I haven't rooted my main phone for several years either, currently an LG G6. Of course the Chinese thing I keep as a practice phone has more roots that a California Sequoia .

Chinese phone rooted; Motorola G4 bought, rooted it, sold it; LG G5 Verizon cannot root. Was given an old Samsung S3 from Sprint recently and the first thing I did was root it lol.

Yes it definitely has. I think there's just less need than there used to be. Less people rooting devices, less people needing help with smartphones in general...
