage. The only solution I was given was to turn on/off cellular data as needed, which I do not feel is a reasonable solution for this issue.

None of the other solutions in this thread have fixed the issue. Any additional thoughts?
