Finally, someone who understands that this is one of the many low end android phones! I got a long nasty message on Youtube because I commented on a video saying about how the Hero is now a low end android phone, and got about a page and a half message explaining to me, in botched english, about how the Hero is a quality phone and is in no way shape or form a low end device. Sorry to say, but even as much as I love this phone, it's still a low end device in the Android spectrum.
Well, I'm not sure I'd call the Hero "low end", quite yet. In the full spectrum of smartphones that are in use today, and certainly in the spectrum of cell phones, it sits well up in the 90th percentile.
It sure isn't the top of the line anymore, but neither will the EVO or Incredible be 9 months after their release.
Lots of the stuff people complain about not having didn't exist last October when the Hero was released. Live wallpapers certainly didn't. Shoot, when I got my Hero, there were barely any apps in the market, let alone worthwhile ones.
Android is brand new, and the potential is unlimited. Software and hardware advances are going to fly by, making any piece of hardware seem archaic compared to what's available now (whenever now is).
The Hero did all it was promised to do (well, save for a few bugs) when I bought it. It did even more than that as new apps were developed. It did even more when root became possible and as ROMs were cooked. Now, it runs 2.1. It does virtually everything an iPhone does for a fraction the total cost of ownership (do live wallpapers even exist for the iPhone? Oh, wait, the iPhone can't even have static wallpapers

). Maybe it's not the fastest, or the shiniest, and it may never get another OS upgrade (except from the devs at xda) but it's far from a useless relic in my eyes.
As for the Droid from Motorola, it may have a souped up architecture, but it has its own set of problems, and the wish list for what Droid owners want and need is every bit as long as ours. And, in 3 weeks when the EVO and Incredible launch, my guess is you'll start hearing Droid owners groan about how underpowered and feature lacking their phones are. It's the way of the world, nothing stays new very long anymore.
