2.1 OTA Beginning 5/11/2010

Thanks. Im scared my battery will drain faster if it's left on. If it were off, wouldn't the update still come to my phone and just sit there til I turned 3g on.

I don't know if it will. I just plugged mine in at night before beddy bye, and when I woke up, it was there to install! :D

So, by reading this forum, I realize that I am one of the few people who didn't know about the update. So I installed it last night and woke up this morning and my contacts were gone, all my screens blank, as if I just bought my phone. So anyone know if I'm screwed because I didn't back anything up? I also synched it with my gmail contacts but I didn't have all the numbers in my gmail account. Can anyone help me? :(

Im kind of like you. I dont use Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth. If I want to check google maps, or now use google nav, I just flip GPS on at that time.
But I do always leave mobile network on. That allowes my weather widget to sync and update on my homescreen every now and then.
With that, I always got at least 2 days out of a full charge, and I would plug it in when it was still anywhere between 20-40 depending on my usage. So really I could still pull off 3 days from a single charge if I wanted. Again that is with mobile network constantly on.
You could rest assured that you can turn at least that one on, and forget about it. It will be fine.

GPS only uses the battery if you have an application enabled that uses it, like Maps or Weatherbug or GPS Status. Otherwise it sits essentially idle.

Maybe Ill flip it on and see how it goes then. I figured it was always going to be pinging to find my location.

LOL Check out VZW Support On Twitter

@VZWSupport Is the ERIS suppose to have live wall papers with the new 2.1 update? Mine does not so that is why I am asking. 15 minutes ago via web

@mattjphoto Yes, it does suppose to have the live wall papers. 9 minutes ago via web in reply to mattjphoto

I don't think VZWSupport has a clue about much huh

I suspect it depends which of their Twitter reps you actually get responding. I'm pretty sure at least one of them (*NK) is a regular on this forum and is therefore quite knowledgeable because he/she joins us in our troubleshooting. I don't know about the others, though.

Nope. If I'm not mistaken, the original OTA minor update fixed that issue. Now, it only pings when it needs to. I leave it on all the time and it activates itself when it needs to. The rest of the time, it's idle.

Is anyone still waiting on the OTA? My fiance still hasn't received hers.

I am. Seeing that there are issues with the manual install, I'm hoping (perhaps in vain) that at least some of it is resolved OTA so I don't catch the bug. Plus, I don't like the idea of wiping everything off and starting completely over.

I sure do understand your waiting. Even if it doesnt work out like that. But just so you know, it doesnt wipe everything.
You keep pictures and texts.
Apps are still there although I synced with AppBrain just to be sure.
Sync with google, and my contacts and calendar came back in an instant.

Leaking wiped the phones, but flashing the OTA did not.
All you lose really is they way you have each of your homescreens laid out. You need to put all the icons back where you had them.

Hmmm... interesting.
On the other message board I frequent fap is the unfiltered term for... pleasuring oneself.
I must say, I really didnt enjoy the wait as much as you seem to.

LOL....not sure I thought "FAP" had to do with the sound that RObocop makes when his head is flying all over.....NEVER heard of FAP having to do with pleasuring oneself.....but then again I'm old and out of touch.

sorry I didn't read through the entire thread, but do I need to back everything up (apps, settings, & contacts) before installing the OTA 2.1 update whenever I get it??

Apps stay, but I used AppBrain free from the market to sync them online anyway.
Contacts, you should sync with google now, and then after updating, just sync again and they will return.
Settings stay the same, although there are some new options with the update so you will want to check everything and possibly tweak a few things anyway.

I'm a noobasaurus....but if your contacts are google contacts they are already backed up....OTA will keep your apps.....settings I'm not sure.

The only real thing to watch out for is if you have contacts that are just "phone contacts", and are not in the gmal list. Then they will not be sync'd.
